Sunday meeting preview
16 Apr 2017 |
Sunday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.
The best sprinters in Singapore get their chance to shine at Group 1 Weight-for-Age level when the 2017 Lion City Cup is run and won on Sunday.
The $800,000 feature is now the jewel in the crown of Sprint racing at Kranji and the winner will have one hoof on the honour of joining the likes of four-time winner Rocket Man as the Singapore Sprint Champion.
EMPEROR MAX certainly deserves to add his name to the Lion City Cup honour roll.
The Stephen Gray-trained 7YO has finished runner up in this race an amazing three times – twice to ZAC SPIRIT and once to WAR AFFAIR – and gets his chance at the top of the ratings at the WFA conditions.
Ironically, it may be his stablemate in LIM’S CRUISER who denies him his Group 1 win.
The progressive 4YO won the Rocket Man Sprint when resuming after winning the EW Barker last November and while those wins were at handicap conditions, he is a horse with a huge future and wins this without surprising.
The other contenders are headed by the honest WIMBLEDON and last start winners STORM TROOPS and ALIBI while the NH 3YO, FORVER YOUNG, is worth thought with a 5kg pull at the weights.
Best Bets: (EMPEROR MAX race 9, win), (HYDE PARK race 2, each-way) and (MORITZ ECLIPSE race 8, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 8 (1, 2, 5 and 6), race 9 (1, 5, 7 and 8), race 10 (1, 2, 4, 7, 10 and 13) and race 11 (1, 5, 7 and 8).

Selections; 6 LITTLE BIG MAN - 1 AHMAR - 4 ZAC ACE - 7 SIAM GEMSTONE
Very little between a number of these at this class and distance. LITTLE BIG MAN has been racing soundly without winning in Class 4, the drop to an easier grade with Manoel Nunes staying aboard should help and he will be running on. AHMAR has been racing consistently in this class without being able to break through, he takes a claim again and this distance should suit. ZAC ACE won a Maiden well at this trip and his trials have been good, he is awkwardly drawn but should be prominent. SIAM GEMSTONE only battled when caught wide in Novice company last start, he is better suited here and can show up with Vlad Duric staying aboard. Amongst the other numerous chances, STORM TROOPER is slipping down in grade, ANCIENT WARRIOR struggled in Novice company last start but is better off here, HIGH COUNCIL fought on well last start and may find this distance more suitable while MR JACKSON finally broke through last start and could show up for Glen Boss.

Selections; 10 HYDE PARK - 1 JUSTICE LIGHT - 2 WINTERFELL - 3 SUPER TYCOON
A competitive Restricted Maiden with a number knocking on the door as well as some interesting debutants. JUSTICE LIGHT just missed last start and with Glen Boss taking over gets a chance to make amends. WINTERFELL has placed at four of seven starts and didn't miss by much when resuming; he should be prominent throughout. SUPER TYCOON has changed stables and the tongue-tie comes off, his recent trial was solid and he should be running on. COMMANDO ECLIPSE disappointed last start but blinkers go on and he could improve. Of the first starters HYDE PARK looked well held at his recent trial and looks a handy type. Likewise, MAGIC CITY trialled well and gets Manoel Nunes. The other first starters - THE ODDS and HOUSEBOAT HARRY - also look likely types.

No champions in this field but a few solid performers. MCGREGOR has been improved by recent racing and this distance suits, his last win was at this class and distance and he should be handy throughout with Michael Rodd to ride. MR CROWE is in good form and he should be running on and this distance may suit. DAMON has won twice at this trip and is suited in Class 4; the claim helps and he can be in the finish. GOLDEN PENINSULA improved over this trip last start and is recent trial was sound; he can show up with Manoel Nunes staying aboard. Stephen Gray also has a pair of decent chances. Selections; 3 POSEIDON - 1 BAHANA - 5 VIVIANO - 2 TWICKENHAM
Some smart ones resuming here - watch the market. POSEIDON found form last start and likes this trip, carries the same weight and Vlad Duric stays on; from the good gate he should be prominent throughout. VIVIANO has been in solid form and drops 3kg on last outing over this trip; he could be hard to hold off. TWICKENHAM is resuming with blinkers off, he has a good record at this distance and can race well fresh and his trial was fair; watch for support. BAHANA is the Singapore Gold Cup winner resuming,. He is a top middle distance performer who can sprint well fresh, the claim helps and he will be running on late. Down in the weights MR FANTASTIC and GOLDEN CURL can make their presence felt.

