Friday meeting preview
10 Aug 2017 | By Larry Foley - kranjiracing.com
Friday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.

It might be a case of treading carefully early in the eight race card on Friday at Kranji before gaining confidence late and hopefully coming home with the proverbial wet sail.

In saying that, it will pay to keep an eye on the early markets with SUPER DAN a good value option in the opener.

The 4YO is still a maiden but certainly showed enough early in his career to think he is better than Class 5 and he should show his best in a field with little depth.

Oddly, the most competitive race on the card - a BM83 Poly mile (race 5) - only has seven runners but six look to have serious winning hopes.

And given there looks to be plenty of early speed with PREDITOR and ORDER OF THE SUN and a swooper in GOOD NEWS engaged, there will be no rest for the wicked and a busy finish is expected.

A solid Class 3 and two Class 4 Poly sprints close what should have been a solid nights racing and JULIUS CAESAR in the last could be a good way for punters to go home happy.

The now 4YO has been freshened after a solid Class 4 turf run and should be hard to hold out on what he showed when breaking his maiden status on the Poly at start two.

Best Bets: (JULIUS CAESAR race 8, win), (SUPER DAN race 1, value) and (THE WIND race 7, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 5 (1, 2, 4, 5 and 6), race 6 (1, 2, 4, 5 and 9), race 7 (1 and 3), race 8 (1, 2, 3, 4 and 9).

