Race: 1 (173) TAI LAM CHUNG HANDICAP Class 5 1800 m
CHOICE EXCHEQUER was withdrawn on 7.11.17 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (left front tendon injury) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter HOLY UNICORN (A Badel). Before being allowed to race again, CHOICE EXCHEQUER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
GOLD VELVET was crowded for room on jumping between HOLY UNICORN and SAVANNAH WIND which shifted out. A short distance later, GOLD VELVET and HOLY UNICORN were both crowded for room between WEALTHY FORTUNE and SAVANNAH WIND which continued to shift out.
Shortly after the start, MY FOLKS momentarily raced tight inside MY GIFT.
Passing the 1600 Metres, JIMSON THE FAMOUS, which was being ridden along to obtain a forward position, was crowded for room between MY FOLKS which was taken out by MY GIFT and DOUBLE POINT which got its head on the side and shifted in away from LE PEGASE.
After the 1200 Metres, DOUBLE POINT was left racing wide and without cover.
For some distance in the middle stages, MY FOLKS travelled keenly in the lead.
Rounding the Home Turn, G-ONE UNION was checked away from the heels of MY FOLKS which commenced to give ground. GOLD VELVET, which was following G-ONE UNION, was severely checked away from the heels of that horse in consequence and in doing so shifted out abruptly and bumped ROCK THE TREE. HOLY UNICORN, which was following ROCK THE TREE, was checked away from the heels of that horse in consequence.
Also rounding the Home Turn, SAVANNAH WIND was awkwardly placed close to the heels of LE PEGASE (M L Yeung) which shifted out. M L Yeung was warned against the practice of allowing his mounts to shift ground unnecessarily.
Passing the 250 Metres, BEST JADE TRIUMPH raced in restricted room inside MY FOLKS which shifted in when continuing to give ground.
Close to the finishing line, HOLY UNICORN was directed out away from the heels of MY GIFT to continue improving.
Mr C W Chang, the trainer of MY FOLKS, explained that as the horse had been particularly disappointing in failing to win a race in Hong Kong, he instructed M Chadwick to obtain a forward position if possible to see whether this would benefit the horse.
When questioned regarding the performance of LE PEGASE, M L Yeung stated that in its previous races the horse had been able to obtain a forward position without having to be hard ridden and consequently had been able to finish off its races. He said tonight, from the outside barrier, he had to ride LE PEGASE along for a considerable distance in the early stages to clear runners to its inside in order to obtain a forward position. He said after being able to shift in to race outside MY GIFT which was positioned behind the leader, LE PEGASE did not travel as well as it had previously mainly due to the race being run at a solid tempo. He added LE PEGASE came under pressure prior to the Home Turn and then was not able to finish off the race. He said, in his opinion, LE PEGASE’s disappointing performance could be attributed to the amount of use he had to make of the horse in the early stages. A veterinary inspection of LE PEGASE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of LE PEGASE was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, LE PEGASE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of GOLD VELVET immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GOLD VELVET, ROCK THE TREE and WEALTHY FORTUNE were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (174) SHEK PIK HANDICAP Class 4 1000 m
Apprentice H T Mo (OCEAN ROAR) was fined the sum of $2,000 for presenting himself to be weighed out with the incorrect saddle cloth number.
After being loaded into the barriers, HORSE PROSPEROUS (K Teetan) became fractious, got its head down and broke through under the front gates. HORSE PROSPEROUS then completed a circuit of the course riderless. Acting on veterinary advice that HORSE PROSPEROUS was not fit to start, the horse was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, HORSE PROSPEROUS will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Following this incident, K Teetan was examined by the Club’s Racing Medical Officer and passed fit to fulfil his remaining race riding engagements.
DON’T MISS and EVER STRONG began only fairly.
From the outside barrier, SPARKLING TALENT was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Shortly after the start, EVER STRONG got its head on the side and shifted in away from LUNAR ZEPHYR, resulting in EVER STRONG being awkwardly placed outside the heels of ELEGANCE PROMISE.