Selections; 1 OCEAN DE LAGO - 2 LIM'S ARCHER - 4 LIM'S ELUSIVE - 9 GOLAZO
Another open Class 4 over a mile. OCEAN DE LAGO has been racing well in this grade; he will appreciate a senior rider in Vlad Duric back on and should be in the finish. LIM'S ARCHER has not been far away at recent starts over this trip, this class suits and he should be in the finish for Michael Rodd. LIM'S ELUSIVE has been racing well but finding it hard to win, he is suited by this distance and should be running on. MR EXCHEQUER won a Maiden over this trip last start; this is harder but shows middle-distance promise and should be prominent. There are plenty of other chances including GOLAZO who ran on nicely over 1400m last start and is better suited by this distance.

Selections; 6 GILT COMPLEX - 5 PERFECT P - 8 SONG TO THE MOON - 4 TIME ODYSSEY
A strong field for the Moonbeam Vase should ensure a competitive race run at a solid tempo. PERFECT P is racing soundly and winkers replace blinkers, he has won both starts over this trip and should be prominent throughout. GILT COMPLEX is in top form and this distance suits, Michael Rodd gets on and he should be hard to hold off. MR SPIELBERG was narrowly beaten last start and is suited by this distance, he is relatively well weighted and should be running on. SONG TO THE MOON disappointed last start and the tongue-tie goes on; his previous form was strong and he has won at this distance. Selections; 5 SPECIAL FORCE - 2 CITY OF KIRKWALL - 4 PRECIOUS GEM - 3 JUSTICE GRACE
A Class 4 staying race of little depth. SPECIAL FORCE was run down last start over 2200m and will find this easier. No one rides these middle distance races better than Alan Munro and he should be prominent throughout. CITY OF KIRKWALL is a dour fellow suited by this Class and distance; with Vlad Duric to ride he should be handy throughout. PRECIOUS GEM has been racing soundly in this grade and has won up to 2200m; Manoel Nunes stays on and should get a good run throughout. The other main chances are two European imports. JUSTICE GRACE battled away solidly last start in higher grade; he is yet to win in Singapore but won over 2080m in UK before arrival and should be handy throughout. ARIF showed improvement last start, he won over 1609m before arrival at Dundalk on the all weather track and is bred to stay, he should appreciate this trip, watch for support.

4 PRECIOUS GEM *** Racing soundly in this grade and has won up to 2200m. Manoel Nunes stays on and should get a good run throughout. 5.00
5 SPECIAL FORCE *** Run down last start over 2200m and will find this easier. Gets Alan Munro and should be prominent throughout. 3.50
6 BLACK THUNDER * Battling since resuming. Could appreciate this distance but needs to improve. 20
7 GOOD DEAL * Caught wide last start but has been struggling at these distance trips. May need easier. 33
8 SUN SCRAPER * Battling since arrival in Singapore and this trip may test. 33

