This resulted in VICTOR EMPEROR being unable to obtain clear running until approaching the 200 Metres.
Passing the 250 Metres, FAIR COMMENT raced tight outside LAUGHING LORD which shifted out to obtain clear running.
Near the 75 Metres, STRIKING STAR got its head on the side and lay in behind DON WONGCHOY. Before being allowed to race again, DON WONGCHOY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
GOLDEN CANNON lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.
When questioned, C Schofield stated that as SCARBOROUGH FAIR has a tendency to race keenly, he was asked to ride the horse quietly in the early stages and obtain a position in about midfield with cover from barrier 11. He said after beginning well he immediately commenced to steady SCARBOROUGH FAIR in an attempt to obtain cover, however, the horse commenced to prove very difficult to settle and travelled too keenly. He said shortly after the start he attempted to position SCARBOROUGH FAIR outside SOCCER BRAVE, however, SCARBOROUGH FAIR continued to prove very difficult to settle and he had no option but to allow the horse to improve into the lead. He added after continuing to race keenly, SCARBOROUGH FAIR raced more tractably after the 900 Metres, but by this time it had already established somewhat of a margin over the remainder of the field.
A veterinary inspection of UNBEATABLE GUTS immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils.
A veterinary inspection of FAIR COMMENT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
WINNING BOY, SOCCER BRAVE and GOLDEN CANNON were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (309) MOUNT PARKER HANDICAP Class 5 1600 m
Trainer Y S Tsui was fined the sum of $2,000 for incorrectly declaring A Badel as the rider of DAZZLE WINNER when A Sanna had been engaged to ride that horse in this race.
On arrival at the Start, it was noted that VIVA COUNCIL had lost its left front plate. After this plate was refitted, VIVA COUNCIL was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
DAZZLE WINNER, which was difficult to load, will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test before being allowed to race again.

Passing the 1500 Metres, SICHUAN CHIEF momentarily raced in restricted room inside LE PEGASE which shifted in before being straightened by its rider.
Passing the 1200 Metres, FAITHFUL BOY was momentarily steadied away from the heels of WINNING CONTROLLER.
Near the 1050 Metres, when being steadied away from the heels of BRILLIANT MONKEYS, MAGICAL CHAMPION shifted in abruptly, resulting in some inconvenience to LIGHTNING AND GOLD. MAGICAL CHAMPION was promptly corrected by its rider.
After being crossed by SICHUAN CHIEF at the 1000 Metres, VIVA COUNCIL shifted out around the heels of that horse and made contact with LE PEGASE which was taken into a position three wide and without cover.
For some distance after leaving the 900 Metres, FAITHFUL BOY raced keenly and was steadied away from the heels of WINNING CONTROLLER. BRILLIANT MONKEYS, which was trailing FAITHFUL BOY, was steadied away from the heels of that horse approaching the 600 Metres.
M Chadwick (SUPERNATURAL) dropped his whip near the 400 Metres.
Leaving the 100 Metres, WINNING CONTROLLER was momentarily awkwardly placed outside the heels of VIVA COUNCIL which shifted out under pressure.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BRILLIANT MONKEYS, J Moreira stated that the horse had previously experienced issues with blood in the trachea having been detected on a number of occasions. He said in today’s race he had to ride the horse along for a considerable distance in the early stages as BRILLIANT MONKEYS was reluctant to stretch out. He said had he not have ridden the horse along, BRILLIANT MONEYS felt as though it would have got out of its ground in the early stages. He said BRILLIANT MONKEYS did not travel well and throughout the race made a number of abnormal breathing noises. He added BRILLIANT MONKEYS came under pressure at the 400 Metres and after this did not respond to his riding. A veterinary inspection of BRILLIANT MONKEYS immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea and found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported. The performance of BRILLIANT MONKEYS, a favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BRILLIANT MONKEYS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Approaching the 100 Metres, SUPREME WITNESS was steadied away from the heels of MEGA TREASURE which shifted out.
Throughout the race, GLORIOUS LEGACY travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, Mr D J Hall, the trainer of BRILLIANT DREAM, stated that the horse is relatively adaptable in that it has performed well when ridden in both a forward position or from back in the field. He added that where BRILLIANT DREAM is positioned in a race is often contingent on the manner in which it begins. He said when required to race back in the field, BRILLIANT DREAM can be unsuited by the tempo of the race as the horse tends to race ungenerously if the tempo is slow. He said, from the wide barrier today, he instructed Z Purton to have the horse travelling where it was comfortable and if it began well, to take advantage of that and obtain a forward position.
When questioned, N Rawiller stated that he was instructed to obtain a forward position on RED HORSE if possible as it had previously been able to take up a forward position from a wide barrier. He said however that today RED HORSE did not began well and SIGHT SEEING, which was drawn directly to the inside of RED HORSE, clearly began decidedly better than his mount. He said having regard to the manner in which RED HORSE began, he felt that he would have had to do too much work on the horse to obtain a forward position and therefore he elected, in the early stages, to ride it from back in the field as it had also performed well when ridden in this manner in the past. He added after briefly being held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight, when improving inside EMPIRE STAR, RED HORSE then closed off the race strongly when required to be ridden more quietly today.
A veterinary inspection of EVEREST immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
EMPIRE STAR, WUSHU CHAMPION and BRILLIANT DREAM were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (311) GRASSY HILL HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

Despite being hard ridden in the early stages, GLENEALY PRIZE failed to muster speed.

