Race: 1 (011) CHEUNG HONG HANDICAP Class 5 1200 m
When in the Parade Ring, SPARKLING TALENT became fractious and kicked a rail. On arrival at the Start, SPARKLING TALENT was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said that the horse had sustained a cut to the inside of the right hind fetlock and accordingly was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, SPARKLING TALENT was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, SPARKLING TALENT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
SKY TREASURE, which was very fractious in the barriers, put its head down on a number of occasions and as the start was effected again got its head down and consequently was slow to begin.
JIMSON THE FAMOUS was slow to begin.
ROCKET LET WIN began only fairly and then lost ground when crowded for room between CATCHMEIFYOUCAN and SPICY DOUBLE which shifted out.
Shortly after the start, WINNING BOY was momentarily eased away from the heels of A FAST ONE due to both horses shifting ground.
Making the turn near the 1000 Metres, A FAST ONE, which was left racing wide and without cover outside the lead, was steadied to obtain a trailing position behind CATCHMEIFYOUCAN.
Passing the 700 Metres, WINNING BOY got its head up when awkwardly placed behind OUR HONOUR.
Making the turn near the 550 Metres, ROCKET LET WIN raced tight between JIMSON THE FAMOUS and WINNING BOY which shifted out after being awkwardly placed close to the heels of OUR HONOUR.
After initially attempting to obtain a run between CATCHMEIFYOUCAN and FORTUNE BROTHERS early in the Straight, GREAT TOPLIGHT was shifted to the outside of CATCHMEIFYOUCAN approaching the 200 Metres due to that run closing as a result of both horses shifting ground.
After being positioned to improve to the outside of CATCHMEIFYOUCAN, GREAT TOPLIGHT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of CATCHMEIFYOUCAN for a short distance after the 200 Metres as a result of that horse drifting out under pressure.
Approaching the 100 Metres, A FAST ONE was brushed by GREAT TOPLIGHT which shifted out and then near the 75 Metres was bumped by GREAT TOPLIGHT. In this incident, SPICY DOUBLE shifted out away from A FAST ONE and hampered OUR HONOUR.
When questioned regarding the poor performance of SKY TREASURE, J Moreira stated that after being placed in the barriers his mount was very fractious and as the start was effected lost ground after getting its head down simultaneously as the start being effected. He said in the early stages he placed SKY TREASURE under heavy pressure to improve its position, however, despite being hard ridden throughout the early and middle stages, SKY TREASURE would not stretch out and refused to improve its position from at the tail of the field. He said after the 600 Metres he was able to make some ground on SKY TREASURE whilst continuing to ride his mount aggressively and he shifted the horse to the outside of runners to see if it would finish off the race in a more genuine fashion. He added, despite this, SKY TREASURE continued to be reluctant to race competitively and did not improve its position at any stage of the race. A veterinary inspection of SKY TREASURE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. Both the barrier manners and the performance of SKY TREASURE, a favourite for tonight’s race, were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SKY TREASURE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
SKY TREASURE, CATCHMEIFYOUCAN and GREAT TOPLIGHT were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (012) HING MAN HANDICAP Class 4 1650 m
PLAY IT began awkwardly.
THE SYLPH began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped PO CHING TREASURE.
From the outside barrier, CITY WINNER was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After the 1300 Metres, FINE WITH ME was awkwardly placed inside the heels of MY BLESSING when being steadied to allow that horse to cross.
After the 900 Metres, HAPPY ROCKY was shifted out and ridden along to improve its position and after this raced wide and without cover.
Passing the 700 Metres, FINE WITH ME was momentarily awkwardly placed close to the heels of MY BLESSING.
Approaching and passing the 400 Metres, THE SYLPH was reluctant to maintain its position when racing in restricted room between HAPPY ROCKY and FINE WITH ME which got its head on the side and lay out towards the heels of BO DUKE. Then rounding the Home Turn, THE SYLPH was steadied away from the heels of FINE WITH ME (U Rispoli) which shifted out when not quite clear. U Rispoli was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Approaching the 150 Metres, HAPPY ROCKY raced tight between THE SYLPH and PLAY IT which shifted in.
