Race:1 (208) ASHLEY HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 (Restricted) 1400 m

KING DRAGON began only fairly.
CHATER KING shifted out at the start and bumped RICH AND LUCKY.
LEAP OF FAITH was slow to begin, then shifted out and was checked away from the heels of KA YING EXCELLENT.
Shortly after the start, LUCKY MISSILE and SKY DARCI bumped.
From wide barriers, KA YING EXCELLENT, MOMENTUM HAPPY and U W BROTHER were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages to obtain cover.
KING DRAGON travelled keenly passing the 1200 Metres.
Passing the 1100 Metres, INVALUABLE was awkwardly placed inside the hindquarters of LEAP OF FAITH which got its head on the side and lay in.
In the early stages, CHATER KING travelled wide and without cover and making the turn near the 900 Metres commenced to lay out. CHATER KING then hung out after the 800 Metres, proved difficult to ride and subsequently finished tailed out. A veterinary inspection of CHATER KING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The racing manners and performance of CHATER KING were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CHATER KING will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When CHATER KING lay out, KELMIMI WINS was left racing wide and without cover near the 700 Metres.
At the entrance to the Straight, SKY DARCI was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GALA NIGHT when being shifted to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running.
Passing the 400 Metres, APOLAR WARRIOR was initially shifted out away from the heels of UNITED WE STAND after being disappointed for running to the inside of that horse. Approaching the 300 Metres, APOLAR WARRIOR was then directed to the inside of UNITED WE STAND and raced tight inside that horse passing the 300 Metres when improving into tight running. APOLAR WARRIOR then continued to race tight inside UNITED WE STAND until after the 200 Metres.
Mr T P Yung, the trainer of MOMENTUM HAPPY, was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse which was reluctant to proceed to the barriers. Mr Yung was advised that should MOMENTUM HAPPY offend again, having regard that this was the second time that the horse had been reluctant to proceed to the Start, further action may be taken.
When questioned, K C Leung (MOMENTUM HAPPY) stated that at the entrance to the Straight he shifted his mount out to improve into running which was available between KING DRAGON and GALA NIGHT. He said after the 400 Metres MOMENTUM HAPPY got its head on the side and lay out away from KING DRAGON and was reluctant to improve into running which remained available between those horses. He said, despite riding MOMENTUM HAPPY forward to improve into the run, the horse continued to be reluctant to proceed and continued to lay out towards the heels of GALA NIGHT. He said near the 300 Metres he stopped riding MOMENTUM HAPPY as he was aware that GALA NIGHT was being ridden out with the whip in the left hand and KING DRAGON at this time was shifting out to obtain clear running. He added this resulted in MOMENTUM HAPPY racing in restricted room between GALA NIGHT and KING DRAGON and not being able to be tested after the 300 Metres. He said as he felt that the gap between KING DRAGON and GALA NIGHT would close, he commenced to steady MOMENTUM HAPPY with a view to shifting the horse to the outside of GALA NIGHT as he was still inside the heels of that horse. He said passing the 250 Metres the gap between KING DRAGON and GALA NIGHT opened up somewhat and he again rode his mount to take advantage of the run, however, KING DRAGON shifted out which resulted in the run closing and him directing MOMENTUM HAPPY to the outside of GALA NIGHT to obtain clear running.
LEAP OF FAITH, SKY DARCI and RICH AND LUCKY were sent for sampling.

Race:2 (209) CAMERON HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1650 m