ELEGANCE PROMISE lost its left hind plate shortly after the start.
Passing the 950 Metres, PADDINGTON was bumped by NOBLE DE BOY which got its head on the side and lay in away from CALIFORNIA ASPAR.
Approaching and passing the 500 Metres, PADDINGTON travelled keenly and was awkwardly placed behind DON’T MISS.
Passing the 500 Metres, PEACE COMBINATION was steadied away from the heels of HOLEE MONEY (C Schofield) which shifted in when not fully clear. C Schofield was advised to ensure that he provides sufficient clearance when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Shortly after entering the Straight, EVER STRONG was shifted in away from the heels of PADDINGTON to obtain clear running.
Passing the 100 Metres, PADDINGTON was bumped by CALIFORNIA ASPAR which was taken in by NOBLE DE BOY.
Close to the finishing line, PADDINGTON was awkwardly placed inside the heels of CALIFORNIA ASPAR.
LUNAR ZEPHYR lay in under pressure in the Straight.
A veterinary inspection of DON’T MISS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
DON’T MISS, OCEAN ROAR and PEACE COMBINATION were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (175) PLOVER COVE HANDICAP Class 4 1200 m
WONDERFUL TIGER was slow to begin and then was shifted across behind runners from a wide barrier.
ELITE POWER began only fairly.
Also from wide barriers, SUPER CLAN and FUNNY BUDDIES were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Passing the 1100 Metres, MULTIGOGO raced tight inside FORMULA GALORE which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of LEISURED FEET.
Making the first turn approaching the 1000 Metres, ELITE POWER got its head on the side and lay out, resulting in CELESTIAL ARROW being crowded for room inside FUNNY BUDDIES.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, ELITE POWER lost ground after shifting out towards the heels of MULTIGOGO which lay in momentarily.
Also making the turn after the 600 Metres, FUNNY BUDDIES was awkwardly placed inside the heels of OUR HONOUR.
Approaching the 100 Metres, FUNNY BUDDIES was directed out across the heels of FORMULA GALORE to continue improving.
Passing the 50 Metres, WONDERFUL TIGER was steadied away from the heels of MULTIGOGO.
For the majority of the race, FORMULA GALORE travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, S Clipperton stated that he was asked to ride MULTIGOGO positively to obtain a position in the first four if possible. He said he was also told that MULTIGOGO had previously travelled very strongly after being ridden along in the early stages, so he was asked to be mindful of this when positioning the horse in the early stages to obtain a forward position. He said MULTIGOGO began well and he rode his mount along in the early stages. He said he had not expected STARLOT to be able to obtain a leading position from an inside barrier in the early stages and he anticipated that he would be able to obtain a position outside OTOUTO. He said however that STARLOT was ridden along in the early stages and as OTOUTO was holding its position inside that horse, he felt that he may be left racing three wide if he continued to ride MULTIGOGO forward, therefore he elected to obtain a position behind STARLOT. He said when he made this decision, OTOUTO was steadied by its rider to allow STARLOT to cross which resulted in MULTIGOGO being slightly further back than had been anticipated. He said he had to niggle at MULTIGOGO after the 1100 Metres to maintain its position inside FORMULA GALORE and he did not believe that MULTIGOGO would have been able to show much more speed in the early stages if pressured. He added MULTIGOGO travelled only fairly throughout the race and came under heavy pressure after the 500 Metres. He said it was not until passing the 200 Metres that MULTIGOGO commenced to finish off the race well and he intended to proceed into running between SALSA BROTHERS and LEISURED FEET, however, LEISURED FEET shifted in after the 150 Metres which required him to direct MULTIGOGO to the inside of SALSA BROTHERS approaching the 100 Metres to continue improving. He said whilst he did not believe MULTIGOGO would have won had he been able to improve between SALSA BROTHERS and LEISURED FEET, he felt the horse would have finished closer to the leader had he been able to obtain this run. He said the manner in which MULTIGOGO raced tonight gave him the impression that it would benefit from stepping up in distance to 1400 Metres and he advised the connections accordingly.
