Race: 2 (146) ISLAND HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m
When in the Parade Ring, OPEN HOUSE kicked a rail. Acting on advice from the Veterinary Officer that OPEN HOUSE had sustained a laceration to the left hind cannon and as such was not suitable to race, the horse was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, OPEN HOUSE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
GOOD CHOICE AHEAD began only fairly.
From wide barriers, LOVE CHUNGHWA and FLYING FORCE were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
SACRED IBIS got its head on the side and made the turn near the 1000 Metres awkwardly. SACRED IBIS again made the turn after the 600 Metres awkwardly, shifted out and inconvenienced JOYFUL FOREVER.
Making the turn passing the 1000 Metres, FLYING FORCE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SICHUAN CHIEF when attempting to obtain a position with cover behind that horse. FLYING FORCE then made the turn awkwardly, got its head up on a number of occasions and travelled wide and without cover for the remainder of the race.

Near the 75 Metres, NONE OTHER momentarily raced tight inside PRESIDENTPARAMOUNT which shifted in.
When questioned, Z Purton stated that it had been intended for LIGHTNING MISSILE to be ridden in a forward position. He said after being placed in the barriers LIGHTNING MISSILE was fractious and turned its head to the side on a number of occasions and then as the start was effected again turned its head to the left which resulted in the horse being slow to begin. He said because of the manner in which LIGHTNING MISSILE began, he elected to shift his mount across behind runners in the early stages as he believed it was no longer an option for him to pursue a forward position. He said after this LIGHTNING MISSILE travelled satisfactorily, however, in the Straight finished off the race only one-paced and, in his opinion, raced disappointingly. A veterinary inspection of LIGHTNING MISSILE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
LOVE CHUNGHWA, SACRED IBIS and ROYAL CHOCOLATE were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (147) NAM FUNG HANDICAP Class 5 1200 m
HAYMAKER dwelt at the start and consequently lost ground. Before being allowed to race again, HAYMAKER will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. After this, from a wide barrier, HAYMAKER was shifted across behind runners.
CARRY TO WIN began very awkwardly.
VICTORY DUKE began awkwardly.
From the outside barrier, HURRICANE KID was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Shortly after the start, SMART SALUTE and KING’S STEED bumped, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.
GREAT WISDOM got its head up in the early stages when being steadied in order to be shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
CARRY TO WIN lost its right hind plate near the 1100 Metres.
Approaching the 850 Metres, KING’S STEED and CARRY TO WIN bumped.
After the 650 Metres, IDYLLIC WIND was left racing wide and without cover.
For some distance after the 500 Metres, TREASURE AND GOLD became unbalanced when racing tight between HURRICANE KID and HAYMAKER (Apprentice M F Poon) which shifted to the outside of RAICHU to improve. In this incident, HURRICANE KID also became unbalanced after being bumped by TREASURE AND GOLD. Apprentice Poon was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
At the entrance to the Straight, CARRY TO WIN was bumped on the hindquarters by KING’S STEED (M Chadwick) which, when attempting to improve to the outside of REGENCY HONEY, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse. M Chadwick was reprimanded and warned against the practice of placing unnecessary pressure on other horses in order to obtain clear running.
After RAICHU was shifted to the outside of CARRY TO WIN passing the 200 Metres to improve into available running between that horse and ROCKET LET WIN, CARRY TO WIN shifted out when commencing to give ground which resulted in RAICHU making contact with ROCKET LET WIN and then racing in restricted room between those horses until after the 150 Metres.
Passing the 200 Metres, VICTORY DUKE raced tight inside REGENCY HONEY which got its head on the side and shifted in when commencing to give ground.
Passing the 150 Metres, HAYMAKER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SMART SALUTE when being shifted to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running.
Approaching the finishing line, SMART SALUTE hung in under pressure, resulting in its rider, Z Purton, having to stop riding momentarily and straighten his mount.
A veterinary inspection of REGENCY HONEY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
VICTORY DUKE and SMART SALUTE were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (148) ISLAND HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 4 1200 m
HERO LOOK, which was fractious in the barriers, was slow to begin.
ENJOY LIFE began only fairly.
MERRYGOWIN and SHARPMIND bumped at the start.
From a wide barrier, ACCESSION YEARS was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
In the early stages, SHOW MISSION raced wide and without cover and then after the 800 Metres was ridden along to obtain a position outside the lead.
Approaching the 600 Metres, ACCESSION YEARS was left racing wide and without cover.
At the entrance to the Straight, LONDON CITY and MULTIMAX raced tight as LONDON CITY attempted to shift to the outside of SHOW MISSION.
Passing the 200 Metres, MERRYGOWIN raced tight inside EVER STRONG when improving inside that horse.
Close to the finishing line, SHOW MISSION was awkwardly placed inside the heels of SHARPMIND.
When questioned, D Whyte (HERO LOOK) stated that prior to the 500 Metres he considered shifting out to follow ENJOY LIFE as CELESTIAL ARROW, the horse he had been following, was under heavy pressure prior to this point. He said as it appeared as though ENJOY LIFE was going to shift to the outside of PEACE ON EARTH after the 400 Metres, he elected not to shift out to follow that horse, rather to save ground by obtaining inside runs and then improving between CELESTIAL ARROW and ENJOY LIFE should that horse continue to shift out. He added however that at the entrance to the Straight ENJOY LIFE was directed back to the inside of PEACE ON EARTH which resulted in him having to shift to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running. He said he placed HERO LOOK under pressure in the early part of the Straight and the horse finished off the race only fairly. He said approaching the 100 Metres he was momentarily awkwardly placed between ACCESSION YEARS and PEACE ON EARTH which shifted out, however, this only had little impact on the horse’s finishing position as he was able to again ride it out in the run to the line. He added HERO LOOK did not feel comfortable in its action in the race. A veterinary inspection of HERO LOOK immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in the left front leg and to have a substantial amount of blood in its trachea on endoscopic examination. Before being allowed to race again, HERO LOOK will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of MULTIMAX immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SHARPMIND and MERRYGOWIN were sent for sampling.

