Friday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.
After all the glitz and glamour of the 2017 Singapore Racing Awards and the New Year festivities, it’s back to business with the racing returning to Friday and Sunday this weekend.
And it’s a solid card to kick off Friday racing in 2018 with some serious horses in BE BEE and the exciting NOWYOUSEE headlining the entries.
The pair had been entered in the Class 3 Poly sprint over 1200m and a clash was likely but thankfully the race has two divisions as both can win.
BE BEE is first to head to the starter in race 6 on the card and the newly-crowned Champion 2YO (now a 3YO) will have his work cut out with last start winner, GOLDEN SWORD, a big danger, as is AUGUSTANO and LIM’S RACER.
NOWYOUSEE also has some stiff opposition to face in DRACO who looks due and ELITE POWER who just missed at his Singapore debut behind BE BEE.
But the unbeaten 3YO comes off a superb trial and the step up to 1200m should see him show his best and be very hard to beat.
Best Bets: (TURF CHAMPION race 3, win), (BANGKOK BOY race 2, value) and (PRECIOUS GEM race 5, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (1, 2, 4 and 6), race 7 (1, 3, 4, 5 and 6), race 8 (1, 3 and 5), race 9 (2, 4, 5 and 9).

Selections; 7 POMP - 3 AUSPICIOUS ACE - 8 TURQUOISE SON - 1 ALARANCH
This race has the feel of a Class 5 field so the form from that sort of Company will hold up. And POMP won well enough to think he has more to offer than just his maiden win in Class 5. The 4YO won with relative ease on that occasion (on what was a very wet Polytrack) and from gate 3 with a 3kg claim, he might show them a clean pair of heels again. Of the rest with good Class 5 form to their names, TURQUOISE SON has been in very honest form and his last start was better than the result in the book while METTLESOME and HOT GOLD should be thereabouts. The dangers could be the higher rated horses in AUSPICIOUS ACE who will be running on strongly under V Duric while ALARANCH first up from a short spell wins without surprising. Betting Strategy - watch the market and play with care but POMP can win.
1 ALARANCH *** Resuming with blinkers added and can show up first up on best form although wide gate a concern. 8.00
2 BLACK MAGIC ** Also drawn badly but will appreciate getting back on the Poly and pay to keep safe at odds. 20
3 AUSPICIOUS ACE *** Disappointing last start but will be running on strongly and can win in this field. 5.00
4 ANGHIARI * Maiden who is struggling. 50
5 GALLANT HEIGHTS * Needs much longer. 50
6 METTLESOME ** Back in trip but has been in solid form of late and a must for exotics. 12
7 POMP *** Excuses two back and last start win good enough for this Company. 3.00
8 TURQUOISE SON *** Never involved last start and hard to fault honest and winning form prior. Goes close. 4.00
9 SOON YI ** Pulled up lame last start so happy to give another chance as will be running on. 12
10 ASTROCANDY * Gets upgrade to blinkers and gets gate 1 but needs to show more before considering. 33
11 HOT GOLD ** Just fair at his last couple but recent trial with pacifiers good enough to keep safe. 12
12 SWEET BUDDY * Struggling. 50
13 SNIP ** Form reads badly but looked to have something in hand last start and worth a look at odds. 20
Selections; 8 PER INCHARGE - 2 BANGKOK BOY - 1 AUSPICIOUS DAY - 5 EDDIE GRAY
Plenty of important gear changes to consider in this Restricted Maiden with four horses likely to improve with blinkers added first time. But it may be PER INCHARGE with blinkers downgraded to winkers who is the one to beat. The 3YO was gallant in defeat at his second career start and gave every indication he enjoys a good battle and will be hard to hold out over 1400m. But horses with blinkers added are always worth a second look and BANGKOK BOY could be the biggest improver. The well-bred 3YO showed improvement last start and a subsequent trial with headgear suggests he is ready to show his best. EDDIE GRAY (at value), KRANJI GOLD and OVERSEER the three others with blinkers added and market watch the order of the day. AUSPICIOUS DAY could beat them all on his recent form and SKYDANCE ECLIPSE is also worth including. Betting Strategy - look for value with BANGKOK BOY and EDDIE GRAY.
