Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman will ride the Anthony Freedman trained Santa Ana Lane in the HK$16m, Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize (1200m) on FED Champions Day at Sha Tin on April 28th.
The stable advised on Tuesday that Bowman will replace Mark Zahra who was suspended by Racing NSW stewards' for causing a fall in Fernhill Handicap at Randwick on Saturday which brought down Glyn Schofield and Andrew Adkins. While Schofield escaped injury, Adkins is recovering in hospital from a number of fractures to his face and back.
Zahra was suspended from Tuesday, April 23rd until Sunday June 2nd, plus fined $3,800. Zahra is appealing the suspension.
While Bowman was also suspended in the same race for careless riding unrelated to the fall, his suspension finishes on Saturday, April 27th allowing him to ride on the 28th.
Bowman knows Sha Tin well after not only completing a Club contract, but also flying in for numerous assignments on the major racedays. For Champions Day he most recently won the 2017 Chairman's Sprint Prize on Lucky Bubbles and the 2016 QEII Cup on Werther.
The leading jockey will also partner the Hong Kong Derby winner Furore in the FWD QEII Cup (2000m) on the Champions Day programme.
Santa Ana Lane, the winner of the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes over 1200m by 3 1/2L on April 8th, worked at Flemington on Tuesday morning and is due to fly to Hong Kong on Monday arriving at 11.30pm.
