Sunday meeting preview
13 Aug 2017 | By Larry Foley - kranjiracing.com

Sunday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.

It’s safe to say the “Poon Train” has arrived at Kranji.

Hong Kong-based apprentice Matthew Poon started his two-week stint in Singapore last weekend and from 11 rides over two days, he won three and was placed another four times.

Add his first Group winner on the Shane Baertschiger-trained FAALTLESS in the Garden City Trophy and Poon’s 2kg claim looks a godsend for trainers and punters alike.

It’s not surprising he has nine rides on Sunday and while there are no standouts on what looks a tough day for finding winners, all his mounts have each-way hopes and he is the jockey to follow.

Poon starts the day on ALWAYS A WINNER and while the 8YO hasn’t won since January 2015, the race is weak enough to be genuine chance.

KATE’S KEEPER (race 3), BRING ME JOY (4) and MURDOCH (5) all could be good value options for punters while ON ELECTRIC AVENUE could be very hard to beat in race 6.

The market will be best guide on the newcomer SEBASTION BACH in race 7 and DREAMER LEGEND (8), KATAGAS (9) and LIM’S RACER in the last, could provide Poon with another winner or two to add to his tally.

Toot toot!

Best Bets: (KEEPITUP race 8, win), (MURDOCH race 5, value) and (DINGHU MOUTAIN race 9, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 7 (1, 2, 6 and 7), race 8 (1, 3, 5, 7 and 8), race 9 (1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10) and race 10 (1, 5 and 6).

