Plans unveiled for The Roof Garden at Flemington
07 Jul 2017 | Victoria Racing Club

As the Victoria Racing Club’s (VRC) Club Stand continues to take shape, new architectural plans have been unveiled for the world-class entertainment and sporting venue.

The release of the highly-anticipated designs from celebrated architects Bates Smart for the Members’ Lawn, Members’ Bar, Seating Decks and The Roof Garden provide a sensational preview of how the $128 million Club Stand is coming to life.

A spectacular new addition to Flemington, The Roof Garden will provide racegoers with exceptional 360-degree views of the course and Melbourne’s city skyline.

Housing two permanent bars and a variety of food outlets complemented by a stylish garden setting, The Roof Garden will embody the essence and spirit of a marquee at Melbourne Cup Carnival, giving patrons an incredible raceday experience unrivalled by any venue in Australia or around the world.

VRC Chairman Amanda Elliott said the VRC was thrilled to share these exciting plans.

“As the building progresses, we are revealing different levels and venues of this wonderful new structure. We are definitely raising the bar for racegoers at Flemington,” said Mrs Elliott. “The innovative and exciting plans unveiled today support our vision and ongoing ambition for the Club Stand to provide an unrivalled raceday experience, as well as ensuring Flemington and Melbourne remain the global home of racing, events and entertainment.

“We are delighted with the Bates Smart design for The Roof Garden. It draws inspiration from Flemington’s famous garden setting and the shapes and forms of the world-renowned roses echo throughout the Club Stand,” said Mrs Elliott.

The sculptural petal-designed roof canopy will create ample shade and weather protection; ensuring racegoers always enjoy a comfortable day out. The northern terrace will also have extraordinary views into the Members’ Betting Ring, giving racegoers the opportunity to be a part of the action from all angles.

The interior of The Roof Garden will house bars, betting facilities and a DJ booth to provide a high-energy party atmosphere for the young and young-at-heart. The venue will also be ideal for private functions and provides a fantastic wet weather alternative so that Flemington can be enjoyed all year round.

The new Members’ Bar will be at the heart of the Club Stand; a prime location for racing enthusiasts and traditionalists to watch and enjoy quality racing with a bird’s-eye view like no other. Paying homage to the history of the VRC, the Members’ Bar features wood panelling and treasured items from the Members’ Old Grandstand woven throughout.

Patrons will have direct access from the Members’ Bar to the energetic atmosphere on the Member’s Lawn, where they can walk up and order food and drinks to take to their favourite trackside vantage points. Dressed with umbrellas and garden furniture, the stylish Members’ Lawn will be the perfect location for socialising and celebrating a day at the races with seamless access to the Members’ Betting Ring and Lobby.

Significant upgrades to the Seating Decks will provide unprecedented opportunities to watch and enjoy the races outside with access to elevated viewing podiums and outdoor seating across three levels with additional angles available from The Roof Garden.

Currently under construction, the five-level Club Stand has created an estimated 350 full-time equivalent jobs and will be delivered by in time for racegoers to enjoy at the 2018 Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Club Stand is set to secure the ongoing future prosperity of Flemington and ensure the VRC’s considerable contribution to the Victorian and Australian economies continues to grow. Last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival generated more than $427.1 million in gross economic benefits to Victoria alone, which is unrivalled by any other sporting event in the country.

Renewal plans at Flemington, with the Victorian Government, Racing Victoria and Tabcorp supporting the project, will ensure the racecourse retains its position as a world-class sporting, entertainment and tourism venue for Australia.