Passing the winning post on the first occasion, KEEP WINNING was awkwardly placed close to the heels of WINNING CIRCLE when being steadied to obtain cover behind that horse.
In the early stages, THE FULL BLOOM was left racing very wide and without cover.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, MCMUNIGAL lost ground when crowded for room between KEEP WINNING which shifted out marginally when awkwardly placed close to the heels of WINNING CIRCLE and MR MAGELLAN which, after initially being directed in by THE FULL BLOOM (T H So), then shifted in away from that horse which was directed out to relieve the tightening to horses on his inside. T H So was advised that whilst there were some circumstances to this incident, nonetheless he did initially direct MR MAGELLAN in and accordingly, he was reprimanded and told to exercise more care in similar circumstances. After THE FULL BLOOM was shifted out to relieve the pressure to MR MAGELLAN, MASTER BERNINI shifted to the inside of THE FULL BLOOM. Then passing the 1400 Metres, MCMUNIGAL raced tight between MI BLANCO and MASTER BERNINI which, when improving to the inside of THE FULL BLOOM, raced tight inside that horse. THE FULL BLOOM was then left racing very wide and after the 1200 Metres was allowed to improve its position but continued to race wide and without cover.
MR MAGELLAN travelled wide and without cover until near the 1100 Metres.
After the 200 Metres, JOYFUL CONTENDER went amiss and was retired out of the race. The Veterinary Officer subsequently reported that JOYFUL CONTENDER had sustained an injury to the left front leg.
After the race, R Bayliss expressed concern regarding the action of NATURAL FLARE. A veterinary inspection of NATURAL FLARE immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, NATURAL FLARE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned regarding his riding of PEACE ON EARTH rounding the Home Turn, H W Lai stated that he commenced to ride his mount along after the 700 Metres to have it improve its position. He said PEACE ON EARTH was reluctant to improve at this stage and he felt that the horse may have been resenting the kickback. He said he continued to push his mount along rounding the Home Turn and at the 400 Metres commenced to shift to the outside of MCMUNIGAL to improve its position. He said as he was commencing to improve to that horse’s outside, MCMUNIGAL shifted out under pressure, resulting in PEACE ON EARTH being awkwardly placed outside the heels of MCMUNIGAL. H W Lai was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, he must ensure that he makes every endeavour to have his mounts improve their position at vital stages of the race.
MR MAGELLAN, MEGATRON and MASTER BERNINI were sent for sampling.

Race:3 (210) CARNARVON HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

COPARTNER ERA made the turn near the 900 Metres awkwardly.
After the 900 Metres, MAJESTIC CONQUEROR commenced to travel keenly and was awkwardly placed behind MIGHTY VALOR. MAJESTIC CONQUEROR continued to travel keenly and near the 700 Metres was shifted out away from the heels of MIGHTY VALOR. When MAJESTIC CONQUEROR shifted back in to resume its position near the 600 Metres, HERO STAR raced tight inside the heels of that horse.
Approaching the 600 Metres, BRILLIANT PROFIT got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of BETTER CHOICE.
After the 500 Metres, MAJESTIC CONQUEROR was shifted out away from the heels of THE ABRAXAS (H N Wong) which shifted to the outside of MIGHTY VALOR to improve. HERO STAR and CALIFORNIA RAD were inconvenienced in consequence. H N Wong was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Over the concluding stages, K C Leung’s (BRILLIANT PROFIT) whip became entangled in the mane when being pulled through into the right hand.
A veterinary inspection of MAJESTIC CONQUEROR immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
QUADRUPLE DOUBLE and THE ABRAXAS were sent for sampling.

Race:4 (211) HANKOW HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1200 m

A veterinary inspection of KING MORTAR immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils.
Making the turn after the 700 Metres, ISLAND WINNER got its head on the side and lay out.
Near the 550 Metres, EXPONENTS was awkwardly placed close to the heels of CORRE RAPIDO.

EXPONENTS was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and near the 300 Metres was steadied away from the heels of CORRE RAPIDO. EXPONENTS was then shifted to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running.
Close to the finishing line, the whip of A Sanna (ISLAND WINNER) was knocked from his grasp by the whip of J Moreira (EXPONENTS).
N Callan (SUREWIN) was spoken to regarding raising his whip arm above the height of his shoulder. He was reminded this was the second occasion in recent times that the Stewards had to speak to him regarding this matter.
A veterinary inspection of CORRE RAPIDO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
EXPONENTS, STRIKING MR C and RUN MOOCHI were sent for sampling.