Please note the odds listed are "reference odds" only.
Race 1
Selections; 7 ALWAYS A WINNER - 9 PETITE VICTOIRE - 2 BORN A FIGHTER - 4 SACRED CROWN
An ordinary class 5 and the market will be a very good guide. Gun apprentice Matthew Poon gets on ALWAYS A WINNER who has been improved by recent racing; the class, surface and distance suit and he will be hard to run down from the good gate. The veteran SACRED CROWN resumed fairly, he has a good record at the distance in this company; the claim helps and he could be closing late. BORN A FIGHTER is resuming after a sound trial when ridden by Manoel Nunes; he stays aboard and his only win was in this class. PETITE VICTOIRE showed a return to form last start. He has speed and should be prominent and can hang on in this field. Of the others FLYING SHADOW disappointed last outing at his first Class 5 outing for a while but this a weaker field and he could show up while the maiden NINEPINS battles away and could show up for Oscar Chavez from the good gate.
1 FLYING SHADOW ** Disappointed when having first Class 5 outing in a while last start. Has succeeded in this grade previously and could improve in this weak field. 8.00
2 BORN A FIGHTER *** Resuming. Only win was in this class. Recent trial was sound when ridden by Manoel Nunes and he stays aboard. Watch market. 6.00
3 SUCCESS COME TRUE * Battled when resuming. Yet to place in 10 outings. 20
4 SACRED CROWN *** 8YO who resumed fairly. Has a good record this class and distance. Claim helps and could be closing late. 6.00
5 KAISER BRIGHT * Will go forward. Has only won once in 35 poly starts and not helped by the gate. Could be tested late. 14
6 NINEPINS ** Only battled in a weak field last start but this is not much stronger and could show up from the good gate with Oscar Chavez to ride. 12
7 ALWAYS A WINNER *** Improved by recent racing and will be hard to run down with Matthew Poon to ride. 3.00
8 METAPHOR * Better on turf and yet to win in 32 starts but is often thereabouts. 25
9 PETITE VICTOIRE *** Showed a return to form last start. Has speed and should be prominent. 5.00
10 GREAT WARRIOR * Has struggled at recent outings and only win was over 1600m. 33
11 GOOD BET * Ran a fair race over this trip four starts back but has battled since. 33
Race 2
Selections; 1 MOKASTAR - 8 FILIBUSTER - 6 SHAMROCK - 7 ANTHEIA
Some interesting newcomers but the one with form is MOKASTAR. The now 3YO got too far back in the Golden Horseshoe but has trialled well since and will find this much easier with winkers back on. His stablemate ANTHEIA has been supported at both outings but only battled; her recent trial was strong, the claim helps and he could improve. The newcomers SHAMROCK and FILIBUSTER are both well bred and have trialled nicely. From strong stables with good gates and senior riders they should debut well; watch for support. Of the others EVIL SPEEDO and OCEAN HUNTER are capable of improvement on their debut efforts.
1 MOKASTAR *** Got too far back in Golden Horseshoe but has trialled well since and with winkers back on will find this much easier. Can win. 2.50
2 SPECIAL LUCK * Has struggled to date. Needs to improve. 33
3 EVIL SPEEDO * Settled well back and only battled at debut. Could improve. 14
4 MIRACLE KID * Only battled at debut. Needs to improve. 33
5 OCEAN HUNTER * Was wide throughout at debut and never figured. Better drawn here and should improve. 12
6 SHAMROCK *** By Helmet. Dam won twice up to a mile and placed at Listed level. Has trialled nicely. Well drawn with top rider. Could debut well. Watch market. 5.00
7 ANTHEIA *** Has been supported at both outings but only battled. Recent trial was strong and claim helps. Could improve. 3.50
8 FILIBUSTER *** By Ilovethiscity. Brother to 4-time winner Moonlover and half-brother to 4-time winner Singsurat. Trialled nicely and has Michael Rodd from a good gate. Goes close. 5.00
Race 3
Selections; 6 SUPER TYCOON - 3 WONDERFUL ERA - 2 KATE'S KEEPER - 4 MUSCLE BEACH
A Class 4 mile on the poly with plenty of chances including a couple of class-droppers. SUPER TYCOON has been racing well in this grade and will appreciate a good gate; he fought on well last start and with Nooresh Juglall to ride, should be in the finish. KATE'S KEEPER's best form is on turf but he has placed at two of three poly outings; he gets Matthew Poon, drops in grade and should get a good run throughout. WONDERFUL ERA is dropping back in distance and class. The 6YO bolted in at his last poly outing in this grade three starts back over 1700m and should be handy throughout. Of the rest, MUSCLE BEACH has returned not striding out freely at his past two outings yet put in solid efforts while LUCKY JUSTICE has been improved by recent racing and is suited in this company and could be running on.
1 CHASE * Hasn't won for a long time but will enjoy the drop in grade. Best form is on turf and yet to place in four poly outings. 12
2 KATE'S KEEPER *** Best form is on turf but has placed at two of three poly outings. Gets Matthew Poon and drops in grade. Should get a good run throughout. 4.00
3 WONDERFUL ERA *** Dropping back in distance and class. Bolted in at last poly outing in this grade three starts back over 1700m. Carries 5kg more than that occasion but Alan Munro gets back on and should be handy throughout. 5.00