Race 1
Selections; 5 SUPER DAN - 7 HOT GOLD - 6 MUSCULAR DRAGON - 3 IMMORTAL LEGACY
An extremely odd race to start Friday's meeting with close to half the field better suited to racing over longer trips. But given a few of them drop in Class, the tote may be a good guide to see if the stables think they can pinch one over 1200m on the Poly with ARR FLAIR probably the pick of that bunch. But as it stands, the horses with 1200m form are the one's to watch and the maiden SUPER DAN could be the bolter. The jockey reported issues last start and given he gets to jump from gate 1 at his first start in Class 5, he can win this on some previous good maiden form. Of the rest, HOT GOLD is backing up after being disappointing last start in a similar affair but he is worth another look carrying some 5kg less. Likewise, MUSCULAR DRAGON had support last start and was just fair but is worth another look while PRECIOUS GEM broke his maiden status last start this trip and track and worth thought again.
1 ARR FLAIR ** Will win sooner than later dropping to Class 5 but should need longer. Watch for support. 8.00
2 EASY DRAGON * Another that will grow a leg in in tech Company but only win was over the mile on the turf. 20
3 IMMORTAL LEGACY ** Broke maiden over this trip and track at odds last start and should be thereabouts again. 6.00
4 PRECIOUS GEM * Another Class dropper who should need longer and happy to wait. 20
5 SUPER DAN *** Maiden who looked to have issues last start and can win from gate 1 on previous form. 4.00
6 MUSCULAR DRAGON *** Supported and ran on well late last start over 1400m and can follow on the Poly. 4.00
7 HOT GOLD *** Disappointing in similar affair last Friday but drops 5kg with handy claim and pay to give another chance. 4.00
8 OVER EASY * Blinkers off and should need longer. 33
9 SHE'S THE ONE ** Maiden who grew wings late in weak race last start to place and can include in exotics. 12
10 DESTINY KNIGHT * Reassess over longer. 33
Race 2
Selections; 2 CAI POH WANG - 3 GOLD REWARD - 6 ACE HARBOUR - 7 SAINT LINCOLN
A race with no depth and hopefully the winning chances can be narrowed down to CAI POH WANG and GOLD REWARD. And while the latter will probably start a red-hot favourite, CAI POH WANG has exposed form on the Poly, which could count for plenty. The 4YO also showed last start the mile is not an issue and he should get every chance in this field to win. GOLD REWARD certainly handles the mile and gets winkers but has been disappointing not to have won with heavy support of late. He is also a query on the Poly given his trial form on this surface and he is a risk at his first race start on the all-weather. The only other horses that could give them a scare is ACE HARBOUR who also gets winkers and should get the favours from gate 1.
1 ANGHIARI * Appreciates maiden Company and first up run but like to see something before considering. 50
2 CAI POH WANG *** In form and handles the Poly so a big show in this. 3.00
3 GOLD REWARD *** Desperate for a result given heavy support and query this surface but wins soon with winkers added. 2.00
4 HIGH STREET * Struggles as a rule. 100
5 ECLAIR SHADOW ** Has been disappointing at recent outings but did it tough last start and may appreciate the Poly mile. 12
6 ACE HARBOUR ** Ran on well last start over this trip and gets winkers so could figure prominently from gate 3. 8.00
7 SAINT LINCOLN ** Race form only fair but recent trial OK and only placing was on this surface so keep safe. 12
8 THREE LIONS ** Tough to follow but ran on well when placing over 1800m on the Poly two starts back and worth thought in exotics. 20
9 ALWAYS THERE * Easier to ignore. 100
10 SPEEDY WARRIOR * Tough to follow and drawn wide but should appreciate stepping up to the mile. 33
11 PURE WHITE * Yet to win in 44 starts and blinkers off but will go forward and give a sight. 20
Race 3
Selections; 1 SOUTHERN MAN - 5 ROYAL GUARD - 4 ETTIJAH - 3 BLACK MAGIC
You don't have to be a savant to figure out that SOUTHERN MAN will start at a very short price back on the Poly and should be hard to beat on what is his preferred surface. The 4YO won at his first two career starts on the Poly before just battling on the turf at his next two and N Juglall should try to make every post a winner from gate 6. ROYAL GUARD looks the danger. The Shane Baertschiger 5YO has yet to win at eight starts in Singapore but rarely runs a bad race and gets a Matthew Poon 2kg claim to get that elusive result. Nothing else jumps off the page but ETTIJAH will appreciate dropping back to 1200m and his stablemate, MAJESTIC EMPRESS, could go well at her Singapore debut off the back of a good trial.
1 SOUTHERN MAN *** Obviously has an excellent Poly record so hard to beat back on his preferred surface. 1.80
2 MAJESTIC EMPRESS ** Former Kiwi mare who won one from two before arriving and has trialled well locally. Keep safe. 12
