Race analysis and race selections for Sunday's racing at Kranji
18 Jun 2017 | Singapore Turf Club

RACE 1

The Mark Walker yard is on fire. Gannet (4) has the foot on the till going with his fast-closing third at his last outing. Back in trip. Winning turn is around the corner. El Camino (5) ran a cheeky third last time out. Will relish the extra 200m. Include in calculations. Phidias (6) ran below expectations last time out, but he also blundered at the start. Still did well to run sixth to the smart Chopin’s Fantaisie. Blinkers on. Drawn awkwardly, but still not without claims in this. Laughing Buffalo (8) has lost his way after showing some promise early doors. Back in trip. Michael Rodd back on. Winkers off. Watch out.

RACE 2

James Peters’ debutant Made In China (4) scored an impressive barrier trial win last Thursday. Looks hard to beat on paper even if he has drawn the widest. Farees (3) is not without qualities going on his last two seconds. Will be charging home late. Blinkers on. Must be rated with an excellent chance. On his brilliant debut second, Raptor (12) should be in with a major say if he reproduces that form here, but the horror gate is a concern. Six furlongs is right up his alley. Bring Me Joy (1) ran his heart out on debut but was run down late. Has plenty of gate speed, and if he tries this again here, he may hold on for a place this time.

RACE 3

On his last-start flying third to Southern Man, Royal Guard (4) should be taken seriously from now on. Big say here. Dragon Kingdom (9) is back from a short let-up. In his element in this. Often outpaced, but chance would be enhanced if he can be ridden closer to the speed. Hello Michelle (3) finished just a stride away in fourth the same race as Royal Guard ran third in. Gallant mare who won’t be out of her depth in this. Polytrack specialist My Horse (1) led at his last run but was swamped inside the last 200m. Better off ridden just behind the speed. Can bounce back.

RACE 4

Consistent mare Star Genius (3) is close to her best form. She steamed home for third to Nova Missile last time out. Yard on fire. Will appreciate the extra 200m. Major threat from the good gate. Southern Man (2) has won two in a row but things will get tougher for him now. Also taking his first test over turf. Still deserves plenty of respect. Montaigne (1) tried to make all at his last start, but Lucky Stride outsprinted him. In fine fettle and will be hard to topple if he is left alone upfront. Former Malaysian Eclair Splash (6) sprang a mini-upset at his Kranji debut. Did not run quick time but would have improved a couple of lengths since. Drawn off the track. Place claims.

RACE 5

Many chances in this. Lim’s Sparkle (12) lost the race on protest at his last start. On that form, he should be a leading chance here. Funkadelic (9) got off the mark at his last outing but he did not beat much. Faces similar opposition. Decent claims. Be Bold (1) will find this a shade easier. Ran on fairly at his last run when fourth to Clarton Super. Only query is the bad gate, but he should still be thereabouts inside the concluding stages. Iking (2) is not getting any younger but older horses from that yard seem to be getting a second lease on life. Loomed as a threat last time out but peaked on his run. Nice alley. Worth some consideration.

RACE 6

Small but pretty select field. Olympic Anthem (1) got going a bit late at his last run. In good nick and though he is a tricky horse to ride, if things go his way, he may prove too good here. The General (4) is always a factor in such races. Lost no marks at his last run when he got a little squeezed in the straight and had to come out for his run. Got going again once he found clear room to finish close to the placegetters. Can take a hand in this. Don’t underestimate Pioneer Seven (6). Tends to pop up when least expected. Showed he does not have to roll forward to win these days, as he did at his last-start win. No weight on his back again. Solid claims. Raise No Doubt (2) is resuming. Honest sort who has been trialling in good order in readiness for his comeback. Has a good first-up record. Well drawn. Keep safe.

RACE 7

Honest galloper Lim’s Showcase (7) ran better than expected at his comeback from a seven-month spell. Does not have to lead. Versatile sort who can return to winning ways here. Clarton Super (5) has strung up two wins in a row but tackles better cattle here. In great form on the training tracks. Progressive sort who can deliver again. Caorunn (1) was a bit of a letdown at his last start. Had every chance but could not quicken when Tannhauser took off. This is easier. Top-three finish on the cards. Red Dawn (4) did not put in a blow at his last outing when drawn wide. Scored an impressive win first-up from a layoff at his previous start. Wide barrier again, but with a bit of luck, he can finish in the money.

RACE 8

Outstanding Patron’s Bowl. Champion galloper Debt Collector (1) did everything right at his racing comeback in the Stewards’ Cup, but his lack of race fitness told inside the last 200m. Will be presented a much fitter horse second-up. The horse to beat. Lim’s Cruiser (4) was not quite suited by the pace in the Stewards’ Cup. Was also screaming for the mile. Drawn a little awkwardly, but can exact revenge. On his Stewards’ Cup win, Alibi (2) certainly ticks all the boxes. First attempt over the mile but all indications point towards him seeing it out. From his gate No 5, he will probably elect to sit outside the lead again. Will give this another shake. Lim’s Samurai (7) is a promising sort who certainly deserves a shot at this. This is a big leap in class, but on his recent form, he may well measure up.

RACE 9

Chances galore. Kokoni (6) scored a nice win second-up, but this looks a touch tougher. He seems to be a horse with some scope, though, and cannot be ignored for another dose. Well drawn. Ottawa (5) enjoyed the rise to 1400m at his last run, and duly scored. Mile right up his alley. Perfect gate. If ridden the same way, he will have a strong say here. Lim’s Shot (3) got up to score narrowly last time out. Has trained on and is again worth a thought.  Red Claw (1) has done nothing wrong in three outings thus far. Brisbane import who won’t remain a maiden here for too long. Blinkers off, but barrier No 15 looks daunting. May have to settle for a minor placing this time.

RACE 10

Senior jockey Vlad Duric gets on top of Speedy Phoenix (8), a clear pointer to his chances. The US-bred grey roan let down nicely to score at his second outing. Looks like a nice sprinter in the making, but the outermost alley would make some think twice. Can still double up. Effortless (6) has a lot more experience than Speedy Phoenix, and also has a nice turn of foot. A genuine pace will suit him down to a tee. Go close. Watch out for Marea Negro (10). Luckless at her last outing when she could not get a clear run in the straight. Can finish in the quartet. Wide gate against her, though. Last-start winner Xiong Fong (7) will find this a different kettle of fish, but if he gets the right breaks, he may hold his own here.