4 MUSCLE BEACH ** Ran on solidly last start (and jockey reported issues). Suited here and can improve with Manoel Nunes to ride. 5.00
5 LUCKY JUSTICE ** Yet to win in Singapore but improved by recent racing and should be running on. 6.00
6 SUPER TYCOON *** Fought on well in similar company last start despite wide gate. Better drawn here and this distance suits. Can be in the finish. 4.00
7 KNIGHT CHEN BAY ** Only battled last start but not far away at previous outings. Stepping up in trip and previous wins have been on turf. 16
8 HOLY GRAIL * Has battled since Maiden win. Surface and distance suit but might need easier. 25
9 OPTIMUM STAR * Broke through in Class 5 last start. Up in class and distance. Might find this too hard. 33
10 PRINCE FERDINAND * Distanced last start and might need Class 5. 50
Race 4
Selections; 7 ABLE PINS - 2 DISCRETELY RED - 5 MAJULAH - 1 BRING ME JOY
Some interesting newcomers and others that have shown some promise make up the chances in this Open Maiden. DISCRETELY RED was poorly drawn and ran on from a long way back at his Singapore debut; Zawari stays on and with the claim he should be hard to hold out from the better draw over the slightly longer trip. MAJULAH is improving with racing and his recent trial was sound; he will appreciate the good gate and should be handy throughout. THE GOLDEN GOAT returned not striding out freely but still placed when resuming, his previous form was consistent and should be in the finish. BRING ME JOY appreciated blinkers last start and put in an improved performance; he is awkwardly drawn and has been unplaced at both poly outings but could show up for Matthew Poon. The most interesting newcomer is the well-bred ABLE PINS who won a trial in NZ by five lengths before arrival and has trialled solidly in Singapore; he is awkwardly drawn but looks to have ability - watch for support. SPEEDY DEMON is also nicely bred and trialled soundly; he might need longer but could show up fresh. Of the others SHOQEET and GOLDEN TOTH are likely improvers.
1 BRING ME JOY *** Drawn wide but appreciated blinkers last start and put in an improved performance so worth following. 10
2 DISCRETELY RED *** Was poorly drawn and ran on from a long way back at Singapore debut. Should be hard to hold out from the better draw over slightly longer trip. 3.00
3 THE GOLDEN GOAT *** Jockey reported not striding out freely but still placed when resuming. Previous form consistent and should be in the finish. 6.00
4 VOLKS TREASURE ** Excuses before running on fairly when resuming. Should be improved but might want longer. 16
5 MAJULAH *** Did it tough wide start and that effort and good recent trial has him in the mix. 6.00
6 STAY WITH ME * Resuming. Returned a roarer at last start when supported. Has Manoel Nunes and a good gate. Watch market. 33
7 ABLE PINS *** By Pins. Won only trial in NZ by five lengths and has trialled nicely in Singapore. Poorly drawn but looks to have ability. Watch market. 10
8 LEONARDO * Battled at debut but should be improved for the run. 25
9 SHOQEET ** Green and hung in at debut but still battled on well. Gets blinkers added and should be improved off the back of a good trial. 12
10 SPEEDY DEMON ** By So You Think. Trialled soundly. Dam is an unraced half-sister to Golden Slipper winner Overreach. Watch market. 10
11 YELLOW JADE HORSE * Needs to improve on debut. 33
12 THOTH WARRIOR ** Gets blinkers and tongue-tie. Recent trial was sound and could improve on efforts to date. 12
Race 5
Selections; 1 MURDOCH - 9 TOOBIGTOFAIL - 2 SUGARTIME JAZZ - 4 ALFONSO
The usual cast of battlers feature in this Class 5 over 1700m on the poly. MURDOCH is yet to place in four poly outings but was not far away two starts back in a much stronger race over 1800m; he gets Matthew Poon and could be hard to hold off. The stablemate TOOBIGTOFAIL has been racing soundly and has won over this trip; he can be in the finish off the back of a good trial. SUGARTIME JAZZ just missed here over 1600m last start when ridden aggressively out front and he should be in the finish. Of the rest, ALFONSO is yet to win on the poly but should be suited by this distance and can be handy throughout while PERKINS will enjoy getting back on the poly and could show up. The rest just battle but if the emergency SUN DANCE gets a run, he could go forward and be hard to pass.
1 MURDOCH *** Yet to place in four poly outings but not far away two starts back in a much stronger race over 1800m. Gets Matthew Poon and could be hard to hold off. 4.50
2 SUGARTIME JAZZ *** Just missed here over 1600m last start when ridden aggressively and should be in the finish. 5.00
3 SUN FORCE ** Failed at only poly outing but suited this distance and showed last start that Class 5 is his caper. 12
4 ALFONSO ** Not seen often on the Poly but just missed last start and can be handy throughout. 7.00
5 HERO IN THE WIND ** Improving with racing and blinkers in Class 5 may help. Keep safe. 20
6 GALAXY EXPRESS * Suited this class but recent efforts poor. Could improve for Alan Munro. 25
7 POWERFUL AS WIND ** Looked to have every chance last start but may appreciate switch to Poly and forward run expected. 25
