Race: 1 (019) MAOMING HANDICAP Class 4 1200 m
After leaving the Parade Ring but prior to entering the track, RICHCITY FORTUNE became fractious, resulting in T Berry being dislodged without incident.
Shortly after the start, TELECOM SUN, which was being steadied to obtain cover, raced tight between RICHCITY FORTUNE and MASSIVE POWER.
Throughout the race, LAUGH OUT LOUD travelled wide and without cover.
The performance of TELECOM SUN, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, TELECOM SUN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
K C Leung (MASSIVE POWER) was warned against the practice of raising his whip arm above the height of his shoulder.
After the race, T Berry stated that it had been intended for RICHCITY FORTUNE to lead if possible, however, just prior to the start being effected his mount became fractious which resulted in RICHCITY FORTUNE beginning only fairly. A veterinary inspection of RICHCITY FORTUNE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, K Teetan reported that BONUS KING was unbalanced throughout the race and particularly so when under pressure rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight. He said for this reason he eased the horse down over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of BONUS KING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of BONUS KING, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BONUS KING will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
SUPER EURO STAR and CREAM BRULEE were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (020) ZHAOQING HANDICAP Class 5 1000 m

RAICHU shifted out at the start and bumped HAYMAKER.
GLORY HORSIE and UNLEASHED DRAGON bumped shortly after the start.
Near the 450 Metres, HAYMAKER was momentarily crowded for room outside UNLEASHED DRAGON when improving into tight running outside that horse.
A veterinary inspection of IDYLLIC WIND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SEVEN LUCK and HAPPY SOUND were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (021) ZHANJIANG HANDICAP Class 4 1600 m
MIDNITE PROMISE began awkwardly.
HIT A HOME RUN (Apprentice M F Poon) was badly held up for clear running from after the 400 Metres until after the 300 Metres as Apprentice Poon attempted to improve into tight running between MY GIFT and EVEREST which was not available. Apprentice Poon was spoken to regarding this matter.
At the 300 Metres, HIT A HOME RUN was then shifted in to obtain clear running.
Throughout the race, MY GIFT travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, Apprentice H N Wong stated that he had been asked to try and lead on UNIQUE HAPPIEST, however, if another runner was intent on leading, then it would be acceptable for him to take a sit off that horse. He said despite the race being run at a very slow tempo in the early stages, UNIQUE HAPPIEST did not show as much early speed as he anticipated and, despite riding his mount along for some distance, he was not able to cross runners to his inside. He said he would have had to make considerable use of UNIQUE HAPPIEST in an endeavour to clear runners to his inside and as he was reluctant to do that in the early stages, this therefore allowed BEST EFFORT to improve its position to the inside of UNIQUE HAPPIEST. He added as he formed the view that that horse would improve its position and obtain the lead, he elected to continue to race outside BEST EFFORT and shift in with that horse as it crossed to the rail.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of EVEREST, S Clipperton stated that the horse was not suited by the slow tempo of today’s race in the early stages. He said in its races EVEREST had been able to relax when covered up by other horses soon after the start. He said however today when the leaders took some time to cross EVEREST and provide the horse with cover, EVEREST travelled keenly and would not settle as he had hoped. He added after obtaining cover approaching the first turn EVEREST was not able to quicken when the tempo of the race increased after the 600 Metres. He said after this EVEREST finished off the race only one-paced. A veterinary inspection of EVEREST immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned regarding the performance of AMBITIOUS HEART, Z Purton stated that the horse raced disappointingly. He said unlike in a number of starts when AMBITIOUS HEART was able to obtain cover in the early stages, in today’s race it took a considerable distance for the leaders to cross AMBITIOUS HEART to provide his mount with cover. He said it was not until near the 900 Metres that BEST EFFORT crossed AMBITIOUS HEART and he felt that this may have had some bearing on the horse’s performance. He added he also felt that racing over 1600 Metres first up today may also have been a contributing factor to the horse’s failure to finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of AMBITIOUS HEART immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
AMBITIOUS HEART, HIT A HOME RUN and INDUSTRIALIST WAY were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (022) ZHUHAI HANDICAP Class 5 1400 m
On entering the track, FAITHFUL BOY lost its right front plate. On arrival at the barriers. FAITHFUL BOY was replated and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said that the horse was suitable to race.
STRIKING STAR began only fairly.
FAITHFUL BOY shifted in at the start and bumped FURIOUS PEGASUS which became unbalanced and in turn shifted in and bumped WHISTLE UP.
From a wide barrier, JOLLY AMBER was steadied and shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
In the early stages, WINGOLD got its head up when being steadied to obtain cover. WINGOLD however was left racing wide and without cover after the 1100 Metres, continued to travel keenly and raced with its head on the side. After the 1000 Metres, WINGOLD was allowed to improve its position, however, continued to race wide and without cover and travelled keenly throughout the middle stages.
After the 1300 Metres, STARRY STARLIES proved difficult to settle when being steadied to obtain cover. After obtaining cover behind WINGOLD after the 1100 Metres, STARRY STARLIES then continued to prove very difficult to settle and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of WINGOLD near the 1000 Metres. After this, STARRY STARLIES continued to prove difficult to settle and shifted out away from the heels of WINGOLD, resulting in STARRY STARLIES racing four wide and without cover until after the 800 Metres at which time the horse was able to resume its position behind WINGOLD.
For a considerable distance after the 1100 Metres, STRIKING STAR proved very difficult to settle and got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of LE PEGASE.
GOOD METHOD was unable to obtain clear running from after entering the Straight until approaching the 200 Metres.
When questioned, Apprentice H N Wong stated that, from the outside barrier, it was felt that FAITHFUL BOY would not have sufficient speed to cross runners to its inside to take up a forward position due to today’s race being run over 1400 Metres which is short of the distances at which the horse performed best in the past. He said he was therefore asked to shift FAITHFUL BOY across behind runners in the early stages. He added it was anticipated that the race would be run at a stronger tempo than what eventuated as the race was slowly run in the early stages. He said this resulted in FAITHFUL BOY proving difficult to settle after the 1000 Metres and getting its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of FURIOUS PEGASUS.
A veterinary inspection of FURIOUS PEGASUS immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
FURIOUS PEGASUS, TELECOM BOOM and GOOD METHOD were sent for sampling.