Race:5 (212) THE CHINESE GENERAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CUP (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 4 1800 m

A veterinary examination of AURORA STAR, which became fractious when proceeding to the saddling area and momentarily got down, found that horse to be suitable to race.
When proceeding to the barriers, N Callan was dislodged from SUPREME PATROL without incident. SUPREME PATROL was quickly recaptured and on arrival at the Start was found to be suitable to race by the Veterinary Officer.
SHIMMER AND SHINE began awkwardly and lost ground.
STRATHCLYDE shifted out at the start and bumped SUPREME PATROL. STRATHCLYDE then became unbalanced after being bumped by BREEZE OF SPRING which shifted out. When questioned, S de Sousa stated that it was intended for STRATHCLYDE to be ridden in a prominent position. He said after being bumped at the start, he rode his mount along for some distance, however, STRATHCLYDE did not show any early speed. He said, despite being ridden positively in the early stages and particularly passing the 1000 Metres, STRATHCLYDE did not respond to his riding and was unable to take up a forward position and consequently raced much further back in the field than had been intended. He added when racing back in the field, STRATHCLYDE did not travel comfortably at any stage of the race and in the Straight did not quicken and was very disappointing. A veterinary inspection of STRATHCLYDE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
HAPPY HAPPY STAR lost its right front plate at the start.
Making the first turn near the 700 Metres, ZERO HEDGE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SHIMMER AND SHINE.
Throughout the race, HAPPY HAPPY STAR travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, B Shinn stated that it was intended for ZERO HEDGE, from the outside barrier, to be ridden in a forward position. He said ZERO HEDGE, which got its head down in the barriers prior to the start, began very awkwardly and lost ground and therefore he was obliged to ride the horse from the rear of the field.
A veterinary inspection of SHIMMER AND SHINE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
FORTUNE HAPPINESS and STAR SUPERIOR were sent for sampling.

Race:7 (214) THE PENINSULA GOLDEN JUBILEE CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 3 1000 m

HEALTHY LUCK lost ground when crowded for room on jumping between MASSIVE POCKET and COMFORT LIFE which began awkwardly and shifted out. In this incident, MASSIVE POCKET became unbalanced when bumped on the hindquarters by HEALTHY LUCK.

FLYING SWORD began awkwardly.
Near the 950 Metres, ALLIED AGILITY got its head up on a number of occasions when travelling keenly.

Near the 250 Metres, SUPER JUNIOR raced tight inside GLENEALY GENERALS which shifted in.
Passing the 100 Metres, CALIFORNIA GUNGHO was shifted to the outside of ALLIED AGILITY after being disappointed for running between that horse and HEALTHY LUCK. GLENEALY GENERALS, which was following CALIFORNIA GUNGHO and SUPER JUNIOR, was inconvenienced in consequence.
A Badel stated that when riding out GLENEALY GENERALS, he was always aware that SUPER JUNIOR was awkwardly placed to his inside. He said after the 300 Metres CALIFORNIA GUNGHO was starting to shift ground to the outside of GLENEALY GENERALS and as GLENEALY GENERALS was closing off the race well when ridden hands and heels, he elected not to use the whip on the horse due to GLENEALY GENERALS not being in sufficiently clear ground and having a number of runners racing around his mount at that time. He added, irrespective of this, he believed that GLENEALY GENERALS was finishing off the race well and he did not believe that the whip being used on the horse would aid it over the concluding stages.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SUPER JUNIOR, K C Leung stated that after racing tight between runners near the 800 Metres, his mount came off the bridle and then after this did not travel as it had at its recent starts when ridden by him. He said whilst SUPER JUNIOR always makes a type of an abnormal breathing noise in its races, he felt that today the horse’s breathing was more noticeable than it had been previously and this may explain why SUPER JUNIOR did not finish off its race. A veterinary inspection of SUPER JUNIOR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of SUPER JUNIOR, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER JUNIOR will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
DUKE WAI and STRONGER were sent for sampling.

Race:10 (217) SALISBURY HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1400 m