When questioned, Trainer K W Lui stated that he instructed U Rispoli to ensure that FINE WITH ME began well and it was anticipated that in a small field the horse would be able to obtain a position in about midfield. U Rispoli stated that after beginning well he commenced to shift across closer to the rail shortly after the start, however, when there were a number of horses positioned to his inside, he elected to continue forward of those horses in order to then take hold of FINE WITH ME and allow MY BLESSING to cross. He said this resulted in FINE WITH ME racing in a position further forward than generally has been the case. Mr Lui stated that due to the circumstances of tonight’s race FINE WITH ME assumed a more prominent position than he expected and it would be his intention for the horse to be ridden more conservatively in future which is in keeping with the manner in which it has been ridden with success in the past.
PLAY IT, BO DUKE and THE SYLPH were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (013) HUNG FUK HANDICAP Class 5 1650 m
GOLD VELVET was withdrawn on 5.9.17 by order of the Stewards (family bereavement).
ISLAND FLYER was slow to begin.
HIGH SPEED METRO was crowded for room shortly after the start between SPEEDY WALLY and ATOMIC BLAST which, after initially shifting in of its own accord, was taken in by BEST JADE TRIUMPH which was taken in by WINNINGLI which shifted ground on jumping before being directed out by its rider. After this, HIGH SPEED METRO and BEST JADE TRIUMPH were shifted across behind runners.
From the outside barrier, NO LAUGHING MATTER was shifted across behind runners shortly after the start.
Approaching the 1550 Metres, ATOMIC BLAST shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of ISLAND FLYER.
For a considerable distance after the 1100 Metres, SPEEDY WALLY commenced to race keenly and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DON WONGCHOY.

Approaching the 700 Metres, DON WONGCHOY was taken in to a position three wide by PLANET GIANT which shifted away from the rail.
DON WONGCHOY made the Home Turn awkwardly.
VICTORY FOLLOW ME had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
Approaching the 100 Metres, HIGH SPEED METRO raced tight inside WINNINGLI when improving into a narrow run inside that horse.
W M Lai, the rider of NO LAUGHING MATTER, which finished last, was fined the sum of $5,000 for using the whip to excess on a horse out of contention and for raising his whip arm above the height of his shoulder on a number of occasions
A veterinary inspection of DON WONGCHOY and NO LAUGHING MATTER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SPEEDY WALLY and VICTORY FOLLOW ME were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (014) OI MAN HANDICAP Class 4 1000 m
HAPPY OUT THERE and SANGRIA began only fairly.
CALIFORNIA ASPAR was crowded for room on jumping between BEAUTY CONNECTION and FLYING MONKEY which shifted out. In this incident, CALIFORNIA ASPAR bumped BEAUTY CONNECTION which was then crowded for room inside OCEAN ROAR.
Near the 950 Metres, BEAUTY CONNECTION was steadied away from the heels of OCEAN ROAR (Apprentice H T Mo) which shifted in. Apprentice Mo was advised to exercise more care.
Near the 850 Metres, BEAUTY CONNECTION and TRENDIFUL were steadied to obtain a position closer to the rail after being left racing wide.
Approaching the 700 Metres, FLYING MONKEY shifted out towards the heels of OCEAN ROAR which was shifting in marginally. This resulted in FLYING MONKEY being very awkwardly placed close to the heels of OCEAN ROAR passing the 700 Metres and shifting in abruptly and bumping BUDDY BUNDY which became unbalanced. Apprentice Mo was advised that whilst FLYING MONKEY had contributed to this incident by initially shifting out towards the heels of OCEAN ROAR, nonetheless he must ensure that he is properly clear of other runners when shifting ground.
After the 600 Metres, FLYING MONKEY was left racing wide and without cover.
Making the turn near the 550 Metres, TRENDIFUL momentarily raced tight inside the heels of BEAUTY CONNECTION.