Race: 5 (149) THE HONG KONG COUNTRY CLUB CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) Class 4 1650 m
SEE ME NOW was tightened for room on jumping between DARING HEART and SICHUAN BOSS which shifted in.
After initially being ridden along from a wide barrier, QUICK RETURN was steadied shortly after the start and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
From the outside barrier, ELUSIVE STATE was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
PLAY IT got its head up in the early stages when being steadied to obtain cover.
After the 1200 Metres, QUICK RETURN got its head up for some distance when proving difficult to settle and awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOOD FOR YOU.
At the entrance to the Straight, MR KOOL was directed in away from the heels of DRAGON DANCE to obtain clear running. GENTRY, which was following, was momentarily awkwardly placed close to the heels of MR KOOL.
Passing the 200 Metres, DRAGON DANCE and SICHUAN BOSS raced tight due to SICHUAN BOSS shifting in.
When questioned, T Berry stated that he was asked to ride WAH MAY BABY in a forward position and hopefully obtain a position behind the speed with cover. He said he rode WAH MAY BABY positively in the early stages and rode his mount along for about the first 100 Metres in order to comply with his instructions, however, WAH MAY BABY did not show sufficient early speed to cross runners to its inside and as the tempo in the early part of the race was strong, he elected then to shift across behind runners and obtain cover rather than having to race unnecessarily wide. He said after being bumped by QUICK RETURN near the 1200 Metres, the tempo of the race slowed appreciably, however, by this time he had already committed to riding the horse further back in the field than had been intended due to the horse’s lack of early speed. He said after racing in a three wide position with cover, WAH MAY BABY was taken wider still after the 1000 Metres by GOOD FOR YOU which shifted ground when over-racing. He said because of this he steadied WAH MAY BABY to follow GOOD FOR YOU which resulted in the horse being even further back in the field. He added after this WAH MAY BABY travelled only fairly and appeared to lose interest in the race when having to race towards the rear. He said after being placed under pressure, WAY MAY BABY did not respond to his riding. A veterinary inspection of WAH MAY BABY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of WAH MAY BABY, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WAH MAY BABY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
When questioned, Apprentice M F Poon stated that he was asked to ride MEGATRON in front of midfield and hopefully with cover behind the leaders. He said, despite riding his mount along for a considerable distance, MEGATRON was not able to show sufficient speed to cross SICHUAN BOSS to his inside and therefore, passing the winning post on the first occasion, he elected to steady MEGATRON and obtain a trailing position with cover. He said after initially obtaining cover on MEGATRON in a three wide position, MEGATRON was then left racing without cover when SICHUAN BOSS improved its position to be racing outside the lead. He said MEGATRON travelled only fairly throughout the race and after being placed under pressure near the 450 Metres did not quicken and was then disappointing in the manner in which it weakened in the Straight. When questioned, Mr P F Yiu, the trainer of MEGATRON, stated that whilst MEGATRON was disappointing, he felt that there were some excuses for the horse given that it was required to travel wide and without cover for the majority of the race. When questioned as to the reason for removing the visor from MEGATRON, Mr Yiu stated that prior to its recent races the horse became stirred up in the Parade Ring and therefore they removed the visor to help the horse remain relaxed prior to the race. He said MEGATRON was better today in the pre-race parade, however, following the horse’s disappointing run, he would experiment with its gear to have it perform at its best. A veterinary inspection of MEGATRON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MEGATRON, a favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MEGATRON will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of GOOD FOR YOU immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
MEGATRON, MR KOOL and GENTRY were sent for sampling.