1 AUSPICIOUS DAY *** Foot on the till and gets his chance from gate 3 in this field. 3.00
2 BANGKOK BOY *** Showed improvement last start but more importantly come off a nice blinkers trial and could give a sight with headgear added. 8.00
3 HENG KINGDOM ** Ran on OK to back before never being the hunt last start. Could improve with tongue-tie added. 20
4 CENTURION * Showed little on debut but subsequent trial OK so could improve for the run. 33
5 EDDIE GRAY *** Very disappointing at the races but best trial was with blinkers so look for big improvement. 12
6 KRANJI GOLD *** Another who improves with blinkers added first time and shown enough to think he wins one soon. 6.00
7 LIM'S KEYWAY * Resuming after poor debut back in July. No. 100
8 PER INCHARGE *** Gave the winner a good battle last start after placing on debut. Big show with blinkers to winkers. 4.00
9 PROVOCATEUR ** Gate a concern but wasn't asked to do much on debut and will improve with racing. 20
10 SKYDANCE ECLIPSE *** Blew his chances at the start on debut and effort to the wire good enough to keep very safe. 8.00
11 QUEEN OF QUEENS * No. 200
12 OVERSEER ** Solid without being spectacular at two starts but gets blinkers so market watch in order. 20
13 KING OF GLORY * US-bred 3YO who hasn't shown enough at the trials to consider. 50
Selections; 1 TURF CHAMPION - 7 DANGER ZONE - 5 PRINCE DARCI - 10 DESTINY KNIGHT
TURF CHAMPION looks the standout in this Class 4 (Non Premier) with solid form on the board and the step up to 1800m in his favour. In fact the only problem may be the 4YO Australian-bred gelding may even need longer again to show his best but in this field with V Duric to steer, he will be extremely hard to hold out. The other issue is that he should start at a very short quote and is yet to win in Singapore (and his only win in Australia was over 2000m). So looking elsewhere you may want to consider DANGER ZONE who can race on the pace and may be the horse he has to run down to beat. PRINCE DARCI and DESTINY KNIGHT two others suited at the trip and track but it is TURF CHAMPION's to lose on paper. Betting Strategy - TURF CHAMPION hard to beat and box with 5, 7 and 10 in exotics.
1 TURF CHAMPION *** Dour type with two solid runs under his belt in Singapore and can win stepping up to 1800m. 2.00
2 DANZEB ** Has been mixing his distances but showing enough to include in exotics. 16
3 PRIME TURF * No. 50
4 BIG BANKER ** Rarely seen on this surface but has a turf win to his name and trip suits. 12
5 PRINCE DARCI *** Never involved until eye-catching late on the Poly last start and better on the turf so worth a look. 6.00
6 RAFALE ** Can make excuses for some poor form of late and could add value to exotics. 33
7 DANGER ZONE *** Endured a horrid run last time out and happy to follow on form prior with forward run expected. 6.00
8 IMDRAGON ** Ran on OK last start but beaten a long way and skinny end of exotics look best. 20
9 MATSURIBAYASHI ** Never really got involved at his last couple but could improve with more positive ride from gate 2. 20
10 DESTINY KNIGHT *** Nothing at his last couple but improves lengths stepping up to 1800m. 6.00
Selections; 12 WAITAHANUI - 1 LIBECCIO - 7 MR COLIN - 9 PURE SPARK
WAITAHANUI and PURE SPARK both will have admirers after running second at their respective debuts but barriers will have a say in who starts favourite in this maiden. WAITAHANUI drew favourably in gate 3 and, after a very good debut behind Nova Storm, he will get the favours here and should be hard to beat with J Powell retaining the ride. G Boss on PURE SPARK will need to earn his pay from gate 13 but again, his debut run suggests he is up to the task and may be the value pick. Plenty of others that win without surprising and LIBECCIO will enjoy gate 2 and will be in this a very long way while a newcomer in MR COLIN certainly has to be respected on the back of a good recent trial. Betting Strategy - LIBECCIO each-way.
