GOLD VELVET began awkwardly.
DON WONGCHOY began only fairly and then, despite being ridden along in the early stages, failed to muster speed.
From a wide barrier, NOTED PERFORMER was shifted across behind runners in the early stages to obtain cover.
Also from the outside barrier, VICTORY FOLLOW ME was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners, however, throughout the race travelled wide and without cover.
Passing the 1500 Metres, INVISIBLE raced in restricted room between DOUBLE POINT and GOLD TALENT when being steadied to obtain a trailing position behind DOUBLE POINT.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, DOUBLE POINT was steadied to avoid the heels of DUTCH WINDMILL (J Moreira) which shifted in when not properly clear. J Moreira was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he gives proper clearance when shifting ground.
Passing the 1400 Metres, DON WONGCHOY got its head up when travelling keenly and awkwardly placed behind GOLD TALENT.
Near the 550 Metres, DUTCH WINDMILL raced tight between VICTORY FOLLOW ME and FRUITFUL LIFE which attempted to shift out from behind FAITHFUL BOY. In this incident, DUTCH WINDMILL bumped VICTORY FOLLOW ME which became unbalanced. When FRUITFUL LIFE was unable to shift to the outside of FAITHFUL BOY, DOUBLE POINT, which was following FRUITFUL LIFE, became awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse in consequence.
Approaching the 400 Metres, INVISIBLE and FRUITFUL LIFE raced tight.
At the entrance to the Straight, DUTCH WINDMILL was crowded for room between VICTORY FOLLOW ME and FAITHFUL BOY which, when under pressure, shifted out away from CHOICE EXCHEQUER after initially being taken out by that horse which made the Home Turn awkwardly. In this incident, VICTORY FOLLOW ME became unbalanced after being bumped by DUTCH WINDMILL and shifted in, resulting in DUTCH WINDMILL being further crowded for room and shifting in, causing FAITHFUL BOY to be steadied when taken in close to the heels of CHOICE EXCHEQUER. PLANET GIANT, which was following CHOICE EXCHEQUER, was also awkwardly placed behind that horse and passing the 300 Metres was shifted to the inside of CHOICE EXCHEQUER to obtain clear running.
Approaching the 200 Metres, GOLD VELVET was shifted out away from the heels of FAITHFUL BOY to continue improving.
Near the 75 Metres, FRUITFUL LIFE was awkwardly placed inside the heels of DOUBLE POINT which shifted in under pressure.
A veterinary inspection of DON WONGCHOY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
VICTORY FOLLOW ME, DUTCH WINDMILL and DOUBLE POINT were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (084) QUARRY BAY HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m
SHARPMIND was slow to begin and shifted out on jumping and in doing so bumped the hindquarters of I’M A WITNESS which became unbalanced.
AUTOPAY began awkwardly.
Shortly after the start, LONDON CITY shifted out and hampered HAPPY HAPPY and SO GENEROUS. After this, from the outside barriers, both HAPPY HAPPY and SO GENEROUS were shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
ENJOY LIFE was steadied in the early stages to obtain a position closer to the rail.
Near the 1000 Metres, ENJOY LIFE, which initially attempted to improve inside NEVER BETTER, was steadied when momentarily tightened inside that horse.
Near the 850 Metres, SO GENEROUS (W M Lai) shifted in, resulting in HAPPY HAPPY being crowded for room between SO GENEROUS and EVER STRONG. W M Lai then directed SO GENEROUS out abruptly to relieve the tightening to HAPPY HAPPY. The crowding to HAPPY HAPPY was then exacerbated by EVER STRONG shifting out marginally. Whilst the Stewards acknowledged that W M Lai had made a satisfactory effort to shift SO GENEROUS out to relieve the pressure to HAPPY HAPPY, nonetheless he was advised to ensure that he makes every effort to prevent his mount from shifting ground in similar circumstances.
OTOUTO travelled wide and without cover until passing 600 Metres after which LONDON CITY was left racing wide and without cover.
Near the 150 Metres, OTOUTO, which was giving ground, was checked away from the heels of EVER STRONG which, after initially being taken out by ENJOY LIFE (M L Yeung), then shifted out away from that horse. M L Yeung was severely reprimanded and advised that whilst there were some circumstances to this incident, nonetheless he must ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground.
Near the 50 Metres, EVER STRONG was momentarily awkwardly placed outside the heels of ENJOY LIFE which shifted out under pressure.
