Race analysis and race selections for Sunday's racing at Kranji
08 Jul 2017 | Singapore Turf Club

RACE 1

These are maidens but a couple have shown some ability already. Happy Baby (4) is a huge chance here if his last race is anything to go by. Chances enhanced further by barrier No 1. Leading hope. He will have to contend with Farees (8) who has been threatening at his last couple of starts. Nice gate. Will relish extra 200m. Amiability (2) caught the eye with a fourth-placed finish two runs back. Seven furlongs should suit him even better. Can spring an upset. Beijing Star (9) was well beaten at his last outing but he did make stacks of ground to finish fourth. Wide gate. Outside chance.

RACE 2

Quite a few chances in this. Natural Impulse (8) is back in form and is down in grade. Drawn awkwardly. If he can find a good posie in transit, he will take a strong hand in this. Secret Squirrel (5) had a freshen-up since his maiden win on May 21. Ran a nice barrier trial last Thursday. Bright chance to double the dose even if he takes on better company here. Miss Blanchett (9) scored a hard-fought win at Class 5 level last time out. No reason why she can’t reproduce the same form here. Mr Mosa (7) has yet to score but has poked his head in a few times. Has drawn barrier No 1. Blinkers off. Commands respect.

RACE 3

On his solid third to Chopin’s Fantaisie on June 4, Leon (5) could return to winning ways here. In the hunt for a long way. Little Big Man (7) looked like he would go on and win easily last time out but High Council worried him out of it. Top three finish. Lim’s Casino (2) tried to make all at his last outing but was swamped late to still run a close fourth. Bears watching. Taichi Belt (8) dead-heated with Land Below D Wind at his last outing back in March. Not seen since but looks to be in good shape on the training tracks. Nice gate. Tongue-tie on. Can go well fresh.

RACE 4

Don’t look beyond Redoubt (1). Changed yard and looked in great form in a winning barrier trial last Thursday. May crack it for first win here even from the wide alley. Blinkers replace by shadow roll. Tongue-tie on. Irish-bred Silver Sky (8) rattled home late at his second outing. Making good headway. There is a race for him soon. Gets back and won’t worry too much about wide barrier. Venus De Milo (12) ran a much better race at her second outing. Popped up late for third. Must be factored in from now on. Brazilian-bred Boy Wonder (4) ran below expectations at his debut. Trialled impressively last Tuesday and may turn it around second-up. Drawn off the track, though.

RACE 5

Trainer Ricardo Le Grange holds a strong hand in this race with four runners. Of the quartet, The Capital (1) stands out. Finally goes out over 2000m on turf. Stayer who should prove too good in this. Winkers on. Chairman (7) is another one of those Irish imports who will be in his element over such trips. One of the main contenders in this. El Don (6) has a brilliant turn of foot. Faces stiffer opposition but if on song, he can stake a claim here. Le Grange’s Mighty Emperor (4) made a searching run to the line to score at his last start. Seems to have trained on and there is no reason why he cannot deliver again.

RACE 6

Going with debut winner Ettijah (1). Franked his solid barrier trial form with a smart debut win a fortnight ago. Seems to have improved another couple of lengths. Low draw. Go close. Heracles (10) let down nicely for third last time out. Even looked the winner at one stage. Blinkers back on but has drawn badly this time. Will probably be snagged back to the rear from his wide gate. Place claims better. Star Strike (3) came within half-a-length of making it back-to-back at his last outing. Major threat again. Be Bold (4) is often around the mark these days. In his element here even if he is back in trip. Should go well.

RACE 7

Champion galloper War Affair (1) was not quite the same horse in the QEII Cup. He never quickened as expected but still ran on to finish seventh around 4 ½ lengths off the winner Quechua. Ran a close second in his Tuesday barrier trial. Has drawn the outermost alley. Can atone. The unpredictable Blue Swede (6) flashed home for second place to Golden Curl last time out. Will relish extra 200m. Top-three finish on the cards. Mr Fantastic (9) kept chipping away at the margin at his last outing but had to settle for third place to Golden Curl. If he brings that form here, he can fill the minors. Well drawn. Daniel (4) is struggling to keep up these days. Scored a barrier trial win on Tuesday. Lovely draw. Not completely out of this.

RACE 8

Quality field. Lim’s Knight (7) flew home for second to Clarton Super when up in grade at his last outing. Blinkers on. In the hunt for a long way. Big Man (1) is hard to catch when he bowls along upfront. Likely frontrunner in this. Place claims. Whose Else’s (9) is tackling a stronger bunch here but he is going great guns and his chances cannot be discarded. Only query is the poor gate. Queen Roulette (11) was in a striking position last time out but petered out late. Reverts to turf. Give her another chance.

RACE 9

From the way Elite Excalibur (5) rattled home for a close second to Alibi in the Patron’s Bowl (1600m), he would be an even bigger threat over the 2000m trip. Classy sort who can come out on tops here. The horror gate is the only question mark. Lim’s Cruiser (3)has been forgotten a little after his two defeats in the first two Legs. First test over 2000m but has been prepared all along for such a trip. Excellent chance. Alibi (1) is aiming for a historic clean sweep. But on the way he scraped home in the Patron’s Bowl, the extra 200m might be a bridge too far. Place claims. Infantry (2) always tries his best. He may not be the best 2000m horse around but you can rest assured he will be right in the thick of the action when the whips are cracking.

RACE 10

Not easy to make a pick here. Mr Crowe (11) lost no friends at his last start against better company. Will be right in the mix again. This is harder for Bandido (10). Scored last two wins in inferior grade. Still in good nick and pays to follow with his light handicap. Inside gate helps. US-bred Winning Cause (4) had every chance last time out but failed to quicken when required. Will be thereabouts. This looks slightly easier for Darci Charmer (2). Ran okay at his last outing. Can do better than that. Handy barrier.

RACE 11

Competitive race to cap an exciting Derby day. Magic City (5) will be hard to beat going with the way he fought off Chopin’s Fantaisie before getting narrowly beaten. Top pick even if he has drawn the extreme outside. Ignore Eclipse Splash’s (4) last run. He was caught deep throughout and was a spent force upon straightening. Drawn better this timeInclude in calculations. Moon Charm (10)flew home for second last time out when she was down in Class 5. Back in Class 4. Bit of an ask but not without a chance of taking home some prizemoney. Marine Treasure (2) has been a model of consistency this term. This looks a bit rich and the wide barrier does not help his cause, but he can still finish in the money. Back on turf over which he scored one of his two wins.
