RACE 1 – BUSHFIRE APPEAL RACE DAY 25TH JANUARY 1000m:

Yulong Yuheng - Slow to begin.  Between the 400m and the 250m was held up for clear running.

Witherspoon - Rider S. Clenton advised the mare raced keenly when positioned outside the lead and when under pressure in the straight hung in.  She added that over the concluding stages she had some concern with the action of the mare behind and for this reason did not fully test Witherspoon to the finish.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.  Trainer Mr K. Lees stated that he would now look to step Witherspoon up in distance where the mare may be able to lead and control the tempo as the mare has raced successfully in the past when able to dictate terms.  Mr Lees undertook to report back if anything was amiss with Witherspoon subsequent to the race.

Aquitaine - Jumped awkwardly and then from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.  Over the final 150m laid in.

Yulong Monoceros - Jumped awkwardly.

RACE 2 – TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP 1200m:

Show Me The Honey - Over the final 300m of the event was held up for clear running and could not be fully tested.

Assault'N'Bathory - Jumped awkwardly.

Zardoro - Between the 400m and 200m had difficulty obtaining clear running as it endeavoured to improve into a narrow run between Dulette and Siege Warfare.

Lady Demi - Slow to begin and shortly after the start was hampered by Dulette.  Rider B. Ryan stated after being hampered at the start his mount settled at the rear of the field and making the home turn, when positioned to the inside of Electrified, he was unable to improve to that runner's outside and as a consequence he continued to ride forward with a view to seeking inside runs.  He added soon after straightening he became held up on the heels of The Launcher and at the 250m commenced to improve to that runner's outside, whereby he was able to secure clear running near the 200m.  Stewards were satisfied with the tactics adopted on the mare given the position that Lady Demi was in making the home turn.

Dulette - Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

Toulon Brook -  On jumping was bumped by Alternative Facts.  Near the 800m was steadied from the heels of Tale of The Kraut which had been shifted in to find cover.  Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.  Near the 150m was steadied when crowded between Electrified which was taken out by Lady Demi (B. Ryan) and Alternative Facts (B. Looker) which shifted in.  Both B. Ryan and B. Looker were reprimanded and advised to exercise more care.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Magnarock - At the 400m shifted out to improve to the outside of Assault'N'Bathory and as a consequence made contact with Siege Warfare, resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced. Magnarock then raced tight between Siege Warfare and Assault'N'Bathory until near the 250m.

Rioli - A. Hyeronimus was permitted to ride the gelding 0.5kg over its alotted weight of 55.5kg.  Began awkwardly and made contact with the near side front gate of its barrier.

Alternative Facts -Rider B. Looker reported that in his opinion Alternative Facts did not run out the 1200m of today's race.

Tale Of The Kraut -Despite being ridden along in the early stages did not muster sufficient speed to race in a more forward position as anticipated.

RACE 3 – BISLEY WORKWEAR HANDICAP 1200m:

Cradle Mountain - Rider M. Cahill stated that the gelding jumped well but when Passage of Time and Special Reward showed superior pace he elected to take a position with cover behind those runners.  He added as he obtained cover the pace of the event steadied and this resulted in Cradle Mountain overracing, which was the only explanation he could provide for the gelding's disappointing performance.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.  When questioned regarding his riding upon straightening and as to whether there was an opportunity to hold the eventual winner Southern Lad in a pocket to his inside, M. Cahill stated that at this point Cradle Mountain had become under pressure, laid out and consequently he was not able to ride the gelding in a more competitive manner.

Ever Loyal - Had a small amount of blood evident in its mouth on arrival at the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and deemed suitable to race.  Began awkwardly and was then shifted in behind runners in the early stages.

Albumin – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover.

Taniko - Leaving the 400m was hampered when taken out slightly by Albumin which had shifted out and away from Ever Loyal.

RACE 4 – JANUARY CUP 2000m:

Sir Plush - Over the concluding stages could not be fully tested when positioned close to the heels of Taikomochi.  When questioned regarding his riding B. Lerena advised that his instructions were to endeavour to obtain a position with cover but to make a forward move on Sir Plush from near the 550m.  He stated that after commencing well he was able to take up a position trailing the leader Taikomochi however Sir Plush took some time to settle during the running of the event.  He added leaving the 1000m Aqua D’Ivina then improved to his outside and he initially endeavoured to shift to the outside of Taikomochi but was unable to do so when he made contact with Aqua D’Ivina and as a consequence he was left racing behind Taikomochi.  He further stated that he was then obligated to race behind Taikomochi but near the 700m the tempo of the race increased and his mount then raced more tractably from that point.  Stewards advised B. Lerena that in their opinion he had made an error of judgment in the early and middle stages of the event in that he failed to position his mount to the outside of the leader Taikomochi which would have allowed him to make a forward move near the 550m as instructed and also allow him to position his mount to influence the tempo of the race in the early and middle stages.

Mr Garcia - In the straight hung in and proved somewhat difficult to ride out to the finish.

RACE 5 – RANVET HANDICAP 1500m:

Sondelon - Rider A. Hyeronimus advised he had to make some use of the gelding to take up a position outside the leader.  However, Sondelon failed to travel well at any stage of the event, became under pressure from the 600m and weakened noticeably in the straight.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have shifted its near fore plate with no other abnormalities detected.  Co-trainer Mr A. Bott could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance and undertook to report back to the Stewards the results of a veterinary inspection including an endoscopic examination.  Mr Bott was told that Sondelon must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before racing again.