1 LIBECCIO *** Did it tough last start from the wide gate so forget as wins soon with gate 2 and a 2kg claim a factor. 4.00
2 BRING ME JOY * Battled away without being a threat last start and wide gate doesn't help. 20
3 VALERIUS * Impossible on form but could improve at long odds with blinkers on first time. 100
4 CHAMPION TEAM * Will strip fitter for first up run after very long break but like to see support before considering. 33
5 DYNAMIC EAGLE * Improved effort last start after being disappointing with support on debut but wide gate makes this very tough. 20
6 GOOD PEOPLE * Good people maybe but horse questionable. 200
7 MR COLIN *** Newcomer whose most recent trial with blinkers was his best so worth a look on debut with V Duric up. 8.00
8 MYSTIC PRIDE * Beaten a long way on debut but OK very late and will improve for the run. 100
9 PURE SPARK *** Wide gate a concern but showed more than enough on debut to think he can win this with luck in running. 4.00
10 SATELLITE FIGHTER ** Resuming after just battling last start but showed speed on debut and pay to keep safe. 12
11 SATELLITE KINGDOM ** Won his recent trial in a slow time and would like to see market support before considering. 12
12 WAITAHANUI *** Had support when just missing on debut and hard to beat in this. 3.00
13 NICATOR * No. 200
14 BRIMSTONE * Gets blinkers but that may not be enough. 100
15 PRINCE ALEXANDER ** Resuming after ordinary debut but had shown up at trial prior so worth a market watch. 20
Selections; 3 PRECIOUS GEM - 8 DRAGON - 4 POWERFUL AS WIND - 1 GALAXY EXPRESS
A dead-set raffle but a market watch could be the order of the day. PRECIOUS GEM looks out of form but the race suits and a subtle gear change - winkers on - could make the difference in what should be a suitable trip. Three or so horses in GALAXY EXPRESS, FORTUNE SPIRIT and to a lesser extent, POWERFUL AS WIND, all come off poor runs but were in good form prior so have to be respected. Of the trio, POWERFUL OF WIND had excuses (bad start) so he is definitely worth another look with R Curatolo up. DRAGON has drawn wide but has the most solid form going into this race and he wins without surprising. Betting Strategy - play with extreme caution but PRECIOUS GEM could run a race.
1 GALAXY EXPRESS *** Nothing last start but may pay to ignore as previous form good enough to win this. 5.00
2 FORTUNE SPIRIT ** Another coming off a shocker but some hope on form prior. 7.00
3 PRECIOUS GEM *** Form reads badly but gets winkers and this race suits so can win. 4.00
4 POWERFUL AS WIND *** Start looked costly last time out and some hope on form prior with market a good guide. 5.00
5 BAYMAX * Struggles as a rule. 33
6 MILITARY ALLIANCE * Tongue-tie removed after poor run but turf form remains a query. 12
7 YELLOW GOLD * No. 200
8 DRAGON *** Drawn wide but looks due and get this chance in this suitable affair. 4.00
9 GRAND PARIS * Gets gate 1 and trip suits but query on the turf. 20
10 BALKAN CHALLENGER ** Yet to place in some 22 starts but ran on OK last start and could add value to exotics. 33
11 HOLY THOMAS * Struggles as a rule. 100
12 PEREGRINE FALCON * No. 200
13 SUN DANCE * Just battling. 33
14 URBAN LEGEND ** Form looks hopeless but will be running on better than most and will be odds. 20
Selections; 2 BE BEE - 1 GOLDEN SWORD - 6 AUGUSTANO - 3 GREY FALCON
BE BEE could make it two wins in just five days after being crowned Champion Two-Year-Old at Monday's Singapore Horse Awards. And while he faces his biggest test to date in this Class 3 Poly sprint, he is three wins from just four starts and his recent eye-catching trial suggests he is on top of his game. In his favour is that the race has no depth although another 3YO in AUGUSTANO looks a smart Poly sprinter. The Australian-bred gelding just missed on debut on the Poly before winning his only other starts on the all-weather. He is resuming but trialling well enough to give this a shake. The only other serious hope is GOLDEN SWORD who was impressive winning first-up after a long spell. He has form in this Company and as a 5YO has maturity on his side. Betting Strategy - Look for value on GOLDEN SWORD.
