Race:1 (409) SAI KUNG HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 4 1200 m

At declaration time, B Shinn was declared as the rider of both CHAMPION PRIDE and NOBLE DESIRE. It was established that B Shinn had a firm commitment to ride CHAMPION PRIDE. As such, the Stewards permitted L Hewitson to be substituted as the rider of NOBLE DESIRE. For this declaration error, Trainer D J Whyte was fined $2,000.
CHAMPION PRIDE was withdrawn on 10.2.20 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (right front tendon injury) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SUPER LUCKY. Before being allowed to race again, CHAMPION PRIDE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Trainer K H Ting was fined $3,000 for presenting FLYING GODSPELL in the Parade Ring with a hood which was not part of that horse’s declared gear.
NOBLE DESIRE began awkwardly.
SUPER LUCKY shifted in at the start and bumped THIS IS CHARISMA.
FLYING GODSPELL lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and began very awkwardly and then was crowded for room on jumping between VICTORY MASTERY and AMAZING, both of which shifted ground.
From wide barriers, AMAZING, VICTORY MASTERY and VICTORY FOR ALL were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages to obtain cover.
After travelling a short distance, WOOD ON FIRE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of GRAND HARBOUR when momentarily crowded for room inside JOLLY CONVERGENCE. SUPER LUCKY, which was racing inside WOOD ON FIRE, shifted in away from that horse, resulting in THIS IS CHARISMA being hampered.
After being steadied in the early stages in an attempt to obtain cover, WINNING STRIKES got its head up making the turn after the 1100 Metres and after momentarily obtaining cover passing the 900 Metres was then left racing wide and without cover near the 800 Metres.
Passing the 900 Metres, SUPER LUCKY commenced to travel keenly.
Making the turn near the 600 Metres, NOBLE DESIRE became badly unbalanced and appeared to slip behind. After the race, L Hewitson stated that NOBLE DESIRE balanced back up after this incident and felt comfortable in its action, however, after being placed under heavy pressure prior to the Home Turn the horse’s action deteriorated and NOBLE DESIRE then gave ground in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of NOBLE DESIRE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, NOBLE DESIRE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, an inspection of the relevant section of the track was undertaken by the Club’s track staff with no areas of concern being identified.
At the entrance to the Straight, FLYING GODSPELL and WOOD ON FIRE raced tight.
Approaching the 200 Metres, AMAZING raced tight inside GRAND HARBOUR.
Passing the 200 Metres, THIS IS CHARISMA shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of JOLLY CONVERGENCE which became unbalanced when racing tight inside SUPER LUCKY. After making further contact with JOLLY CONVERGENCE a short distance later, THIS IS CHARISMA was then shifted to the inside of WOOD ON FIRE in an attempt to obtain clear running.
Passing the 100 Metres, VICTORY FOR ALL and THIS IS CHARISMA bumped as both horses attempted to improve between WOOD ON FIRE and EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE where there was not sufficient room for two horses to proceed. As EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE was then directed out to prevent causing interference to FLYING GODSPELL, this resulted in VICTORY FOR ALL and THIS IS CHARISMA being badly crowded for room and causing THIS IS CHARISMA to be severely checked when forced out onto the hindquarters of WOOD ON FIRE which became badly unbalanced as a result of pressure on its hindquarters. As the Stewards were satisfied that the incident was primarily as a result of both VICTORY FOR ALL and THIS IS CHARISMA attempting to improve into tight running which both riders were entitled to pursue and that the crowding was exacerbated by the movement out by EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE, no further action was taken.
GRAND HARBOUR was held up for clear running behind FLYING GODSPELL over the concluding stages and consequently was not able to be properly tested.
A veterinary inspection of THIS IS CHARISMA and FLYING GODSPELL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE, AMAZING and SUPER LUCKY were sent for sampling.

