After receiving a report from the Compliance Assurance Team regarding their inspection at the stable of Richard Laming this morning the Stewards opened an inquiry and took initial evidence from the attending Compliance Assurance Team members regarding an alleged race-day treatment of Jamaican Rain in contravention of the rules. Race 7 LEXUS MELBOURNE CUP - 3200 metres:

Acting under the rules and prior to correct weight, Stewards lodged an objection on behalf of the connections of Il Paradiso (USA), 4th placegetter, against Master Of Reality (IRE), 2nd placegetter, on the grounds of alleged interference over the concluding stages. It was established that near the 50 metres Master of Reality (IRE) commenced to shift in taking Il Paradiso (USA) in off its course then continuing to tighten Il Paradiso in onto the hindquarters of Vow And Declare. Stewards were of the view that had the interference not occurred Il Paradiso (USA) would have finished ahead of Master Of Reality (IRE) at the finish and therefore upheld the objection and amended the placings as follows; Vow And Declare (1st), Prince Of Arran (GB) (2nd), Il Paradiso (USA) (3rd) and Master Of Reality (IRE) (4th).

At a further enquiry Frankie Dettori (Master Of Reality IRE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provision of AR131(a). The careless riding being that passing the 50 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Il Paradiso (USA) resulting in Il Paradiso (USA) being taken in off its course and tightened onto the hindquarters of Vow And Declare. F Dettori had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of nine meetings to commence midnight 5 November, 2019 and to expire midnight 13 November, 2019. (2 metro, 7 provincial). In assessing penalty the Stewards were of the view that the incident qualified for the low range category of carelessness and took into account his guilty plea and record and that it was a Group 1 race.

Latrobe Slow to begin.

Il Paradiso (USA) Slow to begin. Taken in off its course near the 50 metres and tightened onto the hindquarters of Vow And Declare.

Neufbosc Jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and inconvenienced Magic Wand. Over raced in the early and middle stages. Passing the winning post on the first occasion got its head up when being restrained off heels.

Magic Wand - Inconvenienced at the start. Held up for clear running form the 500 metres to the 400 metres.

B Prebble had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of six meetings to commence midnight 7 November, 2019 and to expire midnight 12 November, 2019 (1 metro, 5 provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea, that it was a Group 1 race, his record in this area and the totality of his whip use.

Cross Counter (GB) Raced keenly in the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had sustained a wound to the right hind cannon and hock. A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again.

Youngstar Steadied passing the 300 metres when tightened for room between Il Paradiso (USA) and Twilight Payment, which was taken in by Raymond Tusk (IRE), which shifted in whilst being ridden along.

Raymond Tusk (IRE) A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have sustained a wound to the left fetlock. A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again. Rider Jamie Spencer was severely reprimanded for breaching the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(i) in that he used his whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100 metres.

Rostropovich (IRE) Eased down in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame. Rostropovich was treated on course and transferred to Werribee Equine Hospital for further assessment. A veterinary clearance is required prior to being permitted to race again.

Prince Of Arran (GB) Michael Walker pleaded guilty to breaching the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on twelve occasions prior to the 100 metres. M Walker had his licence to ride in races suspended for a total of seven meetings to commence midnight 7 November, 2019 and to expire midnight 13 November, 2019 (1 metro, 6 provincial). Further, M Walker was fined $10,000. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea, that he was the second placegetter in a Group 1 race, his record in this area, that it was a significant breach of the whip rule and the totality of his whip use.

Race 8 FURPHY PLATE - 1800 metres:

Junipal Fractious in the barrier. Underwent a veterinary examination and was passed suitable to race. Rider John Allen reported his mount was disappointing and may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. Stewards will follow up with the stable.

Kiwia Slow to begin.

Second Bullet - Raced three wide without cover in the early and middle stages before striding to sit outside the leader passing the 1000 metres. Rider Damien Oliver could offer no explanation for the performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

MossNDale App Jack Martin could offer no explanation for the performance. As MossNDale had left the course prior to a veterinary examination a veterinary clearance is required prior to racing again. Trainer Peter Gelagotis stated that the gelding may be better ridden more conservatively, and it would be the intention at its next start to ride the gelding in this manner.

Race 9 MSS SECURITY SPRINT - 1200 metres:

Royal Symphony Underwent a veterinary examination on arrival on course and was passed suitable to race. Jumped away awkwardly, shifted in and bumped Crown Fontein. Over raced in the early stages. Deserved Checked shorty after the start when tightened between Excused and Its Kind Of Magic, which both shifted ground.

California Salto Jumped away awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Shifted out to improve near the 300 metres and as a result Akari, Night Express and Pretty Brazen were taken out wider. Rider Tommy Berry reported the filly, which was racing in the anti-clockwise direction for the first time, did not travel comfortably and failed to finish the race off.