At the entrance to the Straight, FLYING MONKEY was brushed by DR RACE which shifted out to obtain clear running.
Approaching the 200 Metres, BUDDY BUNDY, which was inclined to lay in, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FLYING GODSPELL which shifted out.
Close to the finishing line, HAPPY OUT THERE became unbalanced.
After the race, N Callan reported that CALIFORNIA ASPAR made an abnormal respiratory noise. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA ASPAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of BUDDY BUNDY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
FLYING MONKEY, DR RACE and OCEAN ROAR were sent for sampling.

Race: 5 (015) SHEUNG TAK HANDICAP Class 4 1200 m
FISH N’ CHIPS shifted in at the start and bumped OUR HERO which in turn shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of FOREVER FUN.
From wide barriers, STARLIGHT and FORMULA GALORE were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
For some distance approaching the 800 Metres, OUR HERO was checked away from the heels of LONDON MASTER.
Approaching the 800 Metres, FORMULA GALORE commenced to travel keenly and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of FOREVER FUN which throughout the race travelled wide and without cover.
FOX SUNTER got its head on the side and lay out rounding the Home Turn.
LONDON MASTER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FOREVER FUN in the early part of the Straight and near the 250 Metres was shifted to the inside of that horse in an endeavour to improve into tight running between FOREVER FUN and OUR HERO. In this incident, LONDON MASTER and OUR HERO bumped, causing both horses to become unbalanced and LONDON MASTER to be steadied when disappointed for running between FOREVER FUN and OUR HERO.
When questioned, M L Yeung stated that he had been asked to take up a forward position on FISH N’ CHIPS but not necessarily to lead. He said after riding his mount along in the early stages to cross runners to his inside, he was able to obtain the lead after the 1000 Metres but was immediately pressured by PHANTOM FALCON which improved to his outside. He said PHANTOM FALCON continued to race on terms with FISH N’ CHIPS and as his mount has previously been shown to be suspect at 1200 Metres on turf, he elected to allow PHANTOM FALCON to cross rather than continue to attempt to hold that horse out. He said he felt that this would provide FISH N’ CHIPS with the best opportunity to finish off the race. He added after being crossed by PHANTOM FALCON after the 500 Metres, FISH N’ CHIPS settled well and after giving a limited response in the early part of the Straight then weakened over the latter stages of the race.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that FOX SUNTER had bled from both nostrils.
FOX SUNTER and PHANTOM FALCON were sent for sampling.

Race: 6 (016) THE COMMUNITY CHEST CUP (HANDICAP) Class 3 1200 m

PEACE N PROSPERITY was crowded for room on jumping between GENERAL IRON and I’M A WITNESS which shifted out.
DOLLAR REWARD and PRIMERO bumped at the start, causing both horses to become unbalanced. PRIMERO then shifted out and bumped CHEER WIN which was racing tight inside SHANGHAI MASTER. A short distance later, DOLLAR REWARD became badly unbalanced and was steadied when crowded for room between BRAVE LEGEND and PRIMERO which continued to be unbalanced when racing tight inside CHEER WIN.
From the outside barriers, SUPER LEADER and STARLIT KNIGHT were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Near the 1150 Metres, CHEER WIN was momentarily steadied away from the heels of SHANGHAI MASTER which got its head on the side and shifted in away from POWERMAX.
Passing the 1000 Metres, POWERMAX got its head up momentarily when racing outside the heels of SHANGHAI MASTER which, after shifting in, was corrected by its rider. After this, POWERMAX travelled wide and without cover.
Passing the 50 Metres, SUPER LEADER was shifted out away from the heels of POWERMAX which drifted out under pressure.
After the race, J Moreira reported that CHEER WIN was making an abnormal respiratory noise during and after the race. A subsequent endoscopic examination confirmed the horse to be a "roarer”.
DOLLAR REWARD, BRAVE LEGEND and POWERMAX were sent for sampling.