Race:2 (410) TAI PO HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1650 m

MILLENNIUM DAWN shifted out at the start and bumped PRO FIT which was then shifted out and bumped BEAUTY ANGEL. BEAUTY ANGEL then became unbalanced and shifted in, causing PRO FIT and MILLENNIUM DAWN to be hampered.
From wide barriers, CHARITY WINGS, VITAL SPRING and DRAGON BOLT were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Approaching the 1300 Metres, MILLENNIUM DAWN got its head on the side and lay out towards the heels of SONIC FIGHTER. Then making the turn after the 1100 Metres, MILLENNIUM DAWN again got its head on the side and lost ground after shifting out towards the heels of SONIC FIGHTER.
Approaching the 1100 Metres, PRO FIT commenced to travel keenly and shifted out away from the heels of STARLIT KNIGHT. After being shifted back in in an endeavour to race behind that horse near the 1000 Metres, PRO FIT was then checked away from the heels of STARLIT KNIGHT and again shifted out and consequently, when travelling keenly, raced wide and without cover.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, MILLENNIUM DAWN got its head on the side, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of CHARITY WINGS which became unbalanced. When racing tight inside CHARITY WINGS near the 550 Metres, MILLENNIUM DAWN lost ground when momentarily crowded for rom inside that horse which raced tight inside VILLA FIONN. After this, MILLENNIUM DAWN gave ground and finished tailed out. A veterinary inspection of MILLENNIUM DAWN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MILLENNIUM DAWN was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MILLENNIUM DAWN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned regarding BULB ELITE being ridden in a forward position tonight as compared to its last start when ridden from behind over the same course and distance from a similarly wide barrier, A Badel stated that on both occasions he had not been given any firm instructions on how BULB ELITE should be ridden. He said prior to both races he was asked to ride BULB ELITE according to how the horse began and that if it was to begin well, he could attempt to obtain a forward position, however, if this was not possible, then he should shift BULB ELITE across behind runners and ride for luck. He said at its last start the horse turned its head just prior to the start being effected and did not begin well and then was bumped by the horse to its inside which shifted out. He said as BULB ELITE did not begin well, he made the decision to ride the horse quietly in the early stages as he did not believe it was in the horse’s best interests to attempt to be ridden forward given the amount of work that he would have had to do. He said in tonight’s race BULB ELITE began very well and shortly after the start had established something of a margin over the horses drawn immediately to its inside. He said, given the manner in which the horse began, he rode BULB ELITE positively and due to the slow early sectional of the race he was able to take up a forward position without too much use having to be made of the horse.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that PRO FIT had bled from both nostrils.
A veterinary inspection of and DRAGON BOLT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
BULB ELITE and EVERYONE’S ELITE were sent for sampling.

Race:3 (411) SAI KUNG HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

At declaration time, M L Yeung was declared as the rider of both TAKINGUFURTHER and HAPPY PROJECT. It was established that M L Yeung had a firm commitment to ride TAKINGUFURTHER. As such, the Stewards permitted H T Mo to be substituted as the rider of HAPPY PROJECT. For this declaration error, Trainer T P Yung was fined $2,000.
BREEDERS’ SKY shifted out at the start and bumped COMPASSION STAR.
SHIMMER AND SHINE and WILLFUL, which began only fairly, bumped on jumping.
FOCUS shifted out at the start and bumped FANTASTIC FABIO.
From the outside barriers, HAPPY PROJECT and PLIKCLONE were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Near the 1150 Metres, BREEDERS’ SKY shifted out and bumped COMPASSION STAR.
Near the 250 Metres, DAILY DELIGHT was awkwardly placed outside the heels of FANTASTIC FABIO which shifted out when commencing to give ground.
After the race, Apprentice K H Chan stated that he had to do a lot of work on FANTASTIC FABIO to obtain a forward position. He said in the Straight FANTASTIC FABIO was then not able to finish off the race and gave ground over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of FANTASTIC FABIO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned, C Schofield stated that at its last start FOCUS was ridden forward from the outside barrier and he had to do a lot of work to clear runners to its inside which resulted in the horse weakening over the latter stages of the race. He said, from barrier 9 tonight, it was felt that there were a number of runners drawn more favourably than FOCUS which had raced in a prominent position in previous races and therefore if FOCUS were to be ridden for speed tonight, the horse would again have to do too much work and would not be able to finish off the race. He said when it was suggested to him by the trainer that FOCUS be ridden more quietly tonight, C Schofield said he agreed with this tactic as he felt that this would provide FOCUS with the best opportunity to close off the race. He said after steadying FOCUS in the early stages, he was able to obtain a midfield position with cover passing the 1000 Metres and FOCUS then finished off the race well in the Straight.
When questioned regarding the performance of CALIFORNIA RAD, J Moreira stated that it was intended for the horse to be ridden behind the leaders from barrier 2. He said after being loaded into the barriers, CALIFORNIA RAD was fractious and would not stand still. He said as the start was effected, CALIFORNIA RAD got its head up and then lifted its front feet off the ground and consequently did not begin well. He said this resulted in CALIFORNIA RAD racing well back in the field in the early stages. He said he had to ride CALIFORNIA RAD continuously throughout the early and middle stages in an attempt to have the horse improve its position, however, CALIFORNIA RAD did not travel well at any stage of the race and would not respond to his riding. He added after the 600 Metres CALIFORNIA RAD lay in towards the running rail and was reluctant to shift to the outside of SHIMMER AND SHINE and he was required to ride the horse hard rounding the Home Turn to have it shift to the outside of runners as he felt that, given the manner in which CALIFORNIA RAD had travelled throughout the race, it may finish off better if able to be shifted to the outside in the Straight. He said whilst CALIFORNIA RAD did make up some ground in the Straight, the horse was never finishing off strongly enough to be placed and its performance was very disappointing. He said after the race there was nothing obvious that he could detect which indicated that CALIFORNIA RAD was not sound and the horse returned to the unsaddling area normally. Mr A S Cruz, the trainer of CALIFORNIA RAD, said the horse had done well since its last start and he anticipated that it would perform well tonight. He said he noted that the pace of the race was quicker tonight in the early stages than at its last start and that this may account for CALIFORNIA RAD not travelling comfortably after beginning badly. He said having in mind the manner in which CALIFORNIA RAD began and was reluctant to improve its position in the early and middle stages, he would consider adding blinkers to the horse’s gear in its future starts. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA RAD immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of CALIFORNIA RAD, favourite for tonight’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA RAD will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of HAPPY PROJECT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CALIFORNIA RAD, TAKINGUFURTHER and COMPASSION STAR were sent for sampling.