Cuban Royale - From the 1200m raced wide and without cover.

Esteem Spirit - After being crossed by Sondelon near the 1200m commenced to race keenly for some distance.  Was held up making the home turn and did not obtain clear running until the 300m.

Tunero - Slow to begin.  Making the home turn Napoleon Solo hung out and shifted ground resulting in Tunero being hampered when taken wider.  Lost its off-fore plate in running.

Nicochet - From the outside barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.

Savvy Ken - Began awkwardly and was then shifted behind runners in the early stages.

RACE 6 – TAB VENUE MODE HANDICAP 1600m:

Cinquedea – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have speedy cuts to both hind legs.

Frenzied - Jumped awkwardly and shortly after was hampered when crowded between Academy and War Baron, which was bumped and taken out by Showminder.

Spectre - Slow to begin.

Academy - Approaching the 400m was hampered when taken wider  by Rocha Clock (T. Marquand), which shifted out when not clear.  T. Marquand was reprimanded.  Rider R. Dolan stated that Academy travelled comfortably outside the lead but on the home turn was hampered and taken wider when Rocha Clock shifted out.  He stated that from this point his mount took some time to rebalance and he was satisfied with the finishing effort of the gelding.  He added that Academy may derive benefit from the addition of blinkers and also will obtain a fitness benefit from today's performance.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Showminder - Rider C. Williams stated that the gelding was under pressure from the 700m where he was obliged to ride his mount along.  He added that when Cinquedea improved to his inside Showminder commenced to travel again with him for a short distance but on straightening, after receiving some interference on the home turn did not finish the race off.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.  S. Clenton (Cinquedea) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that on the home turn she permitted her mount to shift out when not clear resulting in Showminder having to be checked.  S. Clenton's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on 19 January 2020 and expire on 29 January 2020, on which day she may resume riding.

Rocha Clock - In the early part of the straight was inclined to lay out when placed under pressure.

War Baron - On the home turn was taken wider when Dark Confidant shifted out to improve.

RACE 7 – SCHWEPPES HANDICAP 1500m:

Elusive Nature -Slow to begin.

Pinup Miss -A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have bled from both nostrils.  As this was the first occasion trainer Mr J. Ramsay was told that the mare would incur the mandatory embargoes under AR79(4) in that it cannot be worked on a racecourse for 2 months and prohibited from racing for a period of 3 months.  It must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards.

Seles -Began awkwardly.  Near the 1200m was steadied to avoid the heels of Asharani.  (S. Clenton) which shifted in when not quite clear.  S. Clenton was advised to exercise more care.

Brazilica -From its wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

RACE 8 – HEINEKEN 3 HANDICAP 1400m:

Strome - Bounded on jumping and lost ground (2L).  Rider S. Clenton reported that she had concern with her mount's action in the straight.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Onslaught -Blundered on jumping and lost ground.

All Too Soon -When questioned regarding his riding B. Ryan stated that his instructions had been to go forward and it was open to him to either hold the lead or race outside the lead if circumstances permitted.  He stated after commencing well he elected to go forward and leaving the 1100m commenced to endeavour to take up a position outside the leader ToryJoy however when Charretera held its position to his inside he felt that his mount would be unable to cross that runner and for this reason he elected to steady his mount, which resulted in All Too Soon being left racing wide and without cover for the majority of the event.  After considering B. Ryan's explanation Stewards advised that he should have continued his forward move to cross Charretera rather than conceding that position and being left racing wide.

Charretera -Near the 200m made contact with Phaistos and became slightly unbalanced.  When questioned regarding performance rider C. Graham stated that she was able to position her mount outside the lead and although Charretera raced a little keen when All Too Soon improved to her outside she felt the gelding's performance was still disappointing.  She added that when placed under pressure in the straight Charretera was one paced and may not have handled the step up in grade.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 9 – SKY RACING ACTIVE HANDICAP 1800m:

Matowi -Jumped awkwardly and lost ground.  J. Ford (Seeingisbelieving) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless in that near the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Matowi which had to be checked.  J. Ford's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on 17 January 2020 to expire on 22 January 2020 on which day he may resume riding.

Shalmaneser -As J. Ford was dually engaged Stewards permitted T. Marquand to be substituted as the rider.

Spencer -Jumped awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with San Francisco.

Mr Dependable -Rider A. Hyeronimus stated his instructions were to go forward on the gelding and if circumstances permitted to lead.  He added that from a wide barrier he was obliged to make some use of his mount to cross Spencer and after obtaining the lead near the 1400m Mr Dependable was inclined to race keenly throughout the middle stages of the event.  He added that approaching the 600m when his mount still travelling strongly, he elected to increase the tempo slightly in accordance with his general practice when riding horses from the stable and after Mr Dependable responded strongly to his urgings the gelding's run ended inside the 100m, whereby the first and second placegetters were able to advance past him.  A. Hyeronimus added that, given in retrospect, the manner in which the gelding had raced in the middle stages, this may have contributed to Mr Dependable not having run a strong 1800m.  A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.  Trainer representative Mr J. Livingstone confirmed the instructions issued and advised that Mr Dependable had pleased the stable coming into today's race.

Joigny -On jumping was hampered when bumped by Tinkermosa, which shifted in.

Seeingisbelieving -Jumped the crossing near the 1600m and became unbalanced.  Near the 75m was steadied when crowded between Spencer and Matowi both of which shifted ground slightly.
