Kerrin McEvoy, who won the 2018 Group 1 Melbourne Cup on Godolphin’s Cross Counter (GB), will ride the current co-favourite Finche (GB) in the 2019 renewal of the race it was announced by a co-owner on RSN 927 on Wednesday.
The Chris Waller trained Frankel six-year-old gelding shares $9.00 with last Saturday’s The Bart Cummings winner Surprise Baby (NZ) with TAB’s market. Cross Counter is at $15.00.
Finche, who races in the turquoise, pink sash, white sleeves, pink cap colours of his breeder Prince Khaled Abdullah, was fourth in last year’s Cup.
In three runs this spring he won the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes over 2000m at Randwick on September 21st under McEvoy and then ran second to stablemate King’s Will Dream (IRE) in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes over 2000m at Flemington last Saturday.
Co-owner Brae Sokolski told RSN 927 that McEvoy has accepted the ride for the Cup.
Last year McEvoy rode Cross Counter with 51kg and this year the Charlie Appleby trained five-year-old will carry 57.5kg. Finche has the same 54kg as he did last year.
