Race: 1 (409)BONHAM HANDICAPClass 41000 m
TRAVEL DATUK was withdrawn on 9.2.18 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MAGIC AGILITY (Apprentice H T Mo). Before being allowed to race again, TRAVEL DATUK will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
On arrival at the Start, THOU SHALL SING had its right front plate refitted. THOU SHALL SING was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
LUCKY BABY and THOU SHALL SING began only fairly.
VERY SWEET ORANGE was crowded for room on jumping between REFINED TREASURE which began awkwardly and shifted in and GOKO which shifted out abruptly.
CHAPARRAL STAR was slow to begin.
After the 500 Metres, GOLDEN DASH got its head on the side and lay in.
After the race, P-C Boudot was dislodged from STELLAR FEELING without incident.
When questioned, P-C Boudot (STELLAR FEELING) stated that his mount, which was having its first race start today, was very fractious in the barriers and got its head down just prior to the start being effected. He said as the start was effected STELLAR FEELING kicked out behind and because of this was very slow to begin. He said when STELLAR FEELING did exit the barriers, the horse again got its head up and because of all these factors it lost a considerable amount of ground at the start. He said he rode his mount along at the 500 Metres to try and have the horse improve its position, however, STELLAR FEELING was racing greenly and did not respond to his riding. He said he balanced up the horse after this and then again commenced to ride it along after the 300 Metres. He added whilst STELLAR FEELING made up some ground, the horse continued to race greenly until over the concluding stages at which time it got its head on the side and lay out under pressure. The barrier manners of STELLAR FEELING were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, STELLAR FEELING will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
A veterinary inspection of VERY SWEET ORANGE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GOLDEN DASH, REFINED TREASURE and GOKO were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (410)DUNDAS HANDICAPClass 31650 m
STAR OF YAN OI began only fairly.
TANG FLEMING shifted out at the start and hampered GOODHEART SUCCESS.
ULTIMATE GLORY shifted out at the start and bumped TRAVEL FIRST which became unbalanced. After this, TRAVEL FIRST was vigorously ridden, however, failed to muster speed.
From the outside barrier, RIGHTEOUS MATE was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
At the entrance to the Straight, NUCLEAR POWER was awkwardly placed inside the heels of ULTIMATE GLORY.
Near the 100 Metres, GOODHEART SUCCESS was shifted to the outside of EXPERTO CREDE after being held up for clear running behind that horse.
Passing the 100 Metres, BANK ON RED was shifted to the outside of TRAVEL FIRST after being disappointed for running between that horse, which had its head on the side and was laying in, and NUCLEAR POWER (Apprentice M F Poon) which shifted out under pressure. Apprentice Poon was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out.
Approaching the 50 Metres, ULTIMATE GLORY was momentarily steadied away from the heels of TANG FLEMING (Apprentice H T Mo) which shifted out under pressure. Apprentice Mo was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes every endeavour to keep his mounts straight.
When questioned, N Rawiller (GONNA RUN) stated that passing the 1000 Metres his mount came under heavy pressure and he was obliged to ride it vigorously after the 900 Metres in order to maintain its position behind BANK ON RED. He said at this time GONNA RUN got its head on the side and lay in and, despite being ridden along, he was unable to prevent TRAVEL FIRST, which was racing to his outside, from shifting in. He said he had a number of looks down at GONNA RUN to ensure that there was nothing amiss with the horse as it had come off the bridle noticeably at this time. He said it was not until making the turn after the 700 Metres that GONNA RUN commenced to travel more comfortably and then for the remainder of the race did not present him with any concerns. A veterinary inspection of GONNA RUN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of STAR OF YAN OI immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. As this was the second occasion since November 2017 that STAR OF YAN OI had finished tailed out in its races, the Stewards ruled that the horse must undergo a series of satisfactory consecutive barrier trials and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
ULTIMATE GLORY, TANG FLEMING and TRAVEL FIRST were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (411)PITT HANDICAPClass 31600 m
