Race: 1 (563) CHANGI HANDICAP Class 5 1000 m
A short distance after the start, GOLDEN CANNON shifted out and bumped GLORY HORSIE, causing both horses to become unbalanced. GLORY HORSIE then shifted out and made heavy contact with INVISIBLE which was checked when crowded for room between GLORY HORSIE and HIGHLAND DRAGON. In this incident, INVISIBLE blundered badly and lost a considerable amount of ground.
Also soon after the start, FUNNY BUDDIES was awkwardly placed outside the heels of ORIENTAL FANTASIA which shifted out.
After the 800 Metres, when being steadied, GOLDEN CANNON commenced to prove difficult to settle. Then passing the 700 Metres, GOLDEN CANNON, which continued to get its head up when being restrained, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of HIGHLAND DRAGON (D Whyte) which shifted in when not properly clear. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that GOLDEN CANNON’s racing manners had contributed significantly to this incident, nonetheless D Whyte was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground.
Passing the 750 Metres, LUCKY FRIENDS got its head up when being steadied after being awkwardly placed inside the heels of GOLDEN CANNON.
Near the 650 Metres, LUCKY FRIENDS was awkwardly placed behind SEVEN LUCK.
FUNNY BUDDIES was held up for clear running when awkwardly placed close to the heels of NOBLE BUDDIES in the early part of the Straight. FUNNY BUDDIES then had difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 150 Metres and approaching the 100 Metres was shifted to the inside of HIGHLAND DRAGON to continue improving.
Over the concluding stages, NOBLE BUDDIES raced tight inside FUNNY BUDDIES.
Close to the finishing line, SEVEN LUCK was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SPARKLING TALENT and consequently was not able to be fully tested all the way to the end of the race.
Throughout the race, SPARKLING TALENT travelled wide and without cover.
The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in whilst they considered if RUGBY DIAMOND (N Rawiller) had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the official videos, it was established that as the start was effected RUGBY DIAMOND put its head down and to the left which resulted in the horse losing a significant amount of ground. As the Stewards were of the opinion that RUGBY DIAMOND’s barrier manners had been the sole reason for this incident occurring and that the incident had occurred simultaneous to the start being effected, RUGBY DIAMOND was deemed to have been afforded a fair start and accordingly, the horse was declared a runner. Whilst it had no bearing on the decision of the Stewards, it should be noted that neither N Rawiller nor Mr W Y So, the trainer of RUGBY DIAMOND, made an application for the horse to be declared a non-runner. Before being allowed to race again, RUGBY DIAMOND will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.
After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on FUNNY BUDDIES at the request of Trainer P O’Sullivan. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, FUNNY BUDDIES will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
RUGBY DIAMOND, ORIENTAL FANTASIA and SPARKLING TALENT were sent for sampling.

When being ridden along, CAREFREE LET GO (Apprentice H T No) then shifted out further, resulting in CALL ME AWESOME and MANFUL STAR being crowded for room inside GRACYDAD. STARLIGHT, which was following GOLDEN DEER, shifted out abruptly away from the heels of that horse. RAICHU, which travelled wide and without cover throughout the race, then continued to give ground abruptly and finished tailed out. The performance of RAICHU was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, RAICHU will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
PRINCE HARMONY lay out rounding the Home Turn.
Passing the 250 Metres, CAREFREE LET GO and KWAICHUNG BROTHERS bumped.

When questioned, K Teetan stated that STARLIGHT travelled reasonably well in the early and middle stages, but after losing momentum near the 500 Metres appeared to lose confidence and then did not finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of STARLIGHT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, C Schofield (KWAICHUNG BROTHERS) was unable to offer any explanation for the horse’s disappointing performance. He said from the inside barrier KWAICHUNG BROTHERS was able to obtain a good run behind the leaders and was shifted to the outside of GRACYDAD into clear running near the 400 Metres. He said KWAICHUNG BROTHERS came under pressure in the early part of the Straight, did not close off the race and was disappointing. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, CASA MASTER got its head up on a number of occasions when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CASH COURIER.
Passing the 900 Metres, CASA MASTER shifted out to improve its position and after this travelled wide and without cover.
When endeavouring to improve into tight running between FAIR COMMENT and NEWSWIRE FREE passing the 700 Metres, CASH COURIER raced tight between those horses and then near the 650 Metres was steadied when unable to maintain its position outside FAIR COMMENT which shifted out marginally when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SMART UNION.

When questioned regarding the performance of EXCELLENCE, Z Purton stated that after shifting out to follow CASA MASTER when that horse improved after the 900 Metres, he shifted EXCELLENCE out from behind CASA MASTER to continue improving passing the 700 Metres. He said EXCELLENCE came under pressure after the 600 Metres and then gave ground. He said whilst EXCELLENCE was disappointing, the horse had to cover some ground during the race. K C Leung (AMAZING GOLD) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of THE SYLPH, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. K C Leung was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Thursday, 20 April 2017 and to expire on Monday, 24 April 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Leung’s good race riding record.

Also passing the 100 Metres, INDUSTRIALIST WAY was steadied when disappointed for running between SHARP SAILOR which initially shifted out and ANDOYAS which shifted in under pressure.

When APACHE SPIRIT was checked, that horse shifted out, resulting in LUCKY DAY being crowded for room inside WILD BOY. As the Stewards were comfortably satisfied that BEAR RAPPER had contributed significantly to the incident by initially shifting in and crowding the racing room of APACHE SPIRIT, they could not be satisfied to the necessary degree that N Rawiller’s action in allowing LOTUS BREEZE to shift in after this had been the principal cause of the incident. Accordingly, no further action was taken other than to advise N Rawiller to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners to his inside in similar circumstances.

K Teetan explained that he had been instructed that if WHAT ELSE BUT YOU began well and was able to take up a forward position, then he should do so, however, if the horse did not begin well, having regard that there were a number of horses better drawn than WHAT ELSE BUT YOU which would show speed, he was advised to shift across behind runners to obtain cover.