8 PERKINS ** Will enjoy getting back on poly after winning one of these two starts back. Up 3.5kg on that effort but has same rider and could show up. 7.00
9 TOOBIGTOFAIL *** Racing soundly and has won over this trip. Can be in the finish with nice recent trial a factor. 4.50
10 KEY ON KODIAC * Yet to win in 19 starts and has been unplaced at four poly outings. 33
11 PEREGRINE FALCON * Blinkers back on after moderate effort when resuming. Best form is on turf and needs to improve. 20
12 BLACK DIAMOND * Improved by recent racing and could show up from the good gate. 14
13 SUN DANCE ** Consistent at recent outings. Should be prominent from the good gate. 8.00
14 GOLD CUSTOMER * Yet to win 19 starts but suited this trip and should get a good run throughout. 16
Race 6
Selections; 1 ON ELECTRIC AVENUE - 3 BEIJING STAR - 6 FIRST LIGHT - 10 ENHANCEMENT
Most of these have been finding it hard to win, none more so than ON ELECTRIC AVENUE. The 5YO has placed at all four poly outings and showed enough last start to think he is ready win with an M Poon 2kg claim a bonus. BEIJING STAR ran on solidly over 1000m last start; he is better suited this trip and with Michael Rodd up, should be hard to hold off. FIRST LIGHT debuted well when caught wide throughout; he gets blinkers, should be improved and will be running on late. TYPHON hung in during the middle stages but battled on solidly last start; he gets Amirul and from the good gate should be handy throughout. ENHANCEMENT showed good speed before being run down last start; he is improving and should be prominent. Of the others, watch the market on YULONG HOLY FLYING whose most recent trial was strong; he placed three times up to 1207m in Europe before arrival, once on the all-weather.
1 ON ELECTRIC AVENUE *** Got too far back last start before running on with support. Can break through from gate 1 with top apprentice. 4.00
2 TYPHON *** Hung in in the middle stages but battled on solidly last start. Gets Amirul and from the good gate should be handy throughout. 6.00
3 BEIJING STAR *** Grew wings late over 1000m last start in Class 4. Better suited this trip, Company and hard to hold off with M Rodd up. 5.00
4 DASH * Has some speed but gets found out late. 20
5 RIVER FORTUNE * Battled away last start but needs to improve on efforts to date. 16
6 FIRST LIGHT *** Debuted well when caught wide throughout. Gets blinkers and should be improved. Will be running on late. 5.00
7 JADE DRAGON * Has been freshened after two moderate efforts. Did not show up at trial. Watch market. 20
8 SPEEDY NANCHO * Distanced at debut. Needs to improve. 33
9 YULONG HOLY FLYING ** Placed three times up to 1207m in Europe before arrival, once on the all-weather. Most recent trial was good. Watch market. 10
10 ENHANCEMENT *** Showed good speed before being run down last start. Improving and should be prominent. 7.00
11 PARADOR ** Recent trial was sound and blinkers come off so look for improvement. 20
Race 7
Selections; 1 CAIRO - 2 KRATOS - 7 SPECIAL KING - 6 HALO BRIGHT
A watch the market race with some smart ones resuming, a promising one up in grade and an interesting debutant. SPECIAL KING was dominant last start in Initiation Company; this is harder but he shows promise and should be prominent. KRATOS is resuming, he showed promise last preparation and has plenty of speed; he could show up fresh for Michael Rodd. HALO BRIGHT is also resuming, his trial was solid and the distance suits; he should get a good run throughout with Manoel Nunes to ride from the inside gate. One to watch is CAIRO who showed early promise and is resuming after long break and a change of stables; his recent trial was nice enough and the stable can get them ready first-up. The newcomer is SEBASTIAN BACH whose only win in seven starts in Ireland was on the all-weather at Dundalk over 1207m; his trials have been moderate but he gets Matthew Poon, watch for support.
1 CAIRO *** Resuming after long break and change of stables. Recent trial was very good and showed early promise. Stable can get them ready first-up. Watch market. 6.00
2 KRATOS *** Resuming. Showed promise last preparation and has plenty of speed. Could show up fresh. Watch market. 4.00
3 SEBASTIAN BACH ** Only win in seven starts in Ireland was on all weather at Dundalk over 1207m. Trials have been moderate but gets Matthew Poon. Watch market. 12
4 MY HORSE * Only battled last start but is rarely far away. Gate no help. 16
5 TOU SHOU BRIGHT * Has disappointed at recent outings and hasn't won for over two years. May be looking for easier. 20
6 HALO BRIGHT *** Resuming and recent trial was solid. Suited this distance and should get a good run throughout with Manoel Nunes to ride from the good gate. 4.00
7 SPECIAL KING *** Dominant last start when winning maiden. This is harder but shows promise and should be prominent. 3.00
8 LUCKY MISSION * Has changed stables. Trial was moderate and best form is on turf over 1200m. Hasn't won for a long time but could be running on. 25
9 HERACLES * Raced very wide last start but might need easier. 33
10 SILKINO * Maiden. Looking for Class 5. 50
Race 8
Selections; 1 KEEPITUP - 3 SUPER JOE - 5 SMART VINTAGE - 8 BIG BANKER