EVEREST was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore). Before being allowed to race again, EVEREST will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
BULLISH GLORY and HO HO FEEL were steadied at the start and shifted across behind runners.
Approaching and passing the 1400 Metres, GENERAL DINO travelled keenly when being steadied to obtain cover.
DIAMOND DRAGON travelled keenly in the middle stages.
Approaching the 700 Metres, KIRAM shifted away from the heels of GENERAL DINO after being awkwardly placed behind that horse. After this, KIRAM was left racing wide and without cover and then approaching the 600 Metres was taken wider still when GENERAL DINO shifted out from behind GOLDEN SUN.
Approaching the 500 Metres, BULLISH GLORY was shifted out away from the heels of SMILING PRIDE which shifted out.
Passing the 500 Metres, CALCULATION shifted out and brushed the hindquarters of KIRAM. CALCULATION then became unbalanced and shifted in and in doing so made contact with DIAMOND DRAGON which became badly unbalanced and shifted in, inconveniencing HO HO FEEL.
At the entrance to the Straight, CALCULATION again shifted out and brushed KIRAM.
When questioned, J Moreira (CALCULATION) stated that after being placed in the barriers his mount stood well until just prior to the start being effected at which time the horse became nervous. He said then, as the start was effected, CALCULATION sat back and then bounded in the air before stumbling on landing. He said this resulted in the horse losing a considerable amount of ground and being required to race back in the field which is contrary to the horse’s usual racing pattern. He said because CALCULATION was so far back in the field, it was not available to him then to try to obtain a more forward position and consequently he shifted CALCULATION across to race on the rail. He said in the middle stages CALCULATION would not settle and got its head up on a number of occasions. He said making the turn near the 900 Metres CALCULATION was checked away from the heels of DIAMOND DRAGON and then passing the 800 Metres got its head up when again proving very difficult to settle and having to check away from the heels of DIAMOND DRAGON. He said because of the racing manners of CALCULATION he shifted the horse away from behind DIAMOND DRAGON approaching the 700 Metres. He said after racing tight between DIAMOND DRAGON and KIRAM rounding the Home Turn, he was able to shift CALCULATION to the outside of GENERAL DINO, however, CALCULATION immediately got its head on the side and lay in behind that horse. He added for the remainder of the race, despite his efforts, CALCULATION continued to lay in, resulting in the horse being awkwardly placed outside the heels of GENERAL DINO and proving difficult to properly test. A veterinary inspection of CALCULATION immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The barrier and racing manners of CALCULATION, favourite for today’s race, were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CALCULATION will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
CALCULATION, AGREE and DIAMOND DRAGON were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (412)PO YEE HANDICAPClass 41200 m
GOLDIE FLANKER was slow to begin.
LOOK ERAS began only fairly.
From the outside barriers, DRAGON WARRIOR and GOLDEN EFFORT were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Mr C S Shum, the trainer of GOLDEN EFFORT, stated that it had been decided to ride the horse more conservatively given its outside barrier and the race was expected to be run at a fast tempo. He said it was hoped that by riding GOLDEN EFFORT more conservatively, it may allow the horse to finish off its race stronger than it had been at its recent starts.
ELITE SPIRIT was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
Despite being hard ridden in the early stages, MASSIVE MOVE, which began only fairly, failed to muster speed.
Passing the 250 Metres, GOLDIE FLANKER was awkwardly placed behind ELITE SPIRIT when being shifted to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running to the outside of horses.
In the Straight, ELITE BOY raced with its head on the side and lay in under pressure, resulting in its rider, T Berry, having to stop riding and correct his mount on a number of occasions.
Throughout the race, STARTLING POWER travelled wide and without cover.
A veterinary inspection of LUCKY MASTER and LOOK ERAS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of AMAZING RACE immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, AMAZING RACE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
GOLDIE FLANKER, STARTLING POWER and ELITE BOY were sent for sampling.