Race: 6 (150) PO CHONG WAN HANDICAP Class 3 1200 m
FORTUNE BOOTH was checked on jumping when crowded for room between TRIUMPHANT JEWEL and POWERMAX which, after being bumped by SUPER MAN which began awkwardly, then became unbalanced and shifted out away from that horse.
From a wide barrier, MR PICASSO was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Passing the 1000 Metres, TRIUMPHANT JEWEL got its head on the side and shifted out, resulting in RADIANT TREASURE being taken out onto HAPPY BAO BEI which was crowded for room inside YOUNG EMPIRE.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, POWERMAX was awkwardly placed inside the heels of YOUNG EMPIRE.
Passing the 250 Metres, FORTUNE BOOTH was shifted out away from the heels of GENERAL IRON which shifted out marginally under pressure.
Over the final 100 Metres, DOUBLE VALENTINE raced in restricted room between TRIUMPHANT JEWEL and GENERAL IRON and consequently was not able to be properly tested.
Throughout the race, YOUNG EMPIRE travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.
A veterinary inspection of SUPER MAN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of MR PICASSO immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm and had bled from both nostrils. Before being allowed to race again, MR PICASSO will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Throughout the race, MY BEGINNER’S LUCK travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.
After the race, M Chadwick reported that MONEY BOY made the turns, particularly the Home Turn, awkwardly and was inclined to lay out.
After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on MOMENT OF POWER at the request of Trainer P O’Sullivan. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, MOMENT OF POWER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of MY BEGINNER’S LUCK immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
MEGA HEART and E-SUPER were sent for sampling.

Race: 8 (152) TAI SHUE WAN HANDICAP Class 3 1650 m
GOLD LAND and UNICRON JEWELLERY bumped heavily at the start due to both horses shifting ground. UNICRON JEWELLERY then became unbalanced after making contact with GOLD LAND, resulting in the horse shifting out further and GOLD LAND losing ground. After this, GOLD LAND was ridden along, however, failed to muster speed and consequently raced towards the rear of the field.
Shortly after the start, AGREE was steadied away from the heels of RELENTLESS ME which shifted in.
After travelling a short distance, Apprentice H N Wong’s (GO GO WIN) right foot slipped out of the stirrup iron. Apprentice Wong was then unable to regain the use of his right iron for the remainder of the event, placing him at a significant disadvantage. Apprentice Wong explained that he made a number of attempts to regain the use of his right iron, however, was unable to do so. He said he did give consideration to taking his right hand off the reins in an attempt to regain control of the iron, however, GO GO WIN was travelling strongly and he felt that had he have taken his hand away from the reins, he may have lost some control of the horse and therefore he continued to try and regain the use of the iron by other means without success.
Near the 1150 Metres, THUNDER STOMP got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ULTIMATE GLORY.
UNICRON JEWELLERY was held up for a run in the early part of the Straight and passing the 250 Metres was checked away from the heels of GOLDEN SLEEP and shifted to the inside of that horse in an attempt to obtain clear running.
Passing the 300 Metres, FLYING QUEST got its head on the side and lay in, resulting in NITRO EXPRESS being hampered when racing tight to the inside of that horse.
From passing the 300 Metres until near the 200 Metres, RELENTLESS ME was unable to obtain clear running between AGREE and GO GO WIN.
For the majority of the race, GOLDEN SLEEP travelled wide and without cover.
After the race, O Doleuze stated that at its first attempt at the distance, JUMBO HAPPINESS, after being shifted across behind runners in the early stages from its awkward barrier, travelled only fairly and then did not finish off the race over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of JUMBO HAPPINESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of GOLD LAND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
THUNDER STOMP and FULL GLAMOUR were sent for sampling.