When questioned regarding the performance of STARLOT, Trainer R Gibson was not able to offer any explanation for the horse’s improved performance. He said STARLOT had disappointed him in a number of its runs on the All Weather surface prior to its last start on the turf. He said over 1400 Metres back on the turf last start, having regard to the manner in which STARLOT had disappointed him in its prior races, it was decided to have the horse ridden more patiently to see whether it would be able to finish off the race. He said he was happy with the manner in which STARLOT had finished off the race on that occasion, however, back to 1200 Metres tonight, he did not anticipate that the horse would improve sufficiently to be able to be a winning chance. He said it was decided, from the horse’s inside barrier, to ride it more positively in the hope that it would perform better. He added the horse was found to have a substantial amount of blood in its trachea following its final run last season and he had had to manage this situation with the horse.
After the race, it was reported that CELESTIAL ARROW had sustained a superficial large abrasion to the right hock.
A veterinary inspection of OTOUTO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of OUR HONOUR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
MULTIGOGO, STARLOT and LEISURED FEET were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (176) KAM SHAN HANDICAP Class 4 1650 m
WINASWEWISH began only fairly and then lost further ground when crowded for room between AUTUMN GOLD which shifted out and PENZANCE which got its head on the side and shifted in abruptly. In this incident, PENZANCE became unbalanced after bumping with WINASWEWISH.
FOREVER POSH began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped BO DUKE.
From wide barriers, FOREVER POSH and CASA MASTER were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
TRENDY WIN was also steadied shortly after the start and shifted across to obtain cover.
Passing the 1400 Metres, PENZANCE got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MISTER MONTE which shifted out.
In the early stages, BO DUKE was left racing wide and without cover and after the 1200 Metres was ridden along to obtain a more forward position and to obtain cover.
Passing the 700 Metres, CURLING LUXURY and BO DUKE raced tight.
Rounding the Home Turn, CURLING LUXURY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GRAND HARBOUR.
Passing the 300 Metres, WINASWEWISH and TRENDY WIN raced tight.
Near the 150 Metres, WINASWEWISH was shifted to the inside of AUTUMN GOLD (K Teetan) which shifted out when not quite clear. K Teetan was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Close to the finishing line, BO DUKE was awkwardly placed inside POLYMER LUCK which got its head on the side and lay in.
A veterinary inspection of GRAND HARBOUR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CURLING LUXURY and MISTER MONTE were sent for sampling.

Race: 5 (177) THE AMERICAN CLUB CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 3 1200 m
FAIRY TWINS was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (injury to right front foot). Before being allowed to race again, FAIRY TWINS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
CHARITY GLORY shifted out at the start, resulting in SWOT WINDICATOR being crowded for room inside KING MORTAR. After this, SWOT WINDICATOR was shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
LOADED shifted out at the start and bumped the hindquarters of BLAZE STAMINA which became unbalanced. After this, LOADED, from a wide barrier, was shifted across behind runners.
After the 800 Metres, CHARITY GLORY raced tight inside SAM’S LOVE.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, SWOT WINDICATOR raced tight inside CHARITY GLORY which got its head on the side and lay in away from SAM’S LOVE.
Near the 250 Metres, KING MORTAR got its head on the side and shifted in away from SMART BOY, resulting in the horse being momentarily awkwardly placed outside the heels of BLAZE STAMINA.
NEW ELEGANCE hung in under pressure in the Straight and proved difficult to ride.
LOADED lost its left front plate after the race.