Race: 5 (413)THE TUNG WAH GROUP OF HOSPITALS CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP)Class 41400 m

AMBITIOUS HEART shifted out at the start and bumped CELESTIAL NOVA.
ROOKIE STAR was tightened for room on jumping between EMPIRE STAR which shifted in and TRIUMPHAL TRUMPET which got its head up and shifted out abruptly. After this, from a wide barrier, ROOKIE STAR was steadied to obtain cover whilst EMPIRE STAR was ridden along, however, after a short distance when racing wide was shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
From the outside barrier, RAY’S CALL was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Despite being hard ridden in the early stages, UNIQUE JOYFUL was slow to muster speed and consequently travelled wide and without cover throughout the race.

Passing the 1200 Metres, SEA PEARL was awkwardly placed inside the heels of PLANET STAR.
Passing the 500 Metres, KIWI SUNRISE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ROCKET GO when racing tight inside LUCKY TIME which was racing close to the heels of SEA PEARL.
CELESTIAL NOVA lay out rounding the Home Turn.
Approaching the 350 Metres, KIWI SUNRISE was steadied away from the heels of LUCKY TIME when disappointed for running between that horse and ROCKET GO which was commencing to give ground.
Passing the 350 Metres, CELESTIAL NOVA and PLANET STAR raced tight.
Also passing the 350 Metres. NOBLE DE LOVE had some difficulty obtaining clear running.
After initially shifting out away from CHARITY KINGDOM, ROOKIE STAR was steadied when crowded for room near the 250 Metres between CHARITY KINGDOM and TRIUMPHAL TRUMPET (A Sanna) which shifted in. A Sanna was advised to exercise more care.
Near the 50 Metres, CHARITY KINGDOM raced tight between UNIQUE JOYFUL and SEA PEARL which shifted out.
When questioned regarding PLANET STAR being ridden in a forward position, Trainer P O’Sullivan stated that at its last start when stepping up to 1650 Metres for the first time, he was keen to ensure that the horse did not over race so as to provide it with the best opportunity to finish off its race. He said the horse had previously raced over 1200 Metres and he was concerned that with the step up in distance to 1650 Metres, were the horse to be ridden along in the early stages to take up a forward position, it may then not settle and consequently would not be able to finish off its race. He said at its only other start over 1400 Metres last season, PLANET STAR had been ridden in a forward position, however, prior to today’s race, he still considered that the horse would be better suited by being ridden back in the field. He said however in pre-race discussions with K C Leung, the rider of PLANET STAR, it was felt that it was likely that today’s race would not be run at a fast tempo and therefore there was an opportunity for PLANET STAR to again be ridden forward to overcome its awkward barrier. Mr O’Sullivan did however reiterate that the manner in which the horse was ridden today was similar to the manner in which it was ridden at its only other start over the course and distance.
PLANET STAR and LUCKY TIME were sent for sampling.

Race: 6 (414)SHATIN PASS HANDICAPClass 41650 m

COME ON WONGCHOY began awkwardly and lost ground.
SEMPITERNAL and TORNEY bumped at the start. After this, when being ridden along in an attempt to take up a forward position, SEMPITERNAL became unbalanced when bumped by DIAMOND FRIENDS which shifted in. After this, SEMPITERNAL continued to be hard ridden, however, failed to muster speed and raced back in the field.
From a wide barrier, SMART CHARADE was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
SPICY KAKA was steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
ELUSIVE STATE made the first turn awkwardly and after this was inclined to race with its head on the side and lay out. Then near the 1300 Metres, ELUSIVE STATE, after being crossed by SUNSHINE UNIVERSE, momentarily got its head up when awkwardly placed behind that horse.
After the 1200 Metres, MI BLANCO and TORNEY were left racing wide and without cover.
DASHING DART was badly held up for clear running from approaching the 200 Metres until after passing the 100 Metres.
The performance of SMART CHARADE, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SMART CHARADE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of SPICY KAKA immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea and also found the horse to be lame in its right front leg. Passing the 300 Metres, MERRYGOWIN momentarily raced tight inside GOD OF DRAGON which shifted in when racing tight inside ENERGETIC CLASS.
When questioned, N Rawiller stated that DYNAMIC EAGLE, which was only having its second race start in Hong Kong today, made the Home Turn awkwardly when ROYAL MOJITO, which was racing to its inside, shifted out to obtain clear running. He said he ensured that DYNAMIC EAGLE was properly balanced in the early part of the Straight whilst slapping the horse down the shoulder with the whip in the right hand. He said he commenced using the whip on the horse near the 250 Metres and DYNAMIC EAGLE closed off the race well.
A veterinary inspection of DARING FIT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
APOLLO’S CHOICE and ROYAL MOJITO were sent for sampling.