1 GOLDEN SWORD *** Resumed with breathtaking late run to just win over 1000m and pay to follow. 3.00
2 BE BEE *** Newly-crowned Champion 2YO, who resumed with good poly win as a 3YO and hard to beat again. 2.50
3 GREY FALCON ** Form better than it reads and a must for exotics at odds. 20
4 LIM'S RACER *** Resuming after backing up a first-up win with a solid effort in this Company so must be respected. 4.00
5 ZEUS ** Resuming and better over longer but has first-up form this trip so keep safe in exotics. 20
6 AUGUSTANO *** Resuming. Progressive Poly sprinter who showed enough at recent trial to give this a shout. 8.00
7 ELITE GENERAL * Needs to improve on recent form. 100
8 PURE JUSTICE ** Form better than it reads on the Poly and always worth a look in exotics at odds. 50
9 KNIGHT WAGER * Nothing last start and has been battling but runs on when in the mood. 100
10 SUPERSONICSURPRISE ** Just fair at his last couple but for prior suggests he has something to offer. 20
Selections; 3 MIGHTY EMPEROR - 1 MR SCORSESE - 5 TERMS OF REFERENCE - 4 MAXIMUS
A moderate field meet in this KSC over 1600m. MIGHTY EMPEROR is an honest journeyman in this company and ran a personal best on turf last start and very much appreciates being back on the Poly; with the visor back on can be in the finish. MR SCORCESE has always shown promise and should be suited in this class; he has won over this trip, placed last start on poly over 1800m and should prove hard to hold off. TERMS OF REFERENCE is another honest one in this company, has won at this trip, his trial was solid and with blinkers off so should be prominent. Of the others MAXIMUS battled on over 1600m on turf last start following two good 1100m wins in Class 4 while BLACK SWAN would like longer but has won on poly and with Michael Rodd up should be prominent throughout. Betting strategy - MIGHTY EMPEROR win.
1 MR SCORSESE *** Has won over this trip and placed last start on poly over 1800m. Should be suited here and prove hard to hold off. 4.00
2 SANDTOP * Blinkers to pacifiers but has done little since coming from Macau. Getting down in grade and could improve over this trip. 16
3 MIGHTY EMPEROR *** Consistent in this company and ran a personal best on turf last start. With visor back on can be in the finish. 4.00
4 MAXIMUS *** Battled on over 1600m on turf last start following two good 1100m wins in Class 4. Should be handy throughout. 6.00
5 TERMS OF REFERENCE *** Trial was solid and blinkers come off. Has an excellent poly record and has won at this trip. Should be prominent. 4.00
6 BLACK SWAN *** Would like longer but has won on poly (record time) and with Michael Rodd up should be prominent throughout. 8.00
7 ONE RAR * Not the most reliable these days but did show improvement last start. 25
8 O'WHAT A FEELING ** Blinkers off after disappointing last start. Always some show and recent trial was good. 14
9 CHASE * Trip suits but hasn't won for a long time and only wins have been on turf. 20
10 SHE'S THE ONE * Battled on solidly in Class 4 last start following two good wins in weaker company. Might need easier. 33
Selections; 5 NOWYOUSEE - 3 ELITE POWER - 1 DRACO - 8 AUTUMN RUSH
A few smart ones in this Class 3 but the punters may drop from the trees to back the unbeaten NOWYOUSEE. Yes, the 3YO did just win at start two but his recent trial was very (very) good and the step up to 1200m should be ideal. ELITE POWER had support and just missed at Singapore debut (behind the smart Be Bee); he is well drawn and should be prominent throughout. DRACO's only wins are on turf but he is rarely far away and this class and distance suit. They look better than the rest although MR LUCK is always a show on the Poly as is AUTUMN RUSH. Keep HERO I AM and SUPER LINE safe for exotics. Betting strategy - NOWYOUESEE win, saver on DRACO.