Race:4 (412) TSUEN WAN HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1800 m

FULL POWER began only fairly.
Passing the 1700 Metres, HAPPY ROCKY raced tight outside HAPPY HOUR which was being steadied to obtain cover behind DIONYSUS COLLIN.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, ROYAL RACER was left racing wide after being unable to obtain cover behind GALA NIGHT. ROYAL RACER was then allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead after the 1200 Metres.
FULL POWER had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
N Callan (ACCLAIMED LIGHT) was spoken to regarding using the whip over the concluding stages on a horse which was clearly winning.
Over the concluding stages, FULL POWER shifted out away from the heels of PRESIDENT STAR, resulting in CALIFORNIA LEGEND being very awkwardly placed outside FULL POWER. B Shinn, the rider of FULL POWER, consequently straightened his mount over the concluding stages to prevent causing further hampering to CALIFORNIA LEGEND and because of this FULL POWER was not able to be ridden out to the end of the race.
When questioned, A Badel (DIONYSUS COLLIN) stated that he was able to obtain a good trailing position behind GALA NIGHT in the early stages and DIONYSUS COLLIN initially travelled comfortably. He said when GALA NIGHT was taken out by ACCLAIMED LIGHT passing the 1100 Metres, GALA NIGHT was then steadied by its rider to obtain cover behind ACCLAIMED LIGHT. He said this resulted in DIONYSUS COLLIN commencing to travel keenly and racing close to the heels of GALA NIGHT approaching and passing the 1000 Metres. He said as GALA NIGHT was continuing to be steadied by its rider and given the manner in which DIONYSUS COLLIN was travelling, he elected to improve his position around that horse and obtain a forward position rather than continuing to be awkwardly placed behind GALA NIGHT. He said he was also aware that C P POWER was racing close to the outside of DIONYSUS COLLIN and he did not want that horse being able to improve around his mount in the middle stages as he did not believe that C P POWER would take him into the race.
A veterinary inspection of C P POWER, which finished tailed out, immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its left front leg. The performance of C P POWER was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, C P POWER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA LEGEND, GALA NIGHT and DYNASTA immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
DIONYSUS COLLIN, ACCLAIMED LIGHT and PRESIDENT STAR were sent for sampling.