11 THREE LIONS * Tested against these. 50
Selections; 1 MORITZ ECLIPSE - 2 SOUTHERN DRAGON - 5 POWER LIN - 6 GOLD CROWN
A couple of horses that will find this Company to their liking in MORITZ ECLIPSE and POWER LIN are worth following back in Class 4. MORITZ ECLIPSE has been going OK in Class 3 and given his last win was this Class, trip and track, he can win with a handy 3kg claim. POWER LIN gets Nunes and after two solid runs "out of Class", he gets his chance and may be value. SOUTHERN DRAGON is the interesting runner. The 3YO was impressive winning at his first two starts but obviously something went amiss last start as the tongue-tie goes on and that could see him back to his best. Nothing else jumps off the page but GOLD CROWN is honest and showed last start while his best trip is 1400m, he could win this trip so keep safe.
1 MORITZ ECLIPSE *** Forget last start as he gets back to recent winning Class, track and trip. Can win. 5.00
2 SOUTHERN DRAGON *** Freshened after poor run but gets tongue-tie and happy to follow on top form prior and trial form. 5.00
3 LINCOLN'S EXCUSE ** Draw a concern but showed enough last start to keep safe. 13
4 FLASH ONE * A better option on the Poly. 33
5 POWER LIN *** Has been in solid form in better company than this and should give this a shake. 5.00
6 GOLD CROWN *** Better over 1400m but placed last start this trip with support so pay to follow. 4.00
7 ZIGG ZAG * Gets winkers but hard to have on Singapore debut run. 100
8 COUNTRY QUACK ** Mixing his form but maiden win this trip and track and could show up. 12
9 DEMOLITION * Resuming. Late Eclair Flash. Recent trial OK with market best guide. 20
10 EXCELLENT ONE * Needs to show more. 33
11 STAR INVINCIBLE ** Might need easier than this to win but should be competitive. 20
12 DICAPRIO ** Has been racing well at odds and worth an each way thought. 20
13 MINGS MAN ** Competitive at last two Class 4 runs over 1400m and pay to keep safe at odds. 20
14 MASTERMIND * Reassess on the Poly over shorter. 50
15 PROUD PINOY * Can go forward an run a cheeky race but will need easier. 50
16 MUSCULAR DRAGON ** Form better than it reads and could run into exotics at long odds. 50
Selections; 1 EMPEROR MAX - 7 LIM'S CRUISER - 8 ALIBI - 5 STORM TROOPS
An intriguing edition of the Lion City Cup with a few of the fancies yet to show their credentials at weight-for-age level and the best horse in the race - EMPEROR MAX - first up after finishing second in this race last year. That effort was after a trip to Royal Ascot so the 7YO does know how to race well first-up and like all top sprinters, does have to pick and choose his battles. And this is the best race for him on the domestic circuit and connections would have penciled in a win many months ago. His biggest test may come from his stablemate, LIM'S CRUISER. The EW Barker winner resumed with a win over this trip in the Rocket Man Sprint and while both were at handicap conditions, he is a rising star and can win this. Of the rest with winning hopes, ALIBI and STORM TROOPS both win too often not to be in the mix in what could be a thrilling finish.
1 EMPEROR MAX *** Resuming after finishing second in this race last year and good enough to go one better. 4.00
2 WIMBLEDON ** Honest and will run a big race from the ace. 10
3 BEST TOTHELIGN ** Resuming after Group Poly race over 1700m but has first-up form and could run into exotic calculations. 20
4 NOVA STRIKE ** All sorts of excuses last start and well worth another look with blinkers on. 12
5 STORM TROOPS *** Facing biggest test to date but in winning form and should go very close. 6.00
6 CAVALLO ** Will be doing best work late at good odds and always worth thought. 20
7 LIM'S CRUISER *** Rising star of Singapore racing and should be up to WFA conditions. Can win. 3.00
8 ALIBI *** Resumed with good win in easier Company but shown previously he can handle top opposition. 5.00
9 CYBORG ** Too honest to leave out but exotics best in this field. 33
10 HIP HIP HOORAY * Not suited at WFA conditions. 50