When questioned, A Badel stated that he was asked to ride SAM’S LOVE where it was comfortable, but not to ride it along aggressively in the early stages. He said it was explained to him that after being ridden from off the speed in its first race start when successful, the horse had not finished off its races as well when ridden in a forward position at its subsequent two race starts and therefore he was asked to ensure that the horse was settled so that it would close off the race. He said in the early stages he anticipated that GAMECHANGERS would shift across to race on the rail behind GOLDEN HARVEST and he would be able to shift across with that horse and obtain a position one horse off the rail in about midfield. He said however that after the 1100 Metres NEW ELEGANCE was ridden along to improve its position inside GAMECHANGERS which resulted in that horse remaining in a one-off position which caused SAM’S LOVE to be left racing in a three wide position. He said SAM’S LOVE made the turn near the 1000 Metres awkwardly and as the horse was travelling keenly, he was not able to steady it sufficiently to immediately race behind GAMECHANGERS. He said however that this did not overly concern him as he had cover behind SMART BOY at this time, so he was comfortable to continue racing to the outside of GAMECHANGERS and follow SMART BOY into a more forward position. He added however that SMART BOY was able to shift in to obtain a position in front of GAMECHANGERS after the 800 Metres, therefore he steadied SAM’S LOVE in an attempt to obtain cover behind GAMECHANGERS. He said he was able to obtain partial cover after the 700 Metres. He said SAM’S LOVE was unbalanced making the turn after the 600 Metres due to its inexperience and then after being placed under pressure did not finish off the race as expected. He said however that he believed at its first time of asking at Happy Valley, under lights, the horse was not entirely comfortable and he recommended to connections that they consider returning the horse to Sha Tin if there is a suitable race. Trainer C H Yip stated that after SAM’S LOVE trialed well at Happy Valley in the lead up to the race, he expected it to race well tonight. He said it was hoped that the horse would be able to obtain a position in about midfield or slightly in front of midfield, however, he stressed to Jockey Badel that he did not want the horse being used up in the early stages as it had disappointed him at its last two races last season when not able to finish off the race after being ridden along to obtain a forward position. He added whilst Jockey Badel had recommended to him that SAM’S LOVE be returned to Sha Tin, he would give further consideration to the horse’s programme as, in his opinion, it had trialed particularly well at Happy Valley prior to tonight’s race. A veterinary inspection of SAM’S LOVE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
FANTASTIC EIGHT and GAMECHANGERS were sent for sampling.

Race: 6 (178) HIGH ISLAND HANDICAP Class 3 1650 m
GO BEAUTY GO shifted out at the start and bumped ACCLAIMED LIGHT which in turn shifted out and bumped WINNING SUPREME.
Shortly after the start, BRAVE LEGEND shifted out and bumped GO BEAUTY GO.
From the outside barriers, TEN FLAMES, GOODHEART SUCCESS and HEROIC GURU were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Near the 1050 Metres, CELESTIAL NOVA got its head up. Then passing the 1000 Metres, CELESTIAL NOVA got its head on the side and shifted out towards the heels of GO BEAUTY GO.
Rounding the Home Turn, THE SYLPH was awkwardly placed outside JADE FORTUNE.
When questioned, S Clipperton stated that throughout the early and middle stages and particularly along the Back Straight GO BEAUTY GO would not relax and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BANK ON RED for some distance. He said he believed that GO BEAUTY GO would be left flat-footed when the tempo of the race increased, therefore he elected to allow his mount to stride forward near the 600 Metres in the hope that he would be able to establish a break over the remainder of the field. He said if his mount had relaxed better, he would have been content to remain racing behind BANK ON RED for longer, however, he did not believe it was in the horse’s best interests to continue racing behind that horse when GO BEAUTY GO was racing keenly.
When questioned, N Rawiller (BRAVE LEGEND) stated that along the Back Straight he had been following THE SYLPH. He said after the 600 Metres the tempo of the race increased noticeably and BRAVE LEGEND, which was attempting 1650 Metres for the first time tonight, came off the bridle and did not quicken with the remainder of the field. He said he rode his mount along in order to have it quicken, however, as BRAVE LEGEND was unbalanced, he was reluctant to ride it too aggressively. He added BRAVE LEGEND commenced to improve its position rounding the Home Turn and then in the Straight finished off the race well.
CALIFORNIA JOY, BANK ON RED and GO BEAUTY GO were sent for sampling.

Race: 7 (179) TAI TAM HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 3 1200 m
HAPPY GUY was checked on jumping when crowded for room between GRACE HEART and WHO ELSE BUT YOU, both of which shifted ground. In this incident, all three horses became badly unbalanced.