3 BLACK MAGIC ** Appreciates first run back from a bleeding attack and always some show in races like this. 20
4 ETTIJAH ** Dropping back in trip after tough run and did win maiden over 1200m so can include somewhere. 12
5 ROYAL GUARD *** Lost touch with the leading group before running on last start and should figure in this finish. 4.00
6 EURO ZONE ** Won easily in Class 5 Company last start and was competitive in Class 4 previously so should keep them honest. 8.00
7 STEEL CUTTER * Improving with each run in Singapore and gets gate 1 but query this surface. 33
8 YULONG HOLY PRAISE ** Nothing last start but gets blinkers back and worth thought on effort two starts back. 20
9 SUN EMPIRE * Reassess in Class 5 over 1400m. 50
10 GOLDEN MILE ** Prefer in Class 5 but gets blinkers back on and has been showing enough to keep safe at odds. 20
Race 4
Selections; 3 SPACE ODDITY - 1 MAGIC PAINT - 9 GOLDEN JADE - 11 CASSIS OOLONG
This field could be described as weak at best and not a bad time to see what the Chef's specials are or grab a cold beverage. Or both. But every race has a winner and while it's hard to be confident, SPACE ODDITY could show up. The 5YO mares only win was this trip and track and showed enough form last start to follow with M Poon on-board. Of the rest, MAGIC PAINT had excuses last start and showed two starts ago he can finish in the mix in weak races while CASSIS OOLONG and GOLDEN JADE came through the same race and can be considered. TURQUOISE SON drops back in trip and certainly showed enough prior to consider.
1 MAGIC PAINT *** Forget he went around last Friday (checked badly) and worth thought on previous effort. 6.00
2 FAST JET ** Not a mile away last start in similar affair and gate 1 helps. 6.00
3 SPACE ODDITY *** Improved effort last start and gets top apprentice from gate 1 so keep safe. 7.00
4 CHINA FALCON * Nothing last start over the mile and drawn wide so easier to ignore. 20
5 PERFECT CHALLENGER * All sorts of issues last start (roarer and lame) and have to take on trust. 20
6 KING CROSS * Ran on OK in a similar affair last start and could do the same. 20
7 EVERTRUST ** Did it tough last start and drawn badly again but some show with luck in running. 12
8 TURQUOISE SON *** Nothing last start over the mile but form this trip three starts back should hold up. 8.00
9 GOLDEN JADE *** Issues last start (not striding) when supported in similar affair and worth another look. 6.00
10 BASTION ** Long-term maiden who drops back in trip after solid placing and can consider in this weak field. 10
11 CASSIS OOLONG *** Last won in May 2014 but in OK form and goes close in this field. 6.00
12 SGFIFTY * Struggles. 50
13 HANDSOME BAB * No. 50
Race 5
Selections; 4 PREDITOR - 2 GOOD NEWS - 1 TWICKENHAM - 6 MIGHTY KENNY
Small fields often throw up very tricky affairs and this BM89 Poly mile is no exception. In fact, bar the bottom weight EXCELLENCY who has yet to win in Singapore, you can make a winning case for the other six runners. What makes this even tougher is two runners that can win in TWICKENHAM and PREDITOR are both having their first runs on the Polytrack. Of the two, PREDITOR comes off a solid Derby run and will probably lead them up in this from gate 1 although ORDER OF THE SUN in gate 2 could keep him busy out front. Which will give the swooper GOOD NEWS a great run into the race late and he goes close. Last start winner, MIGHTY KENNY, and ROBIN HOOD also win without surprising.
1 TWICKENHAM *** Having first start on the Poly but form better than it reads and appreciates the Company so keep safe. 4.00
2 GOOD NEWS *** Always doing best work late and step up the mile on the Poly could see a result. 4.00
3 ORDER OF THE SUN ** Resuming and will give a sight over the mile. 9.00
4 PREDITOR *** Another yet to race on the Poly but will go forward and Derby run good enough to win this. 3.00
5 ROBIN HOOD *** Ran on well late last start and last win was on the Poly so should go well. 10
6 MIGHTY KENNY *** Ran on very well to win last start in KSC Company and enjoys the Poly so can follow on lightweight. 5.00
7 EXCELLENCY * Has shown glimpses but yet to win in Singapore and may need easier. 20
Race 6
Selections; 2 RED DAWN - 5 UNCONQUERED - 1 SUPER SIX - 4 MIGHTY CONQUEROR
Plenty of good form in this race including three last start winners in MIGHTY CONQUEROR, CHAMPAGNE REIN and RIVER OF GOLD. All three will find this tougher than Class 4 but MIGHTY CONQUEROR in particular won with a leg in the air and has to be respected. But plenty of others in great form including RED DAWN and UNCONQUERED who both found one better at their last runs. RED DAWN just missed over 1200m but has won over this trip and he could be hard to hold out while UNCONQUERED has been showing plenty and is in this a very long way. Of the rest, SUPER SIX very much appreciates the Company and wins without surprising while SHADOW OF WAR will strip fitter and may look the winner at some stage.