Race:5 (413) FANLING HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1000 m

FORZA ANGEL began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of STRONGER, resulting in STRONGER becoming unbalanced and FORZA ANGEL losing ground. FORZA ANGEL was then ridden along for some distance, however, failed to muster speed and raced back in the field.
HONG KONG WIN began only fairly, shifted out and bumped TELECOM PUMA, causing both horses to become unbalanced. HONG KONG WIN was then steadied shortly after the start when racing in restricted room between STRONGER and TELECOM PUMA which shifted in when unbalanced.
QUADRUPLE DOUBLE and BALTIC WHISPER bumped at the start.
From the outside barrier, GOODLUCK GOODLUCK was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
After being ridden along in the early stages from a wide barrier, LITTLE BIRD was steadied approaching the 900 Metres when racing wide in order to obtain cover. When being steadied to obtain cover behind HEART CONQUERED, LITTLE BIRD was awkwardly placed outside the heels of that horse which was racing tight outside MONTREAL.
Near the 750 Metres, HONG KONG WIN was eased when unable to maintain its position inside TELECOM PUMA which was racing tight inside QUADRUPLE DOUBLE.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, HONG KONG WIN momentarily raced tight inside CUE THE MUSIC which got its head on the side and lay in away from QUADRUPLE DOUBLE.
Approaching the 500 Metres, CUE THE MUSIC was very awkwardly placed close to the heels of QUADRUPLE DOUBLE. After this, CUE THE MUSIC improved into tight running inside QUADRUPLE DOUBLE which resulted in CUE THE MUSIC and HONG KONG WIN racing tight rounding the Home Turn.
Near the 150 Metres, LITTLE BIRD shifted out away from the heels of HEART CONQUERED to obtain clear running.
For the majority of the race, HEART CONQUERED travelled wide and without cover.
Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that the riding out of BALTIC WHISPER very close to the finishing line did not affect that horse’s finishing position, Apprentice K H Chan was told to ensure that he rides his mounts out all the way to the end of the race wherever circumstances permit.
After the race, M F Poon, the rider of QUADRUPLE DOUBLE, stated that his mount raced "flat”. A veterinary inspection of QUADRUPLE DOUBLE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of HEART CONQUERED immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
STRONGER and HONG KONG WIN were sent for sampling.

Race:6 (414) KWAI CHUNG HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1650 m

SUPERB DADDY shifted in at the start and was steadied away from the heels of HEAVENLY THOUGHT.
UNIVERSAL GO GO began awkwardly, shifted out and inconvenienced GREAT TREASURE.
SURREALISM was slow to begin.
From the outside barriers, GREAT TREASURE and BIG BANG BONG were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
TOTAL POWER was also steadied shortly after the start to obtain cover.
For some distance approaching and passing the 1300 Metres, AWE, when left racing wide and without cover, was steadied in an attempt to obtain a trailing position. UNIVERSAL GO GO, which was following AWE, was steadied away from the heels of that horse in consequence.
After being left racing wide and without cover, AWE was then allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead near the 700 Metres at which stage UNIVERSAL GO GO (C Y Ho) was left racing wide and without cover. After the race, C Y Ho stated that the circumstances of the race did not suit his mount. He said after being awkwardly placed for a considerable distance behind AWE when racing in a three wide position, UNIVERSAL GO GO then came under pressure when racing without cover after the 700 Metres. He said after being left racing without cover after the 700 Metres, UNIVERSAL GO GO was taken wider still by WINNING DELIGHT after the 500 Metres when that horse shifted out. He added whilst the horse was disappointing, in his opinion, there were a number of circumstances which accounted for its poor run.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, SUPERB DADDY and HAR HAR HEART raced tight.
When questioned, K Teetan stated that at its most recent run ZHAN JIANG ROCKS had got too far out of its ground due to the circumstances of the race. He said as it was anticipated that there was not much speed engaged in tonight’s race, he suggested to connections that it would be in the best interests of ZHAN JIANG ROCKS to try and obtain a more forward positon given that he would not have to do too much work on the horse in the early stages to cross runners to its inside. He said after discussing the tactics with the connections, it was agreed for ZHAN JIANG ROCKS to be ridden more prominently if possible. He said ZHAN JIANG ROCKS began well and he was able to obtain a forward position without having to make too much use of the horse. He said although ZHAN JIANG ROCKS did not have cover in the middle stages, it travelled well and after obtaining cover behind AWE near the 700 Metres, he shifted ZHAN JIANG ROCKS to the outside of the horse rounding the Home Turn and it then finished off the race well.
A veterinary inspection of UNIVERSAL GO GO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
HEAVENLY THOUGHT and WINNING DELIGHT were sent for sampling.