A Class 4 Poly mile with plenty of depth and while we will have a long look at those down in the weights, KEEPITUP with a rating of 61 is the horse to watch. The 5YO has only won once in Singapore from some eight starts but obviously the stable has a fair option of him given he had a crack at the Patron's Bowl at set weights two starts ago. He showed last start with excuses that Class 4 is more to his liking and given he handles the Poly, he could be very hard to beat. But as mentioned the race has depth and expect SUPER JOE to show more early than he did last start while SMART VINTAGE had excuses last time out and gives this a shake with M Rodd up. Down in the weights, HUMDINGER and BIG BANKER are both in the winning mix and go even wider in exotics.
1 KEEPITUP *** Placed in this Company last start and better again on the Poly so can win. 4.00
2 KINGS RYKER ** Disappointing last start with support in similar affair but always pay to respect. 8.00
3 SUPER JOE *** Never likely last start with support before good work late but can win if on his game early. 6.00
4 NORTHERN KNIGHT ** In the mix last start without being winning threat and a must for exotics. 10
5 SMART VINTAGE *** Traffic issue when running on last start and would give this a shake with more luck in running. 6.00
6 GOLD FAITH ** Excuses not to finish closer last start and worth thought on a repeat of that effort. 12
7 HUMDINGER *** Just missed last start and handles the Poly so can win this. 6.00
8 BIG BANKER *** Showed last start he is more than competitive in Class 4 and get this chance from gate 1. 8.00
9 DREAMER LEGEND ** Ran on very well at odds over 1200m last start and have to respect although Poly form a concern. 12
10 BIG GUARDIAN ** Form better than it reads and could be competitive at odds. 33
Race 9
Selections; 3 DINGHU MOUNTAIN - 8 HIMALAYA DRAGON - 6 LIM'S SHOT - 7 SPLINTER
A terrific KSC Poly sprint and truth be told you could box four horses in an exotic bet and not get one on the podium. So safe to say go wide in the novelties and look for value, as it should be about. Where to start? DINGHU MOUNTAIN will find this easier than the Patron's Bowl, gets blinkers and can win while HIMALAYA DRAGON had plenty of excuses last start and gets M Rodd so gets his chance. KATAGAS and MCGREGOR are also in solid form and should finish in the mix. There are three last start winners in the field - MR LUCK, LIM'S SHOT and SPLINTER - and all can win again with LIM'S SHOT and SPLINTER both impressive in Class 4 Company.
1 MR LUCK *** Did it tough last start when winning to show why is always a show in Poly sprints. Keep safe. 6.00
2 FLAK JACKET * Led before fading last start and needs to find a length late before considering. 10
3 DINGHU MOUNTAIN *** Will find this easier than the Patron's Bowl and gets blinkers back on. Big show. 6.00
4 MCGREGOR *** In the mix at odds over 1400m and has won this trip and track so can figure. 12
5 REACH FOR THE SUN * Struggled when resuming and have to take on trust. 50
6 LIM'S SHOT *** Won very well in Class 4 over 1200m last start and this trip looks his caper so happy to follow. 4.00
7 SPLINTER *** Another last start very good Class 4 winner who has to be a big show in this. 4.00
8 HIMALAYA DRAGON *** Traffic excuses in straight not to win last start but the long time between drinks is a big concern. 12
9 TERMS OF REFERENCE ** Did it tough last start and worth another each way look at odds. 20
10 KATAGAS *** Hard to fault honest form of late and gets a "Poon Train" 2kg claim so can win. 8.00
Race 10
Selections; 5 LIM'S RACER - 6 RAINBOW ROYAL - 1 THE COSMOS - 2 GREY FALCON
The lucky last looks a top-heavy affair with the six highest rated horses all in good enough form to win while the rest are struggling. Two of the those with winning hopes - WONDERFUL KNIGHT and LIM'S RACER - are resuming and while WONDERFUL KNIGHT can be tough to follow with market best guide, LIM'S RACER won at Group level as a Juvenile and could be hard to beat here if he returns in good order (market again a good guide). Of the others, THE COSMOS and BLACK MAMBO both won last start over 1000m and are worth following while GREY FALCON just missed (behind Black Mambo) and goes close again with luck from the wide gate. RAINBOW ROYAL has also drawn badly but showed plenty late last start and must be respected.
1 THE COSMOS *** Did it tough when winning over 1000m last start and could be hard to beat again from gate 4. 3.00
2 GREY FALCON *** Did everything bar win last start with heavy support and pay to keep following although wide draw is a concern. 3.00
3 WONDERFUL KNIGHT ** Resuming for new stable. Can be tough to follow and ran off track at recent trial but keep safe with blinkers/tongue-tie. 12
4 BLACK MAMBA *** Won a good battle over 1000m last start and in this a long way from gate 3. 5.00
5 LIM'S RACER *** Smart type resuming after just fair campaign. Can win sans tongue-tie with Poon booked. 5.00
6 RAINBOW ROYAL *** Grew wings late to place when resuming and expect much the same from wide gate. 8.00
7 SUPERSONICSURPRISE * Traffic issues and returned not striding last start but the effort OK so should improve. 20
8 MAGNETISE * Resuming and easier to ignore. 100
9 NATIVE LUCK * Excuses and eased out of race at Australian debut but like to see something before considering. 100
10 IMPEDIMENT * Maiden who will improve but needs easier. 100
11 ASTROCANDY * Maiden and no. 200