Passing the 650 Metres, AVELLINO got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of RADIANT TREASURE which continued to race keenly and was awkwardly placed behind TRIUMPHAL TRUMPET.
For some distance in the middle stages and rounding the Home Turn, GOLDEN GLORY got its head on the side and lay out.
Approaching the 500 Metres, GLENEALY PRIZE shifted out abruptly away from the heels of MAGIC SUCCESS which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of NICE KICK which shifted out to obtain clear running.
AVELLINO was unable to obtain clear running in the Straight and near the 100 Metres was shifted out abruptly away from the heels of LONDON MASTER to improve to the outside of that horse. Because of this, AVELLINO was not able to be properly tested.

AGREE began only fairly.
UNICRON JEWELLERY was crowded for room on jumping between THE SHOW which shifted out marginally and MI BLANCO which shifted in. Approaching the 100 Metres, GODSPEED and UNICRON JEWELLERY brushed.
When questioned, D Whyte stated that he was asked to have ELECTRIC LIGHTNING racing where it was comfortable from an inside barrier. He said after riding his mount along in the early stages, DESMIOS, GODSPEED and FORTUNE GIGGLES were also all ridden along to his inside. He said he therefore elected to steady his mount and obtain a trailing position behind those runners rather than ride it along in an attempt to clear them. He said ELECTRIC LIGHTNING appears to be losing its early speed and may be suited by a step-up in distance in the near future.
When questioned, A Sanna stated that he was asked to ride SPEEDY WALLY in about a midfield position if possible from barrier 10. He said SPEEDY WALLY began well and he initially rode his mount along so as to be able to clear runners to his inside in order to obtain a position in midfield. He said immediately after the start SPEEDY WALLY commenced to race with its head on the side and lay in which made it difficult for him to position the horse as instructed. He said when there was a line of horses racing to his inside after the 1500 Metres, he elected to allow his mount to continue forward to race outside the lead rather than restrain it given that it was already racing intractably with its head on the side.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of DESMIOS, U Rispoli stated that his mount travelled well behind the speed in the early and middle stages and when shifting his mount to the outside of THE SHOW at the entrance to the Straight, he expected DESMIOS to finish off the race well. He said however that the horse immediately came under pressure and was not completely comfortable in its action. He added when pulling up after the race DESMIOS made a number of abnormal breathing noises. A veterinary inspection of DESMIOS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, DESMIOS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
The Veterinary Officer reported that INDIGENOUS STAR had sustained a wound to the right front coronet.
UNICRON JEWELLERY and GODSPEED were sent for sampling.

As SUPER MISSILE was shifted to the outside of LUCKY LUCKY, SUPER MISSILE and MONEY MONEY bumped on two occasions as both LUCKY LUCKY and MONEY MONEY shifted ground marginally. In this incident, MONEY MONEY became unbalanced. Z Purton was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting out to obtain clear running in similar circumstances.
A veterinary inspection of JOLLY BOUNTIFUL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

POWER MAN was slow to begin.
From the outside barrier, THE CREATETH was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After being ridden along for a considerable distance in the early stages to obtain a forward position, PRIMERO was left racing very wide after the 900 Metres and was therefore steadied to obtain cover behind CALIFORNIA FORTUNE which travelled wide and without cover throughout the race.
Passing the 200 Metres, GOD OF DRAGON raced in restricted room between CALIFORNIA ARCHER and CALIFORNIA FORTUNE which was commencing to give ground.
THE CREATETH was held up for clear running from near the 250 Metres until after the 200 Metres at which stage the horse was directed to the outside of PRIMERO to obtain clear running.
When questioned, A Badel (AFFLUENCE START) stated that in the early stages he was following CALIFORNIA ARCHER. He said the tempo of the race in the early stages was good and near the 900 Metres he observed that INFINITY ENDEAVOUR was being ridden along aggressively in an attempt to obtain a position in front of AFFLUENCE START and behind CALIFORNIA ARCHER. He said at this time he would have had to ride his mount along to remain racing behind CALIFORNIA ARCHER to prevent INFINITY ENDEAVOUR from crossing and he did not believe that this was in the horse’s best interests. He said he therefore allowed INFINITY ENDEAVOUR to shift in in advance of AFFLUENCE START and followed that horse in the middle stages before shifting AFFLUENCE START to the outside of INFINITY ENDEAVOUR at the entrance to the Straight.
A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA FORTUNE and PRIMERO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
INFINITY ENDEAVOUR and PRINCE HARMONY were sent for sampling.

