Race analysis and race selections for Sunday's racing at Kranji
05 Aug 2017 | Singapore Turf Club

RACE 1

Three or four winning chances in this first race. Silver Power (6) moved to another yard after his last-start defeat as the favourite. Sat one-off the leader and wilted in the straight. Should get a more ground-saving run from barrier No 2 this time. Shadow roll on. Can make amends. From the inside alley, Super Big (8) can roll forward. Chance if he can run on his own terms. Giorgio (7) passed a few tired horses at his last outing. Can sneak into the minors with a bit of luck. Bellus Wonder (1) has been out of form, but is dropping in class. Good barrier can help him take up a forward spot. Place claims.

RACE 2

Better was expected from Super Denman (8) at his debut. Took up a good spot but stayed one-paced in the run home. Will strip fitter. Blinkers on. Worth another chance. Heng Kingdom (2) has shown good form at his barrier trials. Not 100% ready but is capable of making presence felt in this moderate field. Conatus G (1) did not run too badly at his first start. Drawn in outermost alley. Improvement expected. Blinker-pacifiers go on Power Warrior (4). Likely improver in this. Better things in store.

RACE 3

A few choice picks in this. Ottawa (3) came close at his last outing. Big say. He will, however, have to look out for Secret Win (2) who has been a model of consistency of late. Will charge home. Situation (8) has done nothing wrong in two starts. Will appreciate step-up to 1600m. Marble one is extra bonus. Optimus (1) bounced back to form at his last outing when he led only to be caught late by Easter Mate. Freshened up and should be right in the mix again.

RACE 4

If Satellite Star (11) reproduces his last-start winning run, he should be right in the mix again. Top prospect. Neo’s Classic (6) has been showing significant improvement with the blinkers on. Has drawn an alley, which can help him with a ground-saving run. Shabbat (12) ran a cheeky third at his last start. Even looked like he could overhaul the winner Satellite Prince at one stage. Wide gate against him this time. Faces stiffer task but if things go his way again, he can pinch a place again. Hongchen (5) made some ground at the business end at his last race. Will relish extra 200m. Nice gate.

RACE 5

No standout in this race. Gannet (8) produced a nice turn of foot to finish a close second to Saraab last time out. Knocking on the door. Military Might (6) won’t be far when the whips are cracking. Good gate. Competitive in such races. Easter Mate (1) loomed as a threat at his last race, but conceded too much ground. Solid claims if he is not so outpaced. US-bred Target (5) put up a much more encouraging performance at his third start. Drawn awkwardly.

RACE 6

Open Garden City Trophy this year. Even though this represents a major leap in class, Distinctive Darci (8) is holding the best form against those, no doubt more seasoned, but many of them resuming. Only 52.5kgs to carry. Big test, but he has the qualities to shine here. On the way Super Winner (4) won his two recent barrier trials, especially the second one last Tuesday, he seems to have overcome his past issues and is ready to get his career back on track. Can run over turf as well. Awkward alley is only query, but still has a big say. Wimbledon (5) is back from a break since his unplaced run in the Group 1 Lion City Cup. Seems to have come back in fine fettle. Good barrier. Place claims. Affleck (1) is also resuming but after an even longer absence. Trialled well to finish second to War Affair last Tuesday. Crossover noseband and tongue-tie off. Can surprise.

RACE 7

Nice little race. Major Tom (3) returned to his best after a four-month spell. Jumps from barrier No 1. If he gets an economical run here, he will be hard to hold out. One horse who can give him a run for his money is Magic City (9). The Brazilian-bred has a knack of fighting his way to the line. Should take some beating again.  Battle Of Troy (6) seems to be more focused with the blinkers on. Working well and remains a strong factor. Big Man (1) is always a threat if he takes charge without getting disturbed. If he can work across early, he can deal a blow.

RACE 8

Even Chairman’s Trophy this year. Hard to split two, let alone four. Never underestimate Quechua (2). Bounced back to form in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup. Sound as a bell and will be in this a long way. Wears blinkers again. On the way War Affair (1) won his barrier trial on Tuesday, fans will be confident their champion is back to his best. Ideal gate. New jockey on board. Exercise caution but on best form, he would be unbeatable in here. Storm Troops (5) may not have the touch of class the first two have, but he always tries hard. Made stacks of ground to run third to Quechua in the QEII Cup. Blue Swede (6) regained his old finish to score at his last start. Form is still there. Can hold his own if in the mood.

RACE 9

Debut winner Super Fortune (13) is up in grade. No weight on his back. Can double the dose. Ares (6) steamed home for third over 1400m six weeks ago. Seems to have tightened up further. Bears watching. Anonymous (1) ran his usual honest race when third to Mr Luck last time out. Backmarker who will come onto the scene late in the piece. Pacifiers off. Elite Star (9) felt the pinch a little second-up. Horse who is not without qualities. Quartet finish on the cards.

RACE 10

Going with Bear Witness (3). Again fought his heart out but found two better at his last outing in a Novice race. Will be right in the thick of the action. Little Big Man (5) came within a whisker to winning two starts back. This is no harder. Bold run expected even if he is drawn a little awkwardly. Farees (4) has not taken long to show his wares. Still working a treat but may have to be used up to get across from wide alley. Top three finish. Brother Wind (6) has a nice turn of foot. Tends to arrive too late, but if his rider can launch him at the right time, he will be among the late swoopers.
