It was an emotional moment at Ellerslie on Saturday when Queen Of Pop (3 B. F. Pins – Dame Mapperley, by Volksraad) took out the Canon Three-Year-Old over 1200-metres, a race in which jockeys wore black armbands in a mark of respect for the passing during week of Australian jockey Stathi Katsidis.
Katsidis was well known to the stable of Donna Logan, Dean Logan & Chris Gibbs, with the victory stirring memories for them of the sad loss.
“It was a pretty special win”, said Donna Logan. “We attribute this win to our friend Stathi Katisidis and I haven’t wanted to win one so badly for a long, long time.”
Rather than quickening sharply, Queen Of Pop sustained a dour finish in the straight after being camped on the pace, suggesting the mile journey of the 1000 Guineas should suit her nicely.
But, it seems at this stage while she holds a nomination for the group one fillies classic at Christchurch on November 13, a decision is still to be made on her accepting.
Chris Gibbs said, “She had to win today to warrant a trip down (to Christchurch), and while it’s still up in the air a little bit she’s certainly put her hand up, and her ability got her there today. She had to win today or be very unlucky, and she’s done that, so it’s a nice situation to be in.”
Donna Logan added, “We’re tossing up a trip to Christchurch. We’ve got quite a few options. There’s a lot here (Ellerslie) for her around Christmas time without a big trip and she’ll tell us how she pulls up over the next few days.”
Adding weight to the likelihood of Queen Of Pop appreciating more distance she is a half-sister to talented galloper Le Baron (Golan), winner of the group two Great Northern Guineas over 2100m on good ground at Ellerslie in 2008.
Both Queen Of Pop and Le Baron are owned by Dominic Li, racing under the banner of IDL Racing Ltd.
On good footing, Queen Of Pop ran the 1200m in 1:10.13, last 600m 35.08.