At the time of declaration, T Berry was declared as the rider of FORTUNE PATROL, trained by Mr P O’Sullivan when GO BEAUTY GO, trained by Jockey Berry’s retaining trainer, Mr J Moore, was to be ridden by M Chadwick, a non-claiming freelance jockey. As T Berry was unable to accept an engagement outside of his retaining stable in these circumstances, the Stewards permitted S Clipperton to be substituted as the rider of FORTUNE PATROL and T Berry to be rider of GO BEAUTY GO. After hearing submissions from Mr O’Sullivan and Jockey Berry, Mr O’Sullivan acknowledged that he had erred in arranging for T Berry to ride FORTUNE PATROL and was subsequently fined the sum of $2,000.
BIGWOOD was withdrawn on 28.12.17 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left hind). Before being allowed to race again, BIGWOOD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Throughout the race, LITTLE ISLAND travelled wide and without cover.
Mr D J Hall, the trainer of FAITHFUL TRINITY, informed the Stewards that he asked Apprentice M F Poon to ride the horse in a forward position as it had disappointed in its races to date when ridden from back in the field.
When questioned, T Berry stated that the tempo of the race slackened appreciably after the 800 Metres which resulted in GRAND CHANCELLOR being awkwardly placed behind GREEN DISPATCH. He said he therefore elected to shift to the outside and commenced to make his run rather than remaining racing behind GREEN DISPATCH in a slowly run race. He said GRAND CHANCELLOR initially quickened well rounding the Home Turn, however, at the 300 Metres came under pressure and then was disappointing in the manner in which it failed to close off the race. A veterinary inspection of GRAND CHANCELLOR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GREEN DISPATCH, Z Purton stated that although he had to make some use of the horse in the early stages to obtain a forward position, he was content with how it travelled in the middle stages. He said he placed GREEN DISPATCH under pressure rounding the Home Turn and the horse initially quickened, however, came under pressure near the 250 Metres and after this weakened out of the race. He added when GREEN DISPATCH commenced to weaken, the horse changed stride and appeared reluctant to stretch out fully. A veterinary inspection of GREEN DISPATCH immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, GREEN DISPATCH will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of JOLLY GENE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

T Berry was advised to exercise more care whilst C Schofield was reprimanded and told that the majority of the crowding had emanated from DUNDONNELL shifting in.
Passing the 100 Metres, FIFTY FIFTY shifted out and bumped BEAT THE CLOCK.
Throughout the race, CONTENTMENT travelled wide and without cover.
A veterinary inspection of GIANT TREASURE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.

Approaching and passing the 100 Metres, EASTERN EXPRESS and LUCKY DOLLAR raced tight.
Throughout the race, KINGSFIELD travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, C Y Ho stated that he was asked to obtain cover on SPICY SURE as the horse has, on occasions, proved difficult to settle when not able to obtain cover. He said after beginning awkwardly, SPICY SURE was hampered when crowded for room between runners. He said in the early stages he was able to obtain a position outside RUTHVEN and he expected that horse to shift over to race near the rail, however, RUTHVEN remained racing away from the rail which resulted in SPICY SURE being left racing in a three wide position. He said although he had the opportunity to prevent PERFECT TO PLAY from crossing SPICY SURE approaching the 1000 Metres, he was reluctant to ride his mount along at this time to prevent PERFECT TO PLAY from shifting in as he was told that the horse can prove difficult to settle. He said he therefore elected to allow PERFECT TO PLAY to cross SPICY SURE passing the 1000 Metres. He added although SPICY SURE was obliged to race three wide throughout the race, at all times the horse had cover. He said the pace of the race in the middle stages was not quick and although SPICY SURE may have appeared disappointing in the Straight, due to the circumstances of the race, he was not disappointed with the finishing effort of SPICY SURE. A veterinary inspection of SPICY SURE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of JING JING WIN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
LOCKHEED, KINGSFIELD and NEW ASIA SUNRISE were sent for sampling.

General
1. 27 December 2017 Happy Valley Racemeeting – Race 7 (306)
The Stewards today questioned Trainer T P Yung regarding his instructions in respect of ISHVARA in this race. Mr Yung confirmed that in pre-race discussions with Jockey M Chadwick, ISHVARA’s breathing problems had been discussed in formulating tactics for the horse and it was agreed that ISHVARA should be pressured in such a way from near the 600 Metres which allowed the horse to gradually build its momentum. He said, in his view, M Chadwick carried out his instructions in an appropriate fashion and the horse’s performance was positive in comparison to its most recent disappointing performances. He added accordingly, he was satisfied with Jockey Chadwick’s riding of ISHVARA in the Home Straight.
