When questioned, Z Purton (HAYMAKER) stated that after improving inside VICTORY MUSIC rounding the Home Turn when that horse shifted out, he intended to continue to shift out from behind FOREVER FUN with a view to attempting to obtain clear running between that horse and GOLDEN GLORY. He said however that in the early part of the Straight HAYMAKER hung in and despite its head being directed to the outside, HAYMAKER was reluctant to shift out from behind FOREVER FUN. He said when FOREVER FUN commenced to give ground after the 300 Metres, HAYMAKER improved quickly to be racing inside the heels of that horse, therefore it was no longer available for him to shift to the outside of FOREVER FUN. He said this resulted in HAYMAKER getting its head up when being checked away from the heels of ORIENTAL FANTASIA near the 250 Metres when badly held up for clear running behind that horse. After viewing the videos, the Stewards accepted Z Purton’s explanation. A veterinary inspection of HAYMAKER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A FAST ONE, GOLDEN GLORY and TREASURE AND GOLD were sent for sampling.

At the same time, TORNEY was crowded for room between HAPPY HAPPY and DOCTORS DELIGHT which was taken in by MY BLESSING. A short distance later, ALL YOU KNOW and TORNEY were both checked when crowded for room between GOLDEN EFFORT which continued to shift out and MY BLESSING (T Berry) which shifted in. In this incident, HAPPY HAPPY and DOCTORS DELIGHT were also hampered. T Berry was advised that whilst there was a shift out from GOLDEN EFFORT which had contributed to this incident, nonetheless in similar circumstances he would be expected to do more than he did on this occasion to prevent his mounts from shifting ground.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GOLDEN EFFORT which was having its first race start tonight, A Badel stated that although GOLDEN EFFORT was somewhat nervous in the barriers, the horse began well and he was able to take up a forward position behind the leader HAPPY HAPPY STAR in the early stages without having to make any use of his horse. He said GOLDEN EFFORT travelled very well until near the 500 Metres at which time he put the horse under pressure to improve behind HAPPY HAPPY STAR. He said, despite his riding, GOLDEN EFFORT did not quicken as he thought it would and he had to ride the horse vigorously rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight to gain some response. He added, despite being ridden out, GOLDEN EFFORT gave ground and was very disappointing in the manner in which it weakened noticeably to finish at the rear of the field. He said having ridden GOLDEN EFFORT prior to tonight’s race, he was unable to detect any issues with the horse and could only say that it is immature at this early stage of its racing career. A veterinary inspection of GOLDEN EFFORT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of GOLDEN EFFORT, a favourite for tonight’s race and which finished last, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, GOLDEN EFFORT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
After the race, J Moreira reported that after travelling strongly in the lead, HAPPY HAPPY STAR weakened noticeably over the concluding stages and was disappointing. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY HAPPY STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

AMAZING FEELING was then ridden along in an attempt to make up lost ground and passing the winning post on the first occasion was left racing wide and without cover. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, ARGENTUM and EMPIRE STAR raced tight.

Also rounding the Home Turn, ARGENTUM was bumped and taken wider by SICHUAN BOSS which shifted out from behind AMAZING FEELING to obtain clear running.
Near the 150 Metres, GENTRY shifted out away from EMPIRE STAR and was consequently awkwardly placed inside the heels of SUM WIN DRAGON. Then passing the 100 Metres, GENTRY was crowded for room between SUM WIN DRAGON which shifted in marginally and EMPIRE STAR which was taken out slightly by ARGENTUM. In this incident, EMPIRE STAR became unbalanced after making contact with GENTRY. After this, EMPIRE STAR and ARGENTUM raced tight.
Close to the finishing line, SANGRIA raced tight outside CHARITY WINGS.
When questioned regarding the performance of EMPIRE STAR, Z Purton stated that the tempo of the race did not suit his mount. He said after proving very difficult to settle near the 1300 Metres, EMPIRE STAR would not relax and travelled too keenly. He said because of this the horse was not able to finish off the race. He said although he was not able to properly test his mount after being awkwardly placed between GENTRY and ARGENTUM, the horse finished off the race only fairly at this time. He added whilst EMPIRE STAR was disappointing, he believed the circumstances of the race largely contributed to the horse’s finishing performance. A veterinary inspection of EMPIRE STAR immediately following the race found that horse to have an epiglottic entrapment.
A veterinary inspection of AMAZING FEELING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
EMPIRE STAR, MULTIGOGO and CHARITY WINGS were sent for sampling.

T Berry (STORM SIGNAL) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of DIAMOND MASTER, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled after DIAMOND MASTER raced tight inside BLAZE STAMINA which shifted in marginally before being corrected by its rider. T Berry was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 13 December 2017 and to expire on Monday, 18 December 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the slight contribution from BLAZE STAMINA to this incident.

C Schofield was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 13 December 2017 and to expire on Monday, 18 December 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Schofield’s good race riding record.
The performance of LUCKY MASTER, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, LUCKY MASTER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of DIAMOND MASTER and LUCKY MASTER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
MERRYGOWIN, SIR REDALOT and AFFLUENCE START were sent for sampling.

Near the 50 Metres, GO GO WIN was momentarily eased away from the heels of MISTER MONTE which shifted out.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of RELENTLESS ME, J Moreira stated that it was hoped that the horse would be able to obtain cover behind the leaders if possible and for this reason he steadied his mount after obtaining a forward position in the hope that MARQULA would improve its position forward of RELENTLESS ME so as to provide his mount with cover. He said MARQULA shifted in to race outside RELENTLESS ME near the 1300 Metres, however, did not continue on into the lead and the rider of that horse was content to remain racing to the outside of RELENTLESS ME. He said irrespective of this, RELENTLESS ME travelled very well in the lead and at no stage was any pressure placed on the horse. He said because of this he anticipated that RELENTLESS ME would respond strongly to his riding when placed under pressure. He added he did not have to commence to ride RELENTLESS ME along until rounding the Home Turn, however, when placed under full pressure, RELENTLESS ME did not quicken as he anticipated it would and then came under heavy pressure prior to the 200 Metres. He said RELENTLESS ME was disappointing in its failure to finish off the race and he was not able to offer any excuse for the horse’s performance. A veterinary inspection of RELENTLESS ME immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of FULL GLAMOUR and SMART BOY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
