Sunday meeting preview
05 Aug 2017 | By Larry Foley - kranjiracing.com
Sunday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.

It doesn’t rain in Singapore, it pours!

Both literally in the tropical conditions and figuratively with regards to racing with not one but two Group races on Sunday.

The Group 3 Garden City Trophy over 1200m (race 6) starts that feature festival and while AFFLECK heads the ratings and the weights, it may be a couple of up-and-coming types in DISTINCTIVE DARCI and ARAMCO that appreciate the race conditions.

DISTINCTIVE DARCI has hit the ground running this campaign with two impressive wins and 52.5kg looks a fair weight in this field, while ARAMCO is a very progressive type who only has to carry 50.5kg.

No such luck for the lower rated horses in the Group 2 Chairman’s Trophy (race 8) as the 1800m event is at Weight-For-Age conditions.

As such, the top-rated horses pick themselves with WAR AFFAIR and QUECHUA likely to get plenty of support.

WELL DONE is also suited at the conditions to show his best while STORM TROOPS showed last start that he is more than up to the WFA task.

Two very different features, but two very good races!

Best Bets: (DISTINCTIVE DARCI race 6, win), (BELLUS WONDER race 1, value) and (POWER WARRIOR race 2, value).

Bankers for Jackpots: Race 7 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9), race 8 (1, 2, 4 and 5), race 9 (1, 2 and 10) and race 10 (1, 3, 4 and 6).

Race cards and Larry Foley's synopsis follows and for updates on all runners go to www.kranjiracing.com