Race:7 (415) KWAI CHUNG HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 3 1650 m

REYNOLDS was withdrawn on 10.2.20 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter RACING LUCK. Before being allowed to race again, REYNOLDS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
BEAUTY HAPPY began only fairly and then was steadied shortly after the start when crowded for room between FARSHAD and VIGOR FAME which was taken in by PARTY TOGETHER. After this, BEAUTY HAPPY was shifted across behind runners from a wide barrier.
XIANG BAI QI was also steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
After travelling a short distance, RACING LUCK raced tight inside STARSHIP which was taken in by JADE FORTUNE which was shifted in away from the heels of SOLAR WAI WAI.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, XIANG BAI QI lay in and was reluctant to shift to the outside of runners.
FLYING QUEST had some difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the Home Turn.
For the majority of the race, JADE FORTUNE travelled wide and without cover.
M F Poon (FLYING QUEST) was advised against the practice of raising his whip arm above the height of his shoulder.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of VIGOR FAME, Z Purton stated that the horse was able to enjoy a "soft” lead and was able to dictate the tempo of the race to suit. He said VIGOR FAME was still travelling well after the 400 Metres, however, when headed by PARTY TOGETHER and FARSHAD, immediately came under pressure, did not quicken as he anticipated and commenced to give ground shortly after entering the Straight. He added given the run that VIGOR FAME had during the race, he was not able to offer any explanation for the manner in which it gave ground noticeably in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of VIGOR FAME immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of VIGOR FAME, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, VIGOR FAME will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned, M F Poon (FLYING QUEST) stated that passing the 300 Metres he considered improving between JADE FORTUNE and RACING LUCK as a run was available between those horses. He said however he noted that the rider of RACING LUCK was using his whip in the left hand and that the horse was stating to drift inwards near the 250 Metres, so he elected to direct FLYING QUEST to the outside of RACING LUCK approaching the 200 Metres. He said as he did this, the rider of RACING LUCK then changed his whip into his right hand, however, by this stage he had already committed to shift to the outside of RACING LUCK.
A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY HAPPY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SOLAR WAI WAI, FARSHAD and RACING LUCK were sent for sampling.

Race:8 (416) FO TAN HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1200 m

PING HAI GALAXY shifted out at the start and bumped BEAUTY SPARK.
COPARTNER SPIRIT began very awkwardly and lost ground and subsequently finished tailed out. A veterinary inspection of COPARTNER SPIRIT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of COPARTNER SPIRIT was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, COPARTNER SPIRIT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
G van Niekerk (SHOUSON) explained that he was asked to ride the horse in a forward position. He said however that SHOUSON began only fairly and he felt that he would have had to do too much work from the wide barrier to obtain a forward position as instructed and therefore he elected to shift SHOUSON across behind runners to obtain cover. A veterinary inspection of SHOUSON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
Approaching the 1100 Metres, PING HAI GALAXY raced in restricted room between DIAMOND BRILLIANT and BEAUTY SPARK which shifted in marginally.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, GREEN REIGN got its head on the side and lay out.
Passing the 400 Metres, SHOUSON was severely checked after attempting to improve between COPARTNER SPIRIT and FRESH POWER where there was insufficient room.
Approaching the 300 Metres, CALIFORNIADEEPSHOT was inconvenienced when shifted out away from the heels of VICTORY IN HAND (A Badel) which shifted out. A Badel was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of PING HAI GALAXY, Trainer J Size stated that, in his opinion, the horse’s performances had improved from race to race this campaign. He said although PING HAI GALAXY finished last at its most recent run, the horse was not beaten far after being required to race wide and without cover from the 800 Metres. He said PING HAI GALAXY was racing at Happy Valley for the first time tonight after not having previously trialed here and was able to obtain a good run behind the speed from the inside barrier. He said whilst he did not anticipate that PING HAI GALAXY would be able to win tonight’s race, given the strong composition of the field, he did anticipate that the horse would again race well.
When questioned regarding the performance of WHAT A LEGEND, C Schofield stated that he was able to obtain a good run behind the speed and WHAT A LEGEND travelled very well. He said he shifted WHAT A LEGEND to the outside of CALIFORNIADEEPSHOT after the 500 Metres to make his final run as the horse had appreciated being ridden in this manner previously when successful. He said WHAT A LEGEND did not pick up as he anticipated rounding the Home Turn and after finishing the race off steadily after the 300 Metres gave ground over the final 100 Metres and was disappointing in the manner in which it failed to close off. A veterinary inspection of WHAT A LEGEND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CALIFORNIADEEPSHOT, PING HAI GALAXY and DIAMOND BRILLIANT were sent for sampling.