1 DRACO *** Only wins are on turf but rarely far away and class and distance suit. Will be charging late. 4.00
2 MR LUCK ** Would prefer 1000m but has won at this trip and should be running on at odds. 20
3 ELITE POWER *** Had support and just missed at Singapore debut behind Be Bee. Well drawn and should be prominent throughout. 4.00
4 HERO I AM ** Has won at this trip and his most recent trial was solid. Placed over this trip in KSC class last outing and should get a good run throughout. 12
5 NOWYOUSEE *** Shows promise and has won both outings in Singapore. Up in class and trip but distanced them in recent trial. 2.40
6 SUPER LINE ** Hasn't won for a while but gets blinkers and always some show on the Poly. 16
7 LONGHU * Has battled at recent outings and trial was moderate. May need easier. 33
8 AUTUMN RUSH ** Struggled last start on turf but better on poly. Would prefer 1100m but should be prominent. 33
9 THE COSMOS ** Hasn't won for a while but is rarely far away. Has no weight and could be closing late. 16
10 BEST WISHES * Shown little since changing stables and unplaced at all seven poly runs. 50
11 KATAGAS ** Battles away and has no weight. Might need class 4 but should be running on. 33
12 PREMIER FIGHTER * Recent form moderate. Might need 1000m and easier. 100
Selections; 5 BAFFERT - 4 LIM'S BLAST - 2 NEPEAN - 9 PREFERRED
There are two interesting runners in this Class 4 on the poly over 1100m, the first being BAFFERT. He has had two runs on turf in Singapore but his only win in Australia was on the synthetic at Geelong. His recent trial was strong and with blinkers on and Michael Rodd to ride, he should be prominent. The other of interest is the newcomer NEPEAN. He is a Randwick Maiden winner over 1400m whose last start was in Group 3 Company; his trials have been sound and whilst he might want longer could race well fresh - watch for support. Of the others, PREFERRED was in solid form in this class and distance before the Xmas break and he should be running on while LIM'S BLAST won a Maiden three starts back over this trip and his subsequent turf efforts have been solid. For the exotics include the honest STOCK BROKER and LIM'ELUSIVE who will enjoy getting back on the poly. Betting strategy - BAFFERT to win.
1 LIM'S ELUSIVE ** Blinkers back on and has benefited from recent trial. Could improve with Curatolo to ride. 8.00
2 NEPEAN *** Randwick Maiden winner over 1400m whose last start was in Group 3 company. Trials have been sound. Might want longer but could race well fresh. Watch for support. 5.00
3 STOCK BROKER ** Suited in this company. Claim helps and can be prominent from the good gate. 8.00
4 LIM'S BLAST *** Won Maiden three starts back over this trip and subsequent turf efforts have been solid. Should be running on. 6.00
5 BAFFERT *** Gets blinkers and only win was on synthetic at Geelong. Recent trial strong and should be prominent. 4.00
6 MIKCAIPHO ** Gets blinkers but efforts since arriving in Singapore have been moderate and has suffered from heat stress so take on trust. 25
7 STEEL CUTTER * Drops back in trip and only win was on turf over 1400m. Might find these too sharp. 20
8 INFERMO * Resuming after a year off. Was consistent last preparation but may need easier and wide gate doesn't help. 16
9 PREFERRED *** In solid form this class and distance before Xmas break. Should be running on. 6.00
10 SOUTHERN CHIEF * Won Class 5 two starts back over this trip. This is harder but could be running on. 20
11 SUPER GENIUS * Resuming after returning not striding out freely last start. Claim helps but poorly drawn and might need easier. 33
12 SURE WIN * Resuming and hasn't won for a long time. Has speed but stamina suspect. 33
13 SATELLITE MASTER ** Maiden who class 5 over this trip last start and has changed stables. Trialled well. Could show up but eligible for easier. 33
14 OCEAN MASTER * Maiden who runs on but can find easier. 50
