N Callan (AMAZING ALWAYS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that over the concluding stages he permitted his mount to shift out across the rightful running of YOUNG DREAMER, causing that horse to be hampered and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. N Callan was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 23 April 2017 and to expire on Thursday, 27 April 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). When questioned, S Clipperton (COOL AND NEAT) stated that in the early stages he was able to obtain a trialing position behind FLYING MACHINE three wide. He said considering that COOL AND NEAT had drawn barrier 10, he was comfortable with this position and intended to maintain the position behind FLYING MACHINE in the early and middle stages. He said however that after the 1300 Metres FLYING MACHINE was steadied in an attempt to obtain cover which had the effect of coming back onto COOL AND NEAT. He said as the tempo of the race at this time was not fast, he formed the view that the race may develop into a “sit sprint” which would not be in COOL AND NEAT’s best interests, therefore he elected to allow COOL AND NEAT to improve around FLYING MACHINE and was able to obtain a position behind the leaders one horse off the rail when ASHKIYR shifted in to race on the rail passing the 1000 Metres.

A short distance after the start, UNBEATABLE GUTS blundered badly when crowded for room between HAPPY AND HEALTHY and WINGOLD which continued to race tight outside SPICY KAKA. When UNBEATABLE GUTS blundered, its rider, Apprentice H T Mo, was dislodged. As the Stewards were satisfied that incident occurred as a result of both WINGOLD and HAPPY AND HEALTHY shifting ground, no further action was taken, however, Apprentice Poon was told to do what he can in similar circumstances to relieve any tightening to other runners. After this incident, Apprentice Mo was examined by the Club’s doctors and passed fit to fulfil his remaining race riding engagements. K C Leung (THOR THE GREATEST) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 900 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of HAPPY BAO BEI, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. DIEGO KOSTA, which was following HAPPY BAO BEI, was hampered in consequence. Rounding the Home Turn, LOOK ERAS became unbalanced after being bumped by MOST BEAUTIFUL (Apprentice K K Chiong) which lay in. STAR OF JOY, which was following, was inconvenienced in consequence. Apprentice Chiong was reprimanded and advised that she would be expected to make every endeavour to afford horses racing to her inside comfortable racing room. When MOST BEAUTIFUL was shifted out to relieve the tightening to LOOK ERAS, MONEY BOY was directed out away from the heels of MOST BEAUTIFUL.
As STAR OF JOY was being shifted to the inside of MOST BEAUTIFUL in an attempt to obtain clear running after the 400 Metres, MOST BEAUTIFUL, which was commencing to give ground, shifted in under pressure, resulting in STAR OF JOY having to be checked when disappointed for running between MOST BEAUTIFUL and LOOK ERAS which was also giving ground. As STAR OF JOY had not established running to the inside of MOST BEAUTIFUL, the Stewards took no further action other than to reprimand Apprentice Chiong and advise her that in similar circumstances she would be expected to do more to prevent her mount from shifting ground than she did on this occasion. HAIR TRIGGER, which was following STAR OF JOY, was shifted out away from the heels of that horse in consequence after being held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight.
Passing the 250 Metres, MORETHANLUCKY was momentarily held up for clear running behind MR PICASSO which shifted in marginally.
Passing the 200 Metres, STAR OF JOY was again disappointed for running between MOST BEAUTIFUL and LOOK ERAS which were continuing to give ground. Consequently STAR OF JOY was not able to be tested until passing the 150 Metres.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MOST BEAUTIFUL, Apprentice K K Chiong stated that as instructed she allowed her mount to stride forward in the early stages. . She said passing the 900 Metres she felt as though LOOK ERAS, which was racing to the inside of MOST BEAUTIFUL, was being steadied and therefore she allowed her mount to improve forward of that horse with a view to crossing to the rail. She said however that LOOK ERAS continued to maintain its position inside MOST BEAUTIFUL after the 800 Metres and as the tempo of the race at this stage was strong, she desisted in attempting to cross that horse and remained racing to the outside of LOOK ERAS. She said MOST BEAUTIFUL came under pressure in the early part of the Straight and after the 300 Metres commenced to give ground and weakened over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of MOST BEAUTIFUL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MOST BEAUTIFUL, a favourite for today’s race and which finished last, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MOST BEAUTIFUL will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

When questioned, Apprentice K K Chiong stated that she had been asked to take up a forward position on HIGH VOLATILITY as it is somewhat one-paced and was successful when ridden in this manner at its last start. She said however that HIGH VOLATILITY was slow to begin after being fractious in the barriers and this resulted in the horse settling at the tail of the field in the early stages. She said after the 1200 Metres she was racing behind LITTLE ISLAND and inside CLOUD NINE and as she did not want HIGH VOLATILITY to be left flat-footed, she elected to improve around CLOUD NINE in the hope that she might be able to obtain a position in advance of that horse with some cover. A veterinary inspection of HIGH VOLATILITY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