Race: 5 (023) SHENZHEN HANDICAP Class 4 1400 m

STAR OF HONG KONG lost ground when crowded for room on jumping between RED ELYSEES and SILVERFIELD which was taken in by BEAUT BEAUT which initially got its head on the side and shifted in away from MORETHANLUCKY and then raced tight inside that horse. After this, SILVERFIELD and BEAUT BEAUT, from wide barriers, were shifted across behind runners.
When being steadied to obtain cover after the 1300 Metres, BEAUT BEAUT got its head up for some distance and proved difficult to settle.
A veterinary inspection of STAR OF HONG KONG immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of STAR OF HONG KONG, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, STAR OF HONG KONG will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of THE FULL BLOOM and BEAUT BEAUT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
MORETHANLUCKY and A BEAUTIFUL were sent for sampling.

Race: 6 (024) SHANTOU HANDICAP Class 4 1200 m

STARLOT was slow to begin.
As the start was effected, HEARTS KEEPER lifted its front feet and lost ground.
Making the turn approaching the 700 Metres, HEARTS KEEPER raced tight inside STARLOT which got its head on the side and lay in momentarily.
AMAZING MOMENT was held up for clear running from on straightening until passing the 300 Metres at which time AMAZING MOMENT shifted out and brushed STARTLING POWER.
After the 200 Metres, MASSIVE MOVE shifted in, resulting in its rider, Apprentice M F Poon, having to stop riding and straighten.
Throughout the race, STARTLING POWER travelled wide and without cover.
A veterinary inspection of DEJA VU and STARLOT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of HEARTS KEEPER immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being allowed to race again, HEARTS KEEPER will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
STAR SUPERIOR, AMAZING MOMENT and STARTLING POWER were sent for sampling.

Race: 7 (025) THE KWANGTUNG HANDICAP CUP (HANDICAP) Class 1 1400 m
WINNER’S WAY began awkwardly.
From the outside barrier, HORSE OF FORTUNE was steadied in the early stages and shifted across to obtain cover.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, ROMANTIC TOUCH failed to muster speed.
When questioned regarding the performance of MAGIC LEGEND, T Berry stated that after the horse ran home late in its race last week over 1200 Metres, it was felt that the step up to 1400 Metres for today’s race would suit MAGIC LEGEND. He said he was asked to ride the horse positively in the early stages and obtain the lead and then to slow the pace in the middle stages if possible as it was felt that MAGIC LEGEND would not have the same turn of foot as horses such as WINNER’S WAY and JOLLY BANNER and therefore it was felt that in the best interests of MAGIC LEGEND not to have to give those horses a start. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode MAGIC LEGEND positively in the early stages and although he had to make some use of the horse he was able to steady the tempo in the middle stages and MAGIC LEGEND travelled comfortably in the lead. He said after WINNER’S WAY improved to the outside of MAGIC LEGEND rounding the Home Turn, MAGIC LEGEND came under pressure and then did not finish off the race as anticipated. He added he was not able to offer any reason for the disappointing performance of MAGIC LEGEND other than the horse was backing up over 1400 Metres after competing last week. A veterinary inspection of MAGIC LEGEND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
JOLLY BANNER and WINNER’S WAY were sent for sampling.