Race: 9 (417)WATERLOO HANDICAPClass 31200 m

UGLY WARRIOR shifted in at the start and bumped SHANGHAI MASTER.
WAYFOONG VINNIE was crowded for room shortly after the start between SHANGHAI MASTER and GIDDY GIDDY which shifted out.
After the 800 Metres, SAUL’S SPECIAL and STRATHCLYDE raced tight.
Making the turn approaching the 700 Metres, CHUNG WAH SPIRIT got its head on the side and lay out, resulting in SHANGHAI MASTER being taken out onto JOYFUL MOMENTS which became unbalanced and shifted out onto SMART DECLARATION which was bumped and taken wider before being steadied to obtain a trailing position. After this, CHUNG WAH SPIRIT continued to hang out, resulting in SHANGHAI MASTER racing in restricted room inside JOYFUL MOMENTS.
Passing the 250 Metres, WINNING VANGOGH got its head on the side and shifted out under pressure.
Throughout the race, SHANGHAI MASTER and JOYFUL MOMENTS travelled wide and without cover.
For the majority of the race, GIDDY GIDDY travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, Apprentice M F Poon stated that he was asked to ride PHANTOM FALCON, which was having its first start on the All Weather surface today, in a forward position. He said he was not given specific instructions to lead the race, however, if it was possible for the horse to lead the race comfortably, then he should ride PHANTOM FALCON accordingly. He said after beginning only fairly he rode his mount along for some distance in the early stages to obtain a forward position and it was not until approaching the 1000 Metres that he was able to establish the lead inside WINNING VANGOGH. He said he then steadied his mount to provide the horse with the opportunity to travel in the middle stages having in mind that he had already asked the horse for some effort in the early stages to overcome a poor start. He said after the 800 Metres he became aware that UGLY WARRIOR was being ridden along to obtain the lead, however, he was reluctant to ride his mount along at this stage to prevent UGLY WARRIOR from crossing PHANTOM FALCON as he had already made use of his horse in the early stages before steadying PHANTOM FALCON. He added he believed that again asking PHANTOM FALCON for another effort mid-race would be to be detriment of the horse. He said although the sectionals of the race at this time indicated that the race was not being run at a quick tempo, he did feel that at the time the race was being run strongly and he did not believe that it would be of benefit to PHANTOM FALCON if he rode his mount along at this time in an endeavour to prevent UGLY WARRIOR from crossing. Mr L Ho, the trainer of PHANTOM FALCON, confirmed that as the horse was racing on the All Weather surface for the first time today, he was uncertain as to whether the horse would have sufficient speed to lead the race, therefore he did not bind Apprentice Poon to any specific instructions to lead, rather he asked Apprentice Poon to obtain a forward positon and then it was at the judgement of Apprentice Poon as to whether he led the race or took a trailing position. He added having regard to the previous racing patterns of WINNING VANGOGH and UGLY WARRIOR over the course and distance, he felt that it was more likely that those horses may show more speed than PHANTOM FALCON and that PHANTOM FALCON may be required to take a trailing position behind those horses. He said having this in mind he was satisfied with Apprentice Poon’s handling of PHANTOM FALCON in today’s race.
When questioned, Apprentice H T Mo stated that he was asked to obtain a forward position on WINNING VANGOGH. He said at its most recent start WINNING VANGOGH had made the turn after the 700 Metres awkwardly, got its head on the side and lay out and he was therefore mindful of this when riding WINNING VANGOGH in the race. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode WINNING VANGOGH along in the early stages and was able to obtain a forward position outside the early leader of the race PHANTOM FALCON. He said when he became aware of UGLY WARRIOR improving its position around WINNING VANGOGH, he allowed that horse to cross WINNING VANGOGH as he did not want to ride his mount along and therefore have it make the first turn awkwardly. He said he felt that it was a better option for WINNING VANGOGH to be steadied and allow UGLY WARRIOR to cross rather than ride his mount along to maintain its position between UGLY WARRIOR and PHANTOM FALCON. Mr C S Shum, the trainer of WINNING VANGOGH, informed the Stewards that he had instructed Apprentice Mo to lead the race if possible, but if the tempo of the race was strong, it was acceptable for him to sit outside the leader of the race. He said he was disappointed in Apprentice Mo’s riding of WINNING VANGOGH in that, in his opinion, he should have made more of an attempt to remain racing in the lead rather than allowing UGLY WARRIOR to cross WINNING VANGOGH approaching the 700 Metres. Apprentice Mo was severely reprimanded regarding his riding of WINNING VANGOGH in the early and middle stages. He was advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, he did not make sufficient effort to comply with his instructions from Mr Shum to lead the race given the tempo of the race in the early and middle stages was not strong. Apprentice Mo was further advised that he must ride his mounts with sufficient judgement to ensure that he complies with his instructions wherever appropriate circumstances exist.
After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on WINNING VANGOGH at the request of Trainer C S Shum. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, WINNING VANGOGH will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of CHUNG WAH SPIRIT and GIDDY GIDDY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
STRATHCLYDE, UGLY WARRIOR and WINNING VANGOGH were sent for sampling.