Please note the odds listed are "reference odds" only.
Race 1
Selections; 1 BELLUS WONDER - 6 SILVER POWER - 8 SUPER BIG - 2 HONOR
An extremely weak Class 5 gives the consistent SILVER POWER a chance to break through after a run of placings; with Vlad Duric to ride from a good gate over a suitable distance in a moderate field he should be hard to beat. However, the class dropper BELLUS WONDER will improve lengths in Class 5. The 7YO hasn't won for a long time but will appreciate the Company, trip and track. It is hard to find other challengers but SUPER BIG is in solid form and won two start back (turf, 1400m) and he could show up from the good gate in this field. Market best guide on some of the maidens having their first runs in Class 5 including HONOR who gets the "Poon Train" from gate 5.
1 BELLUS WONDER *** Hasn't won for a long time but will appreciate this class. Watch for support. 6.00
2 HONOR ** Resuming. Well beaten in Maiden company at all four outings but will appreciate Class 5. Improves. 20
3 KING STEAD * Another maiden who will appreciate Class 5 but form is very ordinary. 20
4 OBSTACLES FREE * Freshened after four moderate Maiden outings. Made need longer. 20
5 RED RACKHAM * Resuming. Has shown nothing to date and has drawn badly but does drop in Class. 50
6 SILVER POWER *** Close up at recent outings. Gets a chance to break through with Vlad Duric to ride from a good gate over a suitable distance in a moderate field. 2.50
7 GIORGIO ** Drops back in trip and could be running on late in this weak field. 8.00
8 SUPER BIG ** Only win was on turf over 1400m. Yet to place in 16 poly outings could show up from the good gate in this field. 4.00
9 PROBO CHANDROSO ** 11YO who has some speed and is suited this distance but hasn't won for over two years. Should be prominent. 16
10 THINK PRETTY ** 21 start Maiden who has been racing fairly over this trip and could show up in this field. 8.00
Race 2
Selections; 8 SUPER DENMAN - 4 POWER WARRIOR - 5 SAFEER - 1 CONATUS G
A moderate Restricted Maiden where most have shown little but can improve. SUPER DENMAN put in an erratic debut but subsequently bolted in at a recent trial with blinkers on; if he repeats that, he will be hard to run down. SAFEER did not show up when debuting from a wide gate in the Golden Horseshoe but has trialled nicely since and will find this much easier from the good gate. The big improver could be POWER WARRIOR. The 3YO has shown little at two starts but gets headgear and has previously trialled well in blinkers; keep very safe. Most of the others have shown little to date with market best guide on the likes of HENG KINGDOM on debut and CONATUS G.
1 CONATUS G ** Debuted fairly and should be improved with Michael Rodd to ride. 5.00
2 HENG KINGDOM ** By Animal Kingdom. Half-brother to winner Oakfield Time. Most recent trial was fair and could show up with Manoel Nunes to ride. 7.00
3 MIGHTY PHOENIX * Gets blinkers but has shown nothing to date. Did not show up at recent trial. 33
4 POWER WARRIOR *** Gets blinkers/pacifiers after two sighters and has trialled nicely with headgear so will be the big improver. 12
5 SAFEER *** Did not show up at debut from wide gate in Golden Horseshoe but has trialled nicely since and will find this much easier from the good gate. Can be in the finish. 3.00
6 SATELLITE ROCKET ** Was hampered at debut when drawn wide. Could improve from the better gate. 20
7 SPECIAL LUCK * Needs to improve. 33
8 SUPER DENMAN *** Debuted fairly and bolted in at recent blinker trial. Should be hard to run down. 2.50
9 QUEEN OF QUEENS * Hit the wall after leading on debut and could improve with race fitness. 33
Race 3
Selections; 2 SECRET WIN - 1 OPTIMUS - 4 LEON - 3 OTTAWA
A competitive Class 4 over 1600m with multiple chances. SECRET WIN just missed last start when coming from a long way back; he gets a senior rider and should be hard to beat with a more positive ride. The stablemate OLIVER found 1800m too far last start; he has won at this trip and should be handy throughout. LEON has run on nicely at recent outings over 1400m; his only mile attempt was in the Singapore Guineas and he will find this much easier. OPTIMUS is improving with recent racing and just missed over this trip last start; he is awkwardly drawn but should be prominent throughout. The chances don't end there with recent UK imports, SITUATION and JUSTICE LASS, getting their chance over a mile.
1 OPTIMUS *** Improving with recent racing and just missed over this trip last start. Awkwardly drawn but should be prominent throughout. 7.00
2 SECRET WIN *** Just missed last start when coming from a long way back. Gets a senior rider and should be hard to beat with a more positive ride. 6.00
3 OTTAWA *** Fought hard in Novice company last start. Failed at previous attempt at this trip but other form has been solid and could make amends. 6.00
4 LEON *** Has run on nicely at recent outings over 1400m. Only mile attempt was in the Singapore Guineas and will find this much easier. Promising and should be running on. 4.50
5 OLIVER *** Found 1800m too far last start. Has won at this trip and should be handy throughout. 7.00
6 LAUGHING BUFFALO ** Finally broke through for Maiden win last start. This is harder but drops 5kg and could be running on. 20