ASSIMILATE began awkwardly and then was bumped by EVERYONE’S JOY which shifted in after being bumped by GREAT TREASURE.
HAPPY FORCE shifted out at the start and bumped EZRA which was then shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of ULTIMATE GLORY.
Shortly after the start, FEARLESS FIRE and INVINCIBLE MISSILE lost ground when crowded for room between TANG FLEMING which shifted in marginally and MONEY BACK which got its head on the side and shifted out and then shifted out further after receiving contact on the hindquarters by FEARLESS FIRE. After this, FEARLESS FIRE (M F Poon) and INVINCIBLE MISSILE were steadied and shifted across behind runners in an endeavour to obtain cover. M F Poon reported that when shifting out away from the heels of MONEY BACK near the 1200 Metres, FEARLESS FIRE commenced to travel very keenly and was then left racing without cover and having regard to the manner in which the horse was travelling, he then allowed FEARLESS FIRE to improve its position around HONEST WAY after the 1000 Metres, however, FEARLESS FIRE continued to travel wide and without cover.
Making the turn after the 700 Metres, ASSIMILATE got it head on the side and lay out and near the 650 Metres was momentarily awkwardly placed inside the heels of FALCON TURBO.
Approaching the 200 Metres, ASSIMILATE was shifted out away from the heels of TANG FLEMING to continue improving.
When questioned, H N Wong explained that he was asked to obtain a forward position on TANG FLEMING and sit outside the likely leader HAPPY FORCE. He said, from the outside barrier, he allowed his mount to improve gradually into a forward position and after the 1100 Metres commenced to proceed forward of HELLO BEAUTY to cross that horse. He said in order to cross HELLO BEAUTY, he had to allow his mount to stride forward and when crossing that horse near the 1000 Metres was left racing in advance of HAPPY FORCE which was racing on the rail. He said as it was apparent to him that HAPPY FORCE would continue to maintain the lead, he immediately commenced to steady his mount with a view to racing directly to that horse’s outside. He said however that TANG FLEMING travelled keenly in the lead and he would have had to break that horse’s stride in order to have it race on terms with HAPPY FORCE and therefore TANG FLEMING raced in advance of that horse and to its outside.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of EZRA, S de Sousa stated that after being bumped at the start he rode his mount along in an endeavour to take up a midfield position. He said after the 1300 Metres he was left racing in a three wide position outside EVERYONE’S JOY and therefore he attempted to steady EZRA to take a trailing position behind that horse. He said passing the 1100 Metres he had to shift EZRA out away from the heels of EVERYONE’S JOY as that horse shifted out away from the heels of FALCON TURBO. He said after this he remained racing in a three wide position with ULTIMATE GLORY improving to his inside and he attempted to shift that horse onto the rail to obtain the one-off position. He added after racing tight outside ULTIMATE GLORY approaching the 900 Metres, he continued to race three wide as ULTIMATE GLORY maintained its position behind EVERYONE’S JOY. He said he was therefore obliged to come back further to obtain a trailing position behind ULTIMATE GLORY one horse off the rail. He added when racing back in the field EZRA did not travel well and after being placed under pressure rounding the Home Turn and in the Straight EZRA then finished off the race only one-paced. A veterinary inspection of EZRA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of INVINCIBLE MISSILE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
EZRA, FOLLOW ME and ULTIMATE GLORY were sent for sampling.

General

1. 20 November 2019 Happy Valley Racemeeting – Race 9 (188)

The Stewards today interviewed K Teetan regarding the poor performance of HAPPY TIME. He said he was given two sets of instructions on how HAPPY TIME should be ridden, the first being to obtain a forward position if the horse began well. He said however that if HAPPY TIME was slow to begin as it had done in some of its previous races, he was told to ride the horse quietly. He said it was anticipated that WINNING METHOD, which was drawn directly inside of HAPPY TIME, would take up a forward position and that if HAPPY TIME began well he would follow that horse across to obtain a forward position. He said HAPPY TIME began satisfactorily and therefore he elected to commit to obtain a forward position. He said HAPPY TIME began better than WINNING METHOD and he attempted to cross that horse in the early stages, however, WINNING METHOD remained racing inside the hindquarters of HAPPY TIME. He said making the turn after the 1100 Metres HAPPY TIME was racing very wide, however, by this time he had committed to going forward and it was not a reasonable option for him to steady HAPPY TIME in an attempt to obtain cover. He said he therefore had to continue to press forward and it was not until after the 700 Metres that he was able to shift across to race into a position closer to the inside rail. He said because it took so long to obtain a forward position he was then not able to give HAPPY TIME a breather during the middle stages and HAPPY TIME then came under pressure prior to the 400 Metres and weakened in the Straight. He added, in his opinion, the performance of the horse could be solely attributable to the amount of use that he had to make of HAPPY TIME in the early and middle stages.