Race: 10 (418)PO YAN HANDICAPClass 21200 m
Whilst in the saddling stalls, FABULOUS ONE had its left front plate refitted. FABULOUS ONE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
Just prior to the start being effected, WONDERFUL JOURNEY became fractious and then as the start was effected was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start, HOUSE OF FUN and MOMENTUM LUCKY raced tight between PERPETUAL JOYANCE and FABULOUS ONE, both of which shifted ground.

From wide barriers, KEY WITNESS and JOLLY JOLLY were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
In the early stages, FABULOUS ONE travelled wide and without cover and after the 800 Metres was steadied to obtain a trailing position.
Approaching the 300 Metres, FABULOUS ONE was steadied away from the heels of MARVEL TRIBE (M L Yeung) which shifted out when not quite clear. M L Yeung was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Also approaching the 300 Metres, SEVEN HEAVENS was steadied away from the heels of PERPETUAL JOYANCE (O Doleuze) which shifted out when not clear. O Doleuze was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Passing the 300 Metres, PERPETUAL JOYANCE, after being shifted out, got its head on the side and shifted out further, resulting in MOMENTUM LUCKY being inconvenienced.
Passing the 150 Metres, JOLLY JOLLY, which was finishing off the race strongly, was directed out away from the heels of CALIFORNIA FORTUNE to continue improving.
After the race, M Chadwick (CALIFORNIA FORTUNE) stated that the horse travelled too keenly when racing between PABLOSKY and FABULOUS ONE in the early stages and because of this was not able to finish off the race as it did last start. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA FORTUNE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of FABULOUS ONE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of PABLOSKY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
HOUSE OF FUN, PERPETUAL JOYANCE and MARVEL TRIBE were sent for sampling.

General

1.
Jockey C Y Ho was fined the sum of $2,000 for failing to arrive on course by the required time.
2. 7 February 2018 Happy Valley Racemeeting – Race 6 (406)
The Stewards today questioned Trainer L Ho regarding the instructions given to K C Leung, the rider of GOOD CHOICE AHEAD in this race. Mr Ho stated that at its prior start on 10 January 2018, K Teetan had informed him that he believed that GOOD CHOICE AHEAD would benefit from blinkers being added to the horse’s gear in order for it to focus better. He said Jockey Teetan had mentioned at its last start the horse had taken some time to respond to his riding in the Straight but then had finished off the race well. Mr Ho said it was felt that the addition of blinkers would assist the horse in being able to finish off the race stronger. He said in this race it was felt that there was a lack of genuine speed and with the blinkers reapplied, it was hoped that GOOD CHOICE AHEAD would be able to obtain a position with cover behind the likely leaders of the race. He said however that due to the circumstances of the race GOOD CHOICE AHEAD had been left racing without cover and had travelled too strongly with the blinkers reapplied. He said he felt that for this reason the horse was then not able to finish off the race. He added since the race he had formed the view that GOOD CHOICE AHEAD is not suited to wearing blinkers and therefore he will apply to remove the blinkers from the horse at its next race start. He said it is still hoped that the horse will be able to obtain a forward position, however, to obtain cover so as to allow it to finish off the race as best as it is able.
