Thompson mare's quinella at The Farm

Randwick trainer John Thompson scored a good quinella at The Farm on Wednesday with his two four-year-old mares Almerheri and Le Lude taking the $50,000, Winter Racing Bm64 Handicap (1600m) for three and four-year-old’s.

The Al Maher mare Almerheri won the race after narrowly missing last start over 1400m with 58kg under Rachael King at The Farm on July 31st. Nash Rawiller was recruited for Wednesday with the step up in distance looking ideal even with 59kg and so it proved.

Rawiller parked Almerheri in third as James McDonald bowled along in front with the well-supported Achondrite (59kg) who had been backed from $3.60 into $2.30 on Wednesday morning. Le Lude, with 55.5kg under King, led her stablemate in second.

Entering the main straight Achondrite had a length lead as McDonald tried to drop the others, but then the chasers lined up three abreast to challenge on the outside.

Almerheri came though best of all outside Achondrite on the rails with Le Lude (Lope de Vega) and King second, the margin 1/2L, with a neck to Achondrite (Lord Kanaloa) and a noticeably late closing Shaman (NZ) fourth.

The time was 1.36.61 on the Good 4 track with the final 600m in 34.59. Almerheri paid $3.60 on both fixed odds and the tote.

“She ran well here the other day and she was probably just a run short. She had a good run and started to manoeuvre through the other horses, but once she got clear running she put them away, it was good. Both horses are progressive and they will go through their grades,” said Thompson.

“She has a terrific turn of foot and she was very strong at the end of 1400m the other day when she did not get to show her turn of foot, but today she was right on the bunny and she quickened when the run came. I feel she can keep going on the back of that, she is a talented little mare,” said Rawiller.

Almerheri, out of the Street Cry mare Miss Cutie, was winning for the second time from 11 starts and with two thirds she has earned stakes of $76,660 for the ownership syndicate of Mr J V O'Neill, Mr R A Sheraton, Mr E Law, Mr B J Ball, Mr S J Thompson, Mr A C Beckmann, Mr P J O'Brien, Mrs B Hamilton, Ms D L Gordon, Mr M T Wright, Mr J A D Treloar, Mr B G Weeding, Mr N D Rance, Mr J W Orange, Mr A F May, Mr M Harris and Dr DS Karpin.