Race: 8 (026) GUANGZHOU HANDICAP Class 3 1600 m
After being placed in the barriers, HO HO FEEL became fractious and reared. HO HO FEEL was removed from the barriers and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, HO HO FEEL will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
GORGEOUS AGAIN began awkwardly and bumped the inside of its barrier gate on jumping which resulted in its rider, J Moreira, becoming unbalanced.
HAPPILABABY shifted out at the start and bumped HO HO FEEL. Then from the outside barrier, HO HO FEEL was shifted across behind runners.
Also from the outside barrier, FRIENDS OF NANJING was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Making the turn after the 1000 Metres, WHITE MAGIC got its head up when being checked away from the heels of GRAND HARBOUR (W M Lai) which slowed the tempo. RENAISSANCE ART, which was following WHITE MAGIC, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse in consequence. At the rear of the field, both HAPPILABABY (H W Lai) and HO HO FEEL were checked away from the heels of AMAZING AGILITY and FRIENDS OF NANJING respectively. W M Lai was reprimanded and warned against the practice of excessively slowing the tempo in races. When checked away from the heels of FRIENDS OF NANJING, HO HO FEEL shifted out abruptly away from the heels of that horse, raced ungenerously for a short distance and afterwards was left racing wide and without cover until near the 700 Metres. H W Lai stated that after this incident HAPPILABABY came off the bridle and then did not travel comfortably. He said in particular HAPPILABABY became unbalanced rounding the Home Turn and as he had concerns regarding the horse’s action, he eased it down over the final 300 Metres. A veterinary inspection of HAPPILABABY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of HAPPILABABY, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPILABABY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Near the 300 Metres, WHITE MAGIC was momentarily crowded for room between WINWIN RUBY and SERGEANT TITANIUM which shifted out.
Passing the 150 Metres, WHITE MAGIC was steadied when again crowded for room between WINWIN RUBY and SERGEANT TITANIUM, both of which shifted a minimal amount of ground.

When being steadied to obtain cover approaching and passing the 1000 Metre, G-ONE LOVER got its head up on a number of occasions.
An inquiry into the reason for OUR FOLKS being hampered near the 850 Metres was adjourned until a date to be fixed as H W Lai, the rider of G-ONE LOVER, was transported to hospital due to a subsequent incident.
K Teetan (OUR FOLKS) was charged with breaching Rule 100(1)] of careless riding in that near the 650 Metres he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount from shifting in which resulted in ROYAL MOJITO being checked when crowded inside OUR FOLKS. K Teetan pleaded not guilty to the charge. After considering further submissions from Jockey Teetan, the Stewards formed the view that he should be afforded the benefit of the doubt in respect of OUR FOLKS being steadied away from the heels of G-ONE LOVER at the relevant time and therefore the charge of careless riding issued against Jockey Teetan was not sustained. However, K Teetan was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes sufficient endeavours to prevent his mounts from shifting ground and causing interference.
After the 600 Metres, RADIANT TREASURE got its head on the side and lay out towards the heels of PINGWU SPARK, resulting in RADIANT TREASURE being awkwardly placed inside that horse.
An inquiry into the reason for H W Lai being dislodged from G-ONE LOVER near the 550 Metres was adjourned until a date to be fixed due to H W Lai being transported to hospital. When H W Lai was dislodged as a result of G-ONE LOVER blundering, OUR FOLKS, PRESIDENTPARAMOUNT and ROYAL MOJITO were all severely checked. After this, ROYAL MOJITO was eased down. A veterinary inspection of ROYAL MOJITO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Having regard to ROYAL MOJITO’s beaten margin, the Stewards ruled that the horse must trial competitively and be subjected to an official veterinary examination prior to being permitted to race again. After the race, APOLLO’S CHOICE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said the horse had sustained a small wound above the inside of the left hock. A veterinary inspection of G-ONE LOVER immediately following the race found that horse to have sustained small wounds inside the right front cannon and the right hock. Before being allowed to race again, G-ONE LOVER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
PINGWU SPARK and MYTHICAL EMPEROR were sent for sampling.

Also making the turn after the 700 Metres, HARBOUR ALERT commenced to prove difficult to settle and was checked away from the heels of WINNING VANGOGH.
ALL BEST FRIENDS travelled wide and without cover until near the 600 Metres.
Passing the 500 Metres, STAR OF YAN OI attempted to shift out from behind JOYFUL MOMENTS and bumped KING MORTAR (K Teetan). After this, STAR OF YAN OI was awkwardly placed close to the heels of JOYFUL MOMENTS. In this incident, K Teetan’s right elbow briefly extended away from his body and made contact with the head of STAR OF YAN OI. In the circumstances, the Stewards did not believe that the contact between Jockey Teetan’s elbow and STAR OF YAN OI was such that a charge of improper riding should be issued, however, K Teetan was severely reprimanded and warned against allowing any part of his body making contact with another horse or rider during a race.
S Clipperton (ARIZONA BLIZZARD) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of STAR OF YAN OI, causing that horse to be hampered and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled outside ARIZONA BLIZZARD and to the inside of ALL BEST FRIENDS. S Clipperton was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 13 September 2017 and to expire on Sunday, 17 September 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account S Clipperton’s good race riding record.
After the race, K C Leung was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of JOYFUL MOMENTS. He said the horse travelled reasonably well with cover, however, gave only a brief response in the early part of the Straight before weakening. He added however that, in his view, JOYFUL MOMENTS would take improvement out of today’s race. A veterinary inspection of JOYFUL MOMENTS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of STAR OF YAN OI immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of KING MORTAR immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, KING MORTAR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