7 PIONEER STEP * Needs to improve on recent efforts. 33
8 SITUATION ** Has performed creditably at both outings since arrival in Singapore. Only win was over 1207m but should be prominent from the good gate. 10
9 LIM'S BULLET ** Can run in and gets Manoel Nunes but has failed at both mile attempts and needs to improve on recent efforts. 16
10 BRILLIANT ONE * Has battled over this trip at past three outings. May need easier or shorter. 20
11 AMAZING MAN * Will find this easier than last start. Stepping up in distance and could show up. 16
12 JUSTICE LASS ** Has only battled since arriving in Singapore but UK form suggests this trip may suit. With no weight should get a good trip throughout. 10
Race 4
Selections; 11 SATELLITE STAR - 2 POP GEMS - 6 NEO'S CLASSIC - 5 HONGCHEN
Another moderate Class 5 where most have very poor win strike rates. Which could give SATELLITE STAR a chance to show he can handle the mile. The 5YO won well with heavy support over 1100m last start and that form might hold up in this field. Of the rest, HONGCHEN ran on solidly last start and has won at this trip on the poly while POP GEMS showed improvement with blinkers last start and can be handy from the good gate. NEO'S CLASSIC has been battling away over this trip at recent outings and should be handy throughout for Manoel Nunes while DRAGON G and THANKFULNESS are capable of showing up if they could recapture lost form. MUSCULAR DRAGON was disappointing last start dropping to Class 5 but is better than that.
1 MUSCULAR CAPTAIN ** Only win was on turf over this trip. Disappointed when supported last start. Blinkers off/tongue-tie on and could improve. 10
2 POP GEMS *** Showed improvement with blinkers last start. Drops back in trip and can be handy from the good gate. 5.00
3 SUPER G ** Yet to place in 12 outings but Michael Rodd gets back on and could show up. 20
4 DRAGON G ** Returned lame last start and recent efforts have been moderate. Has won twice at this trip and if right could be running on. 10
5 HONGCHEN *** Ran on solidly last start and has won at this trip on the poly. Well drawn and should be closing late. 3.00
6 NEO'S CLASSIC *** Has been battling away over this trip at recent outings. Well drawn and should be handy throughout for Manoel Nunes. 5.00
7 THANKFULNESS ** Led but weakened over this trip last start. Struggling at recent outings and not helped by the gate. 10
8 MOON RIVER ** Placed three starts back over this trip but has battled since. One-paced but could show up. 20
9 BIG REGARDS * Unsighted last start after a couple of improved efforts. Yet to place in 12 outings and needs to improve. 25
10 FORTUNE SPIRIT * Well back when resuming for new stable. Needs to improve. 33
11 SATELLITE STAR *** Stepping up in trip after winning with heavy support over 1100m. Pay to follow. 20
12 SHABBAT * Long term Maiden who grew wings late for a rare placing last start. Poly can test. 20
13 PURE WHITE * Yet to win in 44 starts and blinkers off but will go forward and give a sight. 33
14 BLACK DIAMOND * Hasn't won for a long time and has only battled since resuming. 33
Race 5
Selections; 2 MANGATOETOENUI - 5 TARGET - 4 GOLD CROWN - 1 EASTER MATE
Another competitive Class 4 with multiple chances. MANGATOETOENUI has run on solidly over 1400m at his most recent starts and has won over this trip so gets his chance. GOLD CROWN has been racing soundly and placed at his only mile attempt; he should be prominent from the good gate with talented apprentice Matthew Poon to ride. TARGET showed improvement when leading and fading late last start. He is fitter now and his only win before arrival was over 1609m so can show up with Manoel Nunes to ride. MR MOSA won in weaker company over 1200m when resuming; this is harder but he won a Maiden over 1560m in NZ before arrival and should get a good run throughout. Of the others, EASTER MATE battled on solidly last start and this distance suits, GANNET ran on well late last start while O'REILLY BAY is suited at this trip and could show up.
1 EASTER MATE *** Battled on solidly last start following solid win at previous start. Drops 1kg and should be handy throughout. 5.00
2 MANGATOETOENUI *** Has run on solidly over 1400m at most recent starts. Has won over this trip and should be in the finish. 4.00
3 MR MOSA ** Won in weaker company over 1200m when resuming. This is harder but won Maiden at 1560m in NZ before arrival and should get a good run throughout. 10
4 GOLD CROWN *** Racing soundly and placed at only mile attempt. Should be prominent from the good gate with talented apprentice Matthew Poon to ride. 5.00
5 TARGET *** Showed improvement when leading and fading late last start. Fitter now and only win before arrival was over 1609m. 6.00
6 MILITARY MIGHT ** Only battled last start after showing good form over this trip at two previous outings. Could show up from the good gate. 14
7 FIGHTING WARRIOR * Only battling at recent outings and may be looking for easier. 25
8 GANNET ** Ran on well late last start. Yet to win in Singapore but this trip suits and could be closing late. 10
9 O'REILLY BAY ** Won one of these three starts back but has struggled over longer since. Better suited here on turf and should get a good run throughout. 10
