Curatolo to ride Forever Young two kilos over in Committee’s Prize

French jockey Ryan Curatolo will be allowed to ride the Kuah Cheng Tee-trained Forever Young two kilos over in the $200,000 Group 3 Committee’s Prize (1600m) this Sunday.

The Singapore Turf Club’s Stipendiary Stewards department has granted the special permission in light of the high number of horses carrying light weights (13 of the 17 entries at 53kgs or below). Forever Young is handicapped at 51kgs.

Chief Stipendiary Steward Peter Chadwick said the favourable response to Kuah’s request might not apply to only Forever Young.

“CT Kuah approached us and asked if we could allow Ryan to ride Forever Young two kilos over in the Committee’s Prize. Given that there were indeed a lot of lightweights in the race and we don’t have a large pool of lightweight riders, we decided to agree to his request,” said Mr Chadwick.

“In a spirit of fairness, other trainers or owners can make similar requests for that race by Wednesday (before declaration) if they want, and we will consider them on a case-by-case basis.”

Kuah was thankful to the Club for being understanding and flexible.

“It’s unfortunate Ryan could not ride Forever Young in the Fortune Bowl as he decided to ride Infantry instead, but he’s always been riding my horse in work and his barrier trials then,” said the Singaporean trainer.

“When I found out Glen Boss was taking over Infantry in the same race, I immediately asked Ryan to ride Forever Young as he knows the horse the best.

“But when the handicaps came out, my horse got 51kgs. Ryan cannot make this weight.

“I could have looked for a lightweight jockey but I would rather have a jockey who knows my horse better, and that’s why I asked the Stewards if it was possible to let Ryan ride two kilos over.

“I thank the Club for being lenient in this particular case, and it would be good if all trainers could be given the same treatment.”
