Race 1 - Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed) - 1000m:

Sun City - bounded on jumping away and lost ground.

California Honey - began awkwardly.

Song Brocade - slow to begin. Passing the 600m commenced to over-race and as a result was then steadied off the heels of Memphis Rock.

Memphis Rock - when making ground was steadied and shifted in to avoid the heels of Grand Scholar passing the 50m.

Forbidden Palace - tailed off; rider Hugh Bowman reported that his mount raced greenly in the early stages and then failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

The Astrologist - rider Luke Currie reported that the colt was worked up pre-race and in his opinion, this may have contributed to the performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Mercury - a post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame in the off foreleg and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Race 2 - Antler Luggage Stakes (Listed) - 1400m:

More Than Exceed (NZ) - underwent a veterinary examination after arriving on course and was passed suitable to race.

Wild Planet - began awkwardly and made contact with Peaceful (NZ) and lost ground. Raced three wide without cover.

Khulaasa - after being held up shifted out to obtain a clear urn and bumped East Indiaman near the 300m.

Cross Legend - when shifting out to obtain a clear run, clipped the heels of Peaceful (NZ) and knuckled near the 200m.

East Indiaman - rider Luke Currie reported that after beginning well he found himself further forward and elected to stride so not to be caught wide without cover.

Sundarbans (NZ) - rider Brenton Avdulla was fined the sum of $300 under the provisions of AR145 for returning to scale in excess of a half kilogram over his declared riding weight.

Ranier - Stewards questioned rider Hugh Bowman regarding his riding of the colt in the straight. He reported that he was held up for clear running until near the 100m, whereby he then made the decision to come to the outside of Wild Planet where there was sufficient room to improve. He added that after initially attempting a run to the inside of Wild Planet passing the 200m he then had to steady due to that gelding shifting in slightly. Stewards questioned Hugh Bowman as to the reason why he did not attempt the run between Wild Planet and Big Night Out sooner than he did passing the 100m. He explained that he was aware that Syds Coin had been racing to his outside and that had he shifted out sooner towards that colt, then he may have caused Syds Coin to be taken out onto the heels of Big Night Out. After taking into account all the circumstances, Stewards severely reprimanded Hugh Bowman for failing to shift out and obtaining a clear run passing the 100m sooner than he did on this occasion and that he would be expected to do so when racing in similar circumstances in future. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 3 - Furphy Paris Lane Stakes (Listed) - 1400m:

Im Wesley - when being restrained near the 1200m, shifted out across the heels of Holbien (Stephen Baster) which was shifting in; Stephen Baster was severely reprimanded. Rider Craig Newitt reported that the gelding hung out from the 700m until straightening.

Sir John Lavery (IRE) - after being held up was checked near the 200m when attempting a run where there was insufficient room between Holbien and Spanner Head, which after initially shifting out slightly, then shifted back in. Over the concluding stages raced in restricted room between Im Wesley and Spanner Head.

Holbien - rider Stephen Baster reported that his mount felt amiss in its action. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

The track was upgraded from Good 4 to Good 3 at 1.53pm after the running of this race.

Race 4 - UCI Stakes (Listed) - 1800m:

Thunderdome - connections advised would be ridden back from the wide draw; settled in a mid-field position and raced three wide without cover. A post race veterinary examination detected a degree of internal exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage and a veterinary clearance is required prior to the gelding racing again.

Extra Brut - connections advised would be ridden quieter from the wide gate; settled just behind mid-field position. Brushed with Sikorsky approaching the winning post due to both horses shifting ground.

Resurge - after being slow to begin was then hampered when tightened for room by Into The Oblivion, which began awkwardly and shifted out.

Farooq - began awkwardly. Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Eased passing the 300m after laying in and making contact with Not A Single Cent.

Savvy Oak (NZ) - began awkwardly. Shifted in abruptly approaching the 300m before being straightened by its rider.

Pieropan - began awkwardly.

Exclusively Ours - hung outwards in the straight.

Ventura Storm (IRE) - began awkwardly and lost ground. Over-raced in the early stages. Held up from the 500m before gaining clear running passing the 200m.

Trap For Fools - began awkwardly. Apprentice Ben Allen was fined the sum of $750 under the provisions of AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip nine times prior to the 100m, which is four times more than permitted. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his record under this rule.

Grunt (NZ) - rider Mark Zahra reported that the horse laid out throughout and felt uncomfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 6 - Gilgai Stakes (Group 2) - 1200m:

Burning Front - underwent a veterinary examination after arriving on course and was passed suitable to race. Began awkwardly. Apprentice Ben Allen reported that the gelding, which was first up today, slipped on jumping and is better suited over further. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

First Among Equals - slow to begin. Rider Dean Yendall reported that the gelding failed to travel throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a slow recovery and a throat abnormality and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Race 7 - The Bart Cummings (Group 3) - 2500m:

Correct weight was delayed when Michael Walker, rider of Jaameh (IRE) (second placegetter), lodged an objection against Avilius (GB) being declared the winner alleging interference inside the 100m. On the evidence it was established that near the 50m Avilius (GB) laid in towards Jaameh (IRE) which shifted out slightly resulting in both horses brushing. Stewards could not be satisfied that this incident warranted a reversal of the placings and therefore the objection was dismissed and correct weight was declared.

Harrison (GB) - connections advised it was the intention to lead; led. Rider Andrew Mallyon reported that his mount raced keenly with the blinkers on for the first time and he has recommended to connections to remove them. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Hush Writer (JPN) - connections advised they would attempt to ride with cover; settled in a handy position with cover. Over-raced in the middle stages.

Yogi - tightened in onto Jaameh (IRE) by Wheal Leisure near the 2000m.

Northwest Passage - steadied to avoid the heels of Avilius (GB) which shifted in when not clear near the 150m.

Our Venice Beach (IRE) - a post race veterinary examination revealed the horse had sustained an abrasion to its near foreleg.

Megablast (NZ) - rider John Allen reported that his mount raced keenly in the early stages then failed to respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Jye McNeil (Wheal Leisure) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 2000m when not clear of Yogi taking that gelding in and tightening the running of Jaameh (IRE). Jye McNeil had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight October 14th and to expire at midnight October 22nd, a total of nine race meetings (two metropolitan, seven provincial). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea and excellent record and that the carelessness was in the mid-range.

Glyn Schofield (Avilius (GB)) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 150m when not clear of Northwest Passage resulting in that gelding being steadied to avoid the heels of Avilius (GB). Glyn Schofield had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight October 13th and to expire at midnight October 22nd, a total of ten race meetings (two metropolitan, eight provincial). Gaelic Dream - became unbalanced approaching the 200m when Verry Elleegant (NZ) attempted a narrow run. Rider Jordan Childs reported that his mount would be better suited on a track with more give and did not feel comfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Mark Zahra (Krone) - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the carelessness being that near the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Dark Confidant resulting in that filly being checked when tightened for room out onto Pierro Belle.