10 FLYING WINNER ** Battled on in Class 4 last start after Class 5 win over 1400m. Better suited at that trip but could be handy throughout. 25
11 FUNKADELIC * Won Class 5 three starts back and better suited there. 33
Race 6
Selections; 8 DISTINCTIVE DARCI - 5 WIMBLEDON - 9 ARAMCO - 4; SUPER WINNER
A very open race for a Group 3 with most resuming or having moderate form at recent outings. The horse in form and with a fitness edge is DISTINCTIVE DARCI who won the KRA Trophy convincingly at his most recent start. The 4YO is yet to win on turf but has placed in good company and should be closing late. Of those resuming WIMBLEDON is suited here and his recent trial was strong while AFFLECK gets some gear changes and has been trialling nicely and can race well fresh. ARAMCO also resumes, is promising, has no weight and could show up. Of the rest, SUPER WINNER has been trialling well since a moderate effort when resuming while POSEIDON ran well in the SAAS Fee and is trialling well and could show up.
1 AFFLECK ** Resuming after some disappointing efforts and gets some gear changes. Trialled nicely and can race well fresh. Watch for support. 10
2 FAALTLESS ** Resuming. Was battling last preparation but won this race in 2014. Recent trials have been fair and can race well fresh. 20
3 DRAGON FURY * Well back when resuming. Better on this surface but hasn't won for a long time and needs to improve. 33
4 SUPER WINNER *** Resuming. Trialling well and placed in a Lion City Cup. Could show up fresh. 5.00
5 WIMBLEDON *** Resuming. Suited here and recent trial was strong. Should be hard to hold off with Manoel Nunes to ride from the good gate. 3.00
6 POSEIDON ** Battled at most recent start but put in a solid effort in Saas Fee. Better at 1400m but trialled well and could be running on. 12
7 RAISE NO DOUBT ** Only battled when resuming and has trialled twice since. Ran 3rd in this last year. Gets a visor and could improve. 12
8 DISTINCTIVE DARCI *** In strong form and will have a fitness edge over most of these but is yet to win on turf. Should be closing late. 3.00
9 ARAMCO *** Resuming sans blinkers and trialling well. Has ability and gives this a shake with no weight. 12
Race 7
Selections; 3 MAJOR TOM - 6 BATTLE OF TROY - 5 SUPERNOVA - 4 LIM’S CASINO
A very strong BM67 with many having good recent form in similar company, although some the better chances like to lead and have tough gates. MAJOR TOM resumed well and is suited by this distance; he will get back but should be hard to hold off. BATTLE OF TROY has been running on in strong company, is well drawn and should get a good run throughout. LIM'S CASINO will find this easier than last start when coming from wide gate; he is poorly drawn again but should be prominent. BIG MAN has been racing well and suited by this distance, he too is awkwardly drawn but should be handy throughout. The chances don't end there with LIM'S REFORM, MAGIC CITY, SUPERNOVA and MARK ECLIPSE all having credentials.
1 BIG MAN ** Racing well and suited by this distance. Awkwardly drawn but should be handy throughout. 10
2 ECLIPSE SPLASH *** Scratched.
3 MAJOR TOM *** Resumed well and suited this distance. Should be hard to hold off. 5.00
4 LIM'S CASINO *** Poorly drawn again but in form and should be prominent. 8.00
5 SUPERNOVA *** Run down when resuming in this Class after being freshened. Fitter now and should be prominent throughout. Each-way all the way. 8.00
6 BATTLE OF TROY *** Has been running on in strong company. Well drawn and in this up to his ears. 8.00
7 BILLY BRITAIN * Drops back in distance and back onto turf. Might find this company too strong. 33
8 LIM'S REFORM *** In good form and suited this distance. Should be running on. 14
9 MAGIC CITY *** Racing well. This is harder but should get a good run throughout. 16
10 MARK ECLIPSE ** Won in Class 4 last start. This is harder but should be handy throughout. 16
11 LONGHU * Has struggled at past two outings since Class 4 win. Better on poly. 25
12 CHEETAH ON FIRE * Better on poly over longer. 33
13 SHOW FAR SHOW GOOD ** This is tougher than recent outings but in solid form and can be included in exotics. 16
14 FIRST PRECINCT * Might find this too hard. 25
15 TARAMEA * Poorly drawn and needs to improve on recent outings. 33
Race 8
Selections; 1 WAR AFFAIR - 2 QUECHUA - 4 WELL DONE - 5 STORM TROOPS
Any Group race at Weight-For-Age conditions is a beauty and this edition of the Chairman's Trophy is no exception. And is often the case when doing form at WFA conditions, you start at the top of the ratings and work down. WAR AFFAIR is easily in best at the race conditions off a rating of 116 and while he hasn't been at his very best of late and returned a roarer last start, his recent form is good enough to think this race suits and he can win. Likewise, QUECHUA picks himself off 106 but obviously his last start winning form has him probably starting favourite over 1800m. Of the rest, STORM TROOPS showed last start he is up to the WFA task while WELL DONE was never involved in the QEII and looks well placed here to show his best. The rest, including last start winner BLUE SWEDE, are tested at the WFA conditions but should be more than competitive.