HAPPY BAO BEI shifted out at the start and bumped SHALLUCK.
TRIUMPHANT JEWEL and GENEROUS HEART bumped on jumping.
BREEDERS’ STAR began awkwardly and lost ground and then shortly after the start was shifted across behind runners.
Also from wide barriers, GRACE HEART and HAPPY GUY were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Despite being hard ridden in the early stages, TRIUMPHANT JEWEL failed to muster speed.
Near the 1150 Metres, DOLLAR REWARD shifted out and bumped HARBOUR ALERT.
Approaching the 1000 Metres, DOLLAR REWARD was steadied away from the heels of HARBOUR ALERT (S Clipperton) which shifted in when not quite clear. S Clipperton was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in future.
Near the 950 Metres, HAPPY BAO BEI got its head up when awkwardly placed outside the heels of JOLLY CONVERGENCE.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, GENEROUS HEART got its head on the side, lay in and brushed the running rail.
Approaching and passing the 200 Metres, JOLLY CONVERGENCE shifted out under pressure and was awkwardly placed inside the heels of GENEROUS HEART. Then over the concluding stages, JOLLY CONVERGENCE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of HARBOUR ALERT and consequently was not able to be ridden out to the end of the race.
Throughout the race, HAPPY GUY was detached from the field and subsequently finished tailed out. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY GUY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of HAPPY GUY was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPY GUY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that GRACE HEART was lame in its left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, GRACE HEART will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of DOLLAR REWARD immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GENEROUS HEART, WHO ELSE BUT YOU and HARBOUR ALERT were sent for sampling.

Race: 8 (180) ABERDEEN HANDICAP Class 2 1200 m
CONVINCIBLE, Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 7.11.17 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (right front tendon injury). Before being allowed to race again, CONVINCIBLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
On arrival at the Start, it was noted that PERPETUAL TREASURE had blood at its mouth. PERPETUAL MOUTH was examined by the Veterinary Office who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
BORN IN CHINA was crowded for room on jumping between SPOTLIGHT DREAM and PABLOSKY which shifted out.
From wide barriers, ARCHIPPUS, BLOCKER DEE and DRAGON GENERAL were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
After initially being ridden along in the early stages to obtain a forward position, STRATHMORE was left racing wide making the turn near the 1000 Metres and was then steadied to obtain cover.
Shortly after entering the Straight, BLOCKER DEE was shifted to the inside of CALIFORNIA WHIP to obtain clear running. DRAGON GENERAL, which was following BLOCKER DEE, was shifted in away from the heels of that horse in consequence.
Near the 50 Metres, ARCHIPPUS commenced to shift in under pressure, resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten.
Throughout the race, PERPETUAL TREASURE (M L Yeung) travelled wide and without cover. After the race, M L Yeung expressed concern regarding the action of PERPETUAL TREASURE. A veterinary inspection of PERPETUAL TREASURE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, PERPETUAL TREASURE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned, C Schofield stated that he was asked to make use of the inside barrier and have STARLIGHT as close as possible without having to ride his mount hard. He said he rode his mount along in the early stages to ensure that STARLIGHT was able to take up a forward position and passing the 1000 Metres was racing just to the inside of the heels of BORN IN CHINA. He said he had hoped to maintain this position, however, when a margin opened up between his mount and HOUSE OF FUN, the horse that he was following, he believed that he would have had to ride his mount aggressively in order to obtain a position closer behind HOUSE OF FUN so as to prevent BORN IN CHINA being able to cross STARLIGHT. He added he therefore allowed BORN IN CHINA to cross STARLIGHT as it would have been contrary to his instructions to ride his mount along at this time. He said in the early part of the Straight he was able to shift STARLIGHT away from behind BORN IN CHINA, however, the horse finished off the race only fairly.
A veterinary inspection of PABLOSKY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
STARLIGHT, BORN IN CHINA and ARCHIPPUS were sent for sampling.