Race: 7 (017) SHUN LEE HANDICAP Class 3 1650 m
SKY KING began only fairly and then despite being hard ridden throughout the race was detached from the main body of the field. A veterinary inspection of SKY KING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of SKY KING, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SKY KING will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
UNICORN was slow to begin.
From a wide barrier, MIGHTY BOY was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
After the 1300 Metres, IMPERIAL SEAL was left racing three wide and without cover and was consequently allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead near the 900 Metres. A veterinary inspection of IMPERIAL SEAL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, Z Purton stated that after having to make use of IMPERIAL SEAL to overcome being caught wide and without cover, his mount was therefore not able to finish off the race and gave ground in the Straight.
Passing the 750 Metres, UNICORN went amiss in the left front fetlock and was retired from the race. SKY KING, which was following, was shifted out abruptly away from that horse.
KIRAM had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
THUNDER STOMP and KIRAM were sent for sampling. Samples were also taken from UNICORN.

Race: 8 (018) YAU OI HANDICAP Class 2 1200 m
VERBINSKY was withdrawn on 5.9.17 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter HEROIC GURU (Apprentice H N Wong). Before being allowed to race again, VERBINSKY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
COUNTRY MELODY and DUKEDOM bumped at the start.
MR GENUINE and HEROIC GURU were steadied shortly after the start and shifted across behind runners.
A short distance after the start, LUCKY EVER was awkwardly placed outside the heels of ALMABABY which shifted out.
Making the first turn near the 1000 Metres, JETWINGS was hampered when crowded for room between COUNTRY MELODY which shifted out momentarily and PERPETUAL JOYANCE which got its head on the side and shifted in away from FLYING TOURBILLON.
Approaching the 800 Metres, PERPETUAL JOYANCE shifted in after being awkwardly placed close to the heels of FLYING TOURBILLON and hampered COUNTRY MELODY. JETWINGS and MR GENUINE, which were following, were also hampered in consequence.
Passing the 150 Metres, DUKEDOM was shifted out away from the heels of LUCKY DOLLAR.
Apprentice M F Poon (MR GENUINE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in under pressure when not clear of LUCKY EVER which contributed to that horse being severely checked between MR GENUINE and PERPETUAL JOYANCE which shifted out marginally. Apprentice Poon was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 20 September 2017 and to expire on Monday, 25 September 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into consideration that the interference to LUCKY EVER had been exacerbated by a marginal shift out from PERPETUAL JOYANCE to the inside of LUCKY EVER.
When questioned regarding his riding of MR GENUINE in the Straight, Apprentice M F Poon stated that he had been instructed to make the Home Turn with cover if possible and immediately shift MR GENUINE to the outside of runners to finish off the race. He said it was explained to him that MR GENUINE does not possess a sustained sprint and therefore obtaining cover rounding the Home Turn would provide the horse with the best opportunity to finish off the race. He said after following LUCKY EVER into the Home Straight, he shifted MR GENUINE to the outside of that horse, balanced it up and then commenced to ride it vigorously. He said his riding of MR GENUINE was inconvenienced by the horse wanting to shift in under pressure which resulted in him having to stop riding and straighten MR GENUINE after the 100 Metres. He added he then attempted to continue riding MR GENUINE out, however, over the concluding stages he was again aware that the horse was shifting inwards and therefore attempted to correct MR GENUINE by applying pressure on the left rein to ensure that the horse did not continue to shift in towards FLYING TOURBILLON. He said this resulted in him becoming unbalanced and not being able to fully ride the horse out to the best of his ability over the concluding stages. Apprentice Poon was advised that he must ride his mounts with sufficient vigour and purpose to ensure that his riding is not open to query. Apprentice Poon, in the presence of his allocated trainer, Mr D J Hall, was also shown the video of his riding out of the horse over the concluding stages.
A veterinary inspection of JETWINGS immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
A veterinary inspection of VICTORY MARVEL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CONVINCIBLE and ALMABABY were sent for sampling.