1 SUPER SIX *** Wide draw a concern but always a winning show in this Company so keep safe. 12
2 RED DAWN *** In fine form and has won this trip so has to be a show. 5.00
3 SECRET MISSION * Resuming and enjoys the Poly but hard to have on recent form. 33
4 MIGHTY CONQUEROR *** Competitive in this Company previously but last start Class 4 win very strong and pay to follow. 5.00
5 UNCONQUERED *** Lost no friends in slightly easier Company last start and in this a long way with 54kg. 4.00
6 CHAMPAGNE REIN ** Broke through for overdue Singapore win in Class 4 last start and pay to follow. 8.00
7 RIVER OF GOLD ** Back up solid run with nice enough Class 4 win and another to keep safe. 12
8 CONFLIGHT ** Impossible to follow on form but showed enough last start to keep safe. 12
9 SHADOW OF WAR *** Found out late when resuming but improves for the run and can win. 12
10 MYSTIC MASTER ** Gate a concern but trialling and racing well enough o consider. 12
11 SUPER LINE ** Resuming and will be running on late at each-way value. 20
12 HOST THE NATION * Runs on when in the mood but looking for Class 4. 50
13 LUMINIFF LAD ** Appreciates first up run and would be competitive on a good day. 33
Race 7
Selections; 1 THE WIND - 3 COLUMBUS - 6 AUSPICIOUS ACE - 4 RICH FORTUNE
A very interesting race where the only horse to finish in the top three at his last start is the debut winner COLUMBUS. The now 4YO might not have beaten a lot on that occasion but did have to jump from a wide gate, so his win had merit and was on the back of a good trial. He will be short though and THE WIND might give him a run for his money. The 5YO has been running on well of late and had all sorts of excuses last start and he could be hard to hold out in this field with blinkers off. Nothing else jumps off the page on recent form although AUSPICIOUS ACE will be running on late, RICH FORTUNE should appreciate being back on the Poly while THUNDER CAT is better than what he showed last start.
1 THE WIND *** All sorts of excuses last start when supported and that effort suggests he can win this with blinkers off. 4.00
2 ZIPPY GENERAL * Form solid and drawn the ace but struggles on the Poly as a rule. 33
3 COLUMBUS *** Won well enough on debut to follow in Class 4 with support likely. 2.00
4 RICH FORTUNE ** Improved efforts at recent outings and should appreciate being back on the Poly. Keep safe. 8.00
5 STAR KING * Needs to improve. 33
6 AUSPICIOUS ACE ** No luck at the barriers again but ran on well last start and expect the same. 8.00
7 THUNDER CAT ** Showed nothing last start but form prior has him involved somewhere. 12
8 ELISE * Resuming and trialling well but Poly race form is a concern. 12
9 LUCKY SIX * Just battling and looking or Class 5. 33
10 PERFECT GIRL * Maiden who has shown glimpses but eligible for easier. 33
11 SIR REGINALD * Reassess in easier Company. 100
Race 8
Selections; 3 JULIUS CAESAR - 1 LUCKY GIANT - 2 BOARD WALK - 9 DELFYNE
The third division of the Class 4 Poly sprints over 1200m and JULIUS CAESAR gets his chance to knock in another early career win. The I Am Invincible 4YO has been freshened after a solid run in this Company over this trip on the turf and should be hard to beat on what he showed on the Poly when breaking his maiden status two starts back. Nothing jumps off the page to beat him (so he should be short in the betting) but LUCKY GIANT was in the mix in a similar affair last start and should figure in this finish while BOARD WALK is always a show but will need luck in running after drawing wide again. Of the rest, DELFYNE is again a value runner while STAR INVINCIBLE is better than he showed last start.
1 LUCKY GIANT *** In the mix similar affair last start and will figure prominently throughout. 4.00
2 BOARD WALK *** Drawn wide again but battled away manfully last start and goes close with more luck in running. 7.00
3 JULIUS CAESAR *** Progressive type freshened after solid turf outing in this Company and hard to hold out back on winning surface. 2.00
4 STAR INVINCIBLE *** Never got involved last start and happy to give another show on good placing two starts back. 10
5 SWIFT * The is tougher than last start Class 5 win but gate 1 helps and can include in exotics. 12
6 TRIGAMY ** Showed pace at Singapore debut and will strip fitter with one eye on the market. 20
7 SOON YI ** Runs on when in the mood and gets tongue-tie but exotics look best. 33
8 SOLITAIRE ** A long time between wins but can run on with blinkers to visor. 20
9 DELFYNE *** Placed last start at odds on the back of a good trial and happy to follow. 20
10 MORALES * Reassess in Class 5. 100
11 SUN SEEKER * Doesn't mind the Poly but may be looking for Class 5. 33
