Tom Chatfeild-Roberts wins The Prince's Countryside Fund Charity Race
25 Nov 2017 | Ascot Racecourse

Tom Chatfeild-Roberts won The Prince's Countryside Fund Charity Race supported by Tindle Newspapers at Ascot Racecourse on Friday.

Chatfeild-Roberts rode the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained Golden Wedding, who ran well from start to finish. The race took place over seven furlongs of the National Hunt Course on good to soft ground.

HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall awarded Chatfeild-Roberts with his prize at Ascot this afternoon.

Chatfeild-Roberts has been involved with horses from an early age and recently qualified from the Royal Veterinary College. He has a keen interest in racing, having worked in both Flat and Jump racing yards. He has point-to-pointed for the last six seasons and ridden over 20 winners.

He said: "It was a great thrill to get past the winning post at Ascot in front. The race was good fun, but we went a little bit quicker than I'm used to. It was a great experience and a day I will never forget."

Michael Owen, who was making his race debut, finished a close second aboard the Tom Dascombe-trained Calder Prince, having only ridden a horse for the first time this year.

Sheikh Fahad Al Thani came home in third place, having first ridden in a charity race in 2015. He has had three winners since, but was unable to add to that total today. International Event rider, Harry Meade, finished sixth.

Between them, the 10 riders have raised in excess of £40,000 through sponsorship in aid of The Prince's Countryside Fund.

The Prince's Countryside Fund was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2010 to help secure a brighter future for British farmers and the countryside.

Each year the Fund provides up to £1.2 million in grants to projects across the UK as well as running its own initiatives such as The Prince's Farm Resilience Programme.