1 WAR AFFAIR *** Returned a roarer last start when going close with heavy weight and has trialled well since. Big show. 3.00
2 QUECHUA *** Won the QEII Cup with a leg in the air and has to be a big show at WFA conditions. 3.50
3 TIME ODYSSEY ** Last run better than the result and in this a long way. 16
4 WELL DONE *** Never got a run at them from a bad gate in the QEII and gets his chance to show his best with blinkers added. 12
5 STORM TROOPS *** Showed last start he more than handles WFA conditions and has to be considered. 5.00
6 BLUE SWEDE ** Hard to fault form but tested at the WFA conditions. 10
7 PERFECT P ** Flew home to just miss behind Blue Swede last start over the mile and worth thought. 10
8 ABSOLUTE MIRACLE ** Tested at WFA conditions but run in the Derby better than the result and can include in exotics at odds. 20
9 SONG TO THE MOON * Only fair in the Derby but could be running on with tongue-tie off. 33
10 FOREVER YOUNG ** Guineas winner who was disappointing last start but gets in with light weight and could add value to exotics. 20
Race 9
Selections; 10 JUSTICE DAY - 1 ANONYMOUS - 2 CAORUNN - 6 ARES
A very odd Class 3 turf sprint where three horses that feature heavily in winning discussions have yet to actually win on the turf in Singapore. ANONYMOUS, CAORUNN and JUSTICE DAY all look well placed to win and it might be a case of now or never on the turf in a race with no real standouts. JUSTICE DAY is yet to win in Singapore but races on the pace and he will be in this a long way with G Boss steering. ANONYMOUS has four Poly wins to his name but handles the turf and will work into this late. CAORUNN has enough pace to lead and that could count for plenty over this trip and track but he may be paddling late. Blanket over the rest - including last start winner, KOLOMBIA - with the market a very good guide.
1 ANONYMOUS *** Yet to win on the turf but more than handles the surface and will work into this late. 4.00
2 CAORUNN *** Will lead and suited here to be in this a very long way. 6.00
3 TOUCH ME NOT ** Resuming and goes well enough first up to consider in exotics. 12
4 KOLOMBIA ** Made every post a winner when blinkers went on last start and pay to follow. 10
5 SECRET MISSION * Resuming and having a rare turf run and might be easier to ignore from the widest gate. 50
6 ARES ** Has been running on well at odds at his last couple but might need a tad longer to win. 12
7 AWATERE ** Ran on very well last start on the Poly and better suited on the turf so must consider. 12
8 KNIGHT WAGER ** Last run better than the result and can include in exotics at odds. 20
9 ELITE STAR ** Two runs this campaign have been good and another to keep very safe. 10
10 JUSTICE DAY *** Finding it hard to break Singapore duck but can race handy and in this a very long way. 8.00
11 OXBOW SUN ** Couldn't match it with a couple of handy types last start but battled away and can include in exotics. 20
12 EFFORTLESS ** Honest and suited back in trip but needs Class 4 to win. 20
13 SUPER FORTUNE ** Won a relatively weak Class 4 at Singapore debut and would need to improve again to give this a shout. 12
14 STORM TROOPER * Won over the mile in easier Company last start and that may be his caper. 20
15 WHOSE ELSE'S ** Should need easier but has no weight and could be competitive from gate 2. 20
Race 10
Selections; 3 BEAR WITNESS - 6 BROTHER WIND - 1 SOUTHERN DRAGON - 4 FAREES
Some promising types in the lucky last with both SOUTHERN DRAGON and BEAR WITNESS enjoying more than solid starts to their respective racing careers. Both should figure prominently and BEAR WITNESS has yet to miss a place at three turf runs so his camp will be confident he is more than up to winning in Class 4 Company. SOUTHERN DRAGON is also honest and looks suited in Class 4 over 1400m with his trainer opting for former Malaysian-based apprentice, T Krisna and a 3kg claim. Plenty of solid opposition including BROTHER WIND who looks in good form this campaign and could be hard to hold out while last start maiden winner, FAREES, looks the type that can go on with the job. Go wide in the skinny end of exotics.
1 SOUTHERN DRAGON *** Promising type who has won over this trip. Some show with Krisna claim. 12
2 JACKFISH ** Thereabouts without being a threat of late but can include in exotics. 12
3 BEAR WITNESS *** Progressive and should figure heavily in this finish. 5.00
4 FAREES *** Knocked in well-deserved maiden win over this trip last start and pay to follow. 4.00
5 LITTLE BIG MAN ** Looked to have every chance in this Company last start and may need a tad easier than this to win. 8.00
6 BROTHER WIND *** Ran on well against the bias last start with support and hard to hold out in this. 3.00
7 APOLLO ** Took a drop to Class 5 to win but was competitive previously in this Company so can include in exotics. 20
8 GET GOING ** Refuses to run a bad race but also refuses to win so take on trust. 8.00
9 PARKER ** Battled on well last start and always some show with Juglall aboard. 12
10 PEER GYNT * Coming off a shocker and have to take on trust. 50
11 SUN SEEKER ** Should need easier but been thereabouts at odds of late and could add value to exotics. 33
12 MURDOCH * Two career wins this trip but is looking for easier. 33
