Godolphin trainer James Cummings has opened up the tantalising prospect of the stable’s Group 1 Randwick Guineas winning colt Kementari taking on the worlds’ best turf horse Winx in the $1m, Group 1 WFA George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on the Longines Golden Slipper meeting, March 24th.
Cummings said on Sky Sports Radio on Wednesday that no decision has been made on the Lonhro colt running in the George Ryder Stakes with the primary aim now for Kementari the $3m, Group 1 The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 7th.
Kementari was dominate in the Randwick Guineas over 1600m last Saturday winning with 1 1/2L in hand over Pierata and Trapeze Artist and in race record time of 1.33.72. Racingandsports.com.au colleagues gave the win a Timeform rating of 125p, the highest ever winning figure of the Randwick Guineas.
All this was accomplished without rider Glyn Schofield having to extend the colt in the same manner as in each of the colt’s three wins this campaign.
Cummings did confirm that Kementaro will not extend out to the 2000m of the $600,000, Group 1 Sky Rosehill Guineas on the 24th.
The decision on running against Winx next week will be made in due course, but with 51.5kg for the Doncaster Mile, and off the back of his Randwick Guineas performance, the colt is currently the $4.00 favourite with TAB.com.au for the Doncaster Mile with Happy Clapper at $8.00.