11 FOREVER YOUNG * Excuses in the 3YO Sprint and gets in with 52.5kg but this is a tough ask. 50
Selections; 13 LIM'S DASHING - 10 CAORUNN - 2 ELUSIVE EMPEROR - 4 NIGHT FLIGHT
A cracking Class 3 sprint with winning hopes at both ends of the rating scale. And with the likes of LIM'S DASHING and CAORUNN on 52 and 52.5kg respectively, the light weights get their chance. Both finished in the winning mix with ELUSIVE EMPEROR (who can obviously also win this) and both look very progressive types. At the top of the weights, FLAK JACKET is honest and must go close in this Company while there is plenty of winning form around NIGHT FLIGHT and DREAMWEAVER. PARLIAMENT could be on the improve at odds and go even wider in exotics.
1 FLAK JACKET *** Long time between wins but would have appreciated first up run and will be prominent throughout. 20
2 ELUSIVE EMPEROR *** Drawn wide but very honest and should figure at the business end. 7.00
3 VON KRUMM ** Solid without being a threat at two runs this campaign and exotics look best. 20
4 NIGHT FLIGHT *** Resuming with tongue-tie after back-to-back wins and has first-up form so worth a look. 5.00
5 DREAMWEAVER ** Up in Class and drawn wide but hard to fault winning form and will look the winner at some stage in straight. 12
6 LIGHTNING FAST * A better option on the Poly. 33
7 PARLIAMENT *** Should need further but drawn well and recent trial good enough to give this a shake. 20
8 SUPER LINE ** Always looks some show and could be each-way value. 12
9 ANONYMOUS ** Yet to win on the turf but will be doing best work late and can consider. 12
10 CAORUNN *** Has not run a bad race but yet to win in Singapore. Should race well again. 6.00
11 DRAGON SPIRIT * Prefer on the Poly. 100
12 IVANHOE ** Just fair on the Poly at Singapore debut and need to lift. 20
13 LIM'S DASHING *** Just missed when resuming in similar affair and can win this. 4.00
14 SENATOR ** Improved lengths at second start in Singapore and pay to keep safe. 20
15 LIM'S SPRINT * Better last start but easier to ignore. 100
Selections; 5 ZIPPY GENERAL - 1 HADES - 7 ROYAL DIWAN - 8 ELITE SILENCER
Not a lot of serious hopes in the lucky last on Lion City Cup day and it may even be a race in two for punters between HADES and ZIPPY GENERAL. Both horses went very close to winning at their respective last starts (Hades over 1400m) and both win this without improving much. ROYAL DIWAN also just missed when making his Singapore debut and he must be respected on that very good effort. What does make the race interesting is a newcomer from Australia in ELITE SILENCER. The 4YO only had two starts before arriving - winning one - and a solid local trial has him under notice with Rodd onboard from gate 1. You can almost put a line through the rest.
1 HADES *** Just missed last start over 1400m and drop back in trip could see a result. 3.00
2 KOLOMBIA * Disappointing with support at Singapore debut and may need longer than this. 33
3 CATCH ME GREAT * No. 100
4 EASTER MATE * Former UK galloper might need the run on exposed trial form. 50
5 ZIPPY GENERAL *** Just missed last start in similar affair with support and right in this. 3.00
6 FRAGRANCE EMPIRE * Flopped last start and have to take on trust. 33
7 ROYAL DIWAN *** Just missed on the Poly at Singapore debut and must be respected. 6.00
8 ELITE SILENCER *** Former Australian who has trialled OK locally and gets Rodd from gate 1. Market good guide. 4.50
9 URASHIMA TARO ** Resuming. Promising type who should have appreciated the break with market good guide. 20
10 THUNDER CAT * Reassess on the Poly in easier Company. 100
11 GOLDEN MILE * Blinkers off and needs easier on the Poly. 100
12 SUN EMPIRE * No. 200
13 MISS BLANCHETT ** Placed last start at long odds in similar affair and a must for exotics. 20
14 OCEAN GENERAL * Needs shorter on the poly. 50
15 DELFYNE * Blinkers off and looking for easier. 50
16 PRATT STREET ** Improved effort last start in good Company so can include in exotics at odds. 50