Race: 9 (153) WONG CHUK HANG HANDICAP Class 2 1650 m
From wide barriers, CHATER LEGEND, SICHUAN DAR and GONNA RUN were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Passing the 1100 Metres, SICHUAN DAR got its head up when proving difficult to settle and awkwardly placed close to the heels of FAITHFUL TRINITY.
Near the 150 Metres, STAR MAJESTIC was shifted to the outside of LITTERATEUR after being disappointed for running between that horse and CHATER LEGEND which shifted out.
When questioned, D Whyte (LITTERATEUR) stated that in the run to the winning post on the first occasion he attempted to obtain a trailing position towards the rear of the field, however, passing the winning post on the first occasion LITTERATEUR commenced to prove very difficult to settle and when SPEEDY LONGWAH was steadied by its rider in an attempt to obtain cover, he was unable to shift LITTERATEUR in to obtain cover behind that horse due to the manner in which LITTERATEUR was racing and the fact that SPEEDY LONGWAH was coming back towards LITTERATEUR. He said, despite his best efforts, he was unable to get LITTERATEUR to steady sufficiently to obtain cover behind SPEEDY LONGWAH which resulted in LITTERATEUR racing wide and without cover. He said after the 1200 Metres he continued to try and have LITTERATEUR settled to obtain cover, however, the horse continued to prove very difficult to restrain and he felt that LITTERATEUR’s best interests would be better served by allowing the horse to improve its position in the field rather than continuing to fight against the horse towards the rear of the field. He added for this reason he allowed LITTERATEUR to improve its position after the 1000 Metres, however, LITTERATEUR continued to race wide and without cover for the remainder of the race.
When questioned, N Rawiller stated that he had ridden SPEEDY LONGWAH in a barrier trial on the All Weather Track in the lead up to this race and the horse had begun exceptionally well, led the trial and performed well. He said because SPEEDY LONGWAH had performed well when ridden in a forward position in the trial, he was asked today to ride SPEEDY LONGWAH in a forward position and accordingly he rode his mount positively in the early stages. He said after riding SPEEDY LONGWAH hard, the horse did not show any early speed and was unable to improve its position forward of PERPETUAL JOYANCE which was drawn immediately to the inside of SPEEDY LONGWAH. He said because SPEEDY LONGWAH showed no early speed, he commenced to shift his mount across behind runners approaching the winning post on the first occasion and was left racing in a three wide position outside FAITHFUL TRINITY. He said he attempted to steady his mount to obtain cover behind that horse as SPEEDY LONGWAH was racing in a three wide position, however, SICHUAN DAR was ridden along to improve its position inside SPEEDY LONGWAH and his mount was therefore left racing wide and without cover in the early stages. He added SPEEDY LONGWAH was not comfortable on today’s surface and appeared to him to "jar up” as the horse did not stretch out as it did when he had ridden it in the barrier trial. He said because of the manner in which SPEEDY LONGWAH was travelling, the horse became detached from the field along the Back Straight. He said whilst the horse made up some ground in the early part of the Straight, SPEEDY LONGWAH did not stretch out and remained at the rear of the field. A veterinary inspection of SPEEDY LONGWAH immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of STAR MAJESTIC immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
STAR MAJESTIC, THE GOLDEN AGE and SICHUAN DAR were sent for sampling.

Race: 10 (154) YIP FAT HANDICAP Class 2 1200 m

SEA JADE and DALRADIAN bumped on jumping.
Shortly after the start, HOUSE OF FUN shifted out and bumped SOUTHERN LEGEND.
From wide barriers, SOUTHERN LEGEND and MR GENUINE were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
Near the 850 Metres, HOUSE OF FUN was steadied away from the heels of VERBINSKY (S Clipperton) which shifted in when not properly clear. After this, HOUSE OF FUN was awkwardly placed close to the heels of VERBINSKY. S Clipperton was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is properly clear of other runners prior to shifting ground in similar circumstances.
Approaching and passing the 500 Metres, MR GENUINE got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of LINE SEEKER.
Passing the 300 Metres, JUMBO LUCK raced in restricted room inside DALRADIAN when improving into tight running inside that horse.
Passing the 200 Metres, LINE SEEKER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SEA JADE after being disappointed for running between that horse and MR GENUINE which improved quickly to the inside of LINE SEEKER. Then passing the 150 Metres, LINE SEEKER was checked when attempting to improve between MR GENUINE and SEA JADE where there was insufficient room.
For the majority of the race, ALMABABY travelled wide and without cover.
SOUTHERN LEGEND and MR GENUINE were sent for sampling.

General
1. 14 October 2017 Sha Tin Racemeeting – Race 8 (116)
At the racemeeting on 14 October 2017, the Stewards informed Mr T P Yung, the trainer of FORTUNE BO BO and SUPER JUNIOR, that they would review the previous racing history of both horses before deciding on the most appropriate way for the inquiry into the manner in which those horses were ridden to proceed. After reviewing the racing history of particularly FORTUNE BO BO, the Stewards accepted that Mr Yung’s instructions for that horse to lead SUPER JUNIOR were appropriate in the circumstances given that FORTUNE BO BO had led or raced in a forward position in a number of its races and in particular in a number of its race wins. In respect of SUPER JUNIOR racing on the inside rail and the pre-race intention for FORTUNE BO BO to race similarly towards the inside rail, the Stewards took no further action other than to advise Mr Yung of the importance to have regard to all the relevant factors when providing his riders with instructions in the future so as to ensure that horses are given every opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible placing.