After the race, Apprentice H T Mo (AUTOPAY) advised that his saddle shifted back in the early stages, placing him at a disadvantage, particularly making the first turn when for some distance after the 1000 Metres AUTOPAY proved very difficult to settle and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of LONDON CITY (K Teetan) which shifted in when barely clear. Whilst the Stewards accepted that AUTOPAY was particularly difficult to settle, nonetheless K Teetan was advised to ensure that he provides proper clearance when shifting ground. After the race, it was noted that Apprentice Mo’s saddle had shifted back considerably. Then for some distance approaching and passing the 900 Metres, AUTOPAY continued to prove very difficult to settle and repeatedly got its head up when being checked away from the heels of LONDON CITY. This resulted in AUTOPAY shifting out across the heels of LONDON CITY after the 800 Metres. AUTOPAY continued to prove very difficult to settle when racing wide and without cover throughout the middle stages. A veterinary inspection of AUTOPAY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
When questioned, K Teetan stated that given LONDON CITY’s wide barrier and the speed anticipated to be shown by horses that were more favourably drawn, namely EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE, I’M A WITNESS, OTOUTO and possibly AUTOPAY, it was felt that LONDON CITY would have to do too much work to overcome the wide barrier were it to be ridden along to cross runners to obtain a position near the lead. He said he was therefore asked to obtain a position with cover and it was hoped that LONDON CITY may be able to obtain cover in midfield or slightly better. He said LONDON CITY began very well, however, he immediately noticed that, as expected, EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE, I’M A WITNESS and particularly OTOUTO were being hard ridden in the early stages and he felt that even though LONDON CITY had jumped well, he would have had to place pressure on the horse to be able to cross those runners to his inside. He said he therefore steadied LONDON CITY and was able to obtain a position three wide after the 1000 Metres but with cover behind OTOUTO. Trainer D E Ferraris confirmed the instructions given to Jockey Teetan. He said he felt the race would be run at a good tempo with a number of well-drawn horses having previously shown good early speed in their races. He said he therefore asked Jockey Teetan to obtain a position with cover behind the speed if possible as he felt that were LONDON CITY to be ridden forward, the horse would not be able to then finish off its race. He said, given the manner in which LONDON CITY began tonight, he would have accepted Jockey Teetan taking the initiative and attempting to go forward on LONDON CITY, however, this would have been contrary to the instructions he had given prior to the race.
I’M A WITNESS, EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE and SHARPMIND were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (085) SAI WAN HO HANDICAP Class 4 1800 m
BALAY BALAY and CROWN AVENUE bumped at the start.
KING WINSA began only fairly.
TRENDY WIN shifted in at the start and bumped PREMIUM CHAMPION which became unbalanced.
From wide barriers, HAPPY ROCKY and KING BOUNTIFUL were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Passing the 1100 Metres, BALAY BALAY and CROWN AVENUE raced tight.
Passing the 800 Metres, BALAY BALAY and CROWN AVENUE again raced tight as BALAY BALAY shifted to the outside of HAPPY AND HEALTHY.
Approaching the 100 Metres, CROWN AVENUE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of HAPPY AND HEALTHY.
When questioned, J Moreira stated that as he was having his first race ride on UNIQUE HAPPIEST tonight, he had studied the horse’s previous starts and formed the impression that the horse was one-paced. He added that this was confirmed to him by Trainer K W Lui prior to the race. He said it was always intended therefore for UNIQUE HAPPIEST to be ridden along earlier than otherwise might be the case so that the horse did not get left flat-footed were any other horses to challenge UNIQUE HAPPIEST mid-race. He said in the early stages he was able to obtain the position outside the leader HAPPY AND HEALTHY and passing the 800 Metres commenced to ride his mount along with a view to crossing that horse in the hope that UNIQUE HAPPIEST would be able to gain an advantage over the rest of the field given the horse is one-paced. He said it took some time for UNIQUE HAPPIEST to be able to cross HAPPY AND HEALTHY as that horse maintained its position inside UNIQUE HAPPIEST until approaching the 600 Metres. He said he felt that the tempo of the race leading up to the 800 Metres had not been strong and therefore it was in the best interests of UNIQUE HAPPIEST to dictate the tempo of the race after the 800 Metres rather than waiting for the horse to be challenged by other runners improving their positions.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BO DUKE, S Clipperton stated that it had been intended for the horse to be ridden in a forward position from the outside draw. He said after riding his mount hard in the early stages, the tempo of the race was quicker than he expected and BO DUKE did not have sufficient speed to be able to go forward of UNIQUE HAPPIEST on its inside and therefore after the 1600 Metres he shifted BO DUKE across behind CROWN AVENUE to obtain a position with cover in advance of midfield. He said whilst this was slightly further back in the field than had been intended, nonetheless BO DUKE travelled very comfortably until near the 800 Metres at which time UNIQUE HAPPIEST was ridden along in the lead. He said as soon as the pace of the race increased, BO DUKE immediately came off the bridle and, despite being ridden along, would not improve its position. He added he had to ride BO DUKE vigorously after the 700 Metres in order to have the horse improve to be racing behind CROWN AVENUE, however, BO DUKE would not respond to his riding and gave ground noticeably from rounding the Home Turn. He said whilst the tempo of the race in the middle stages might not have suited BO DUKE, nonetheless the horse was very disappointing in that it came off the bridle some distance from the finish. A veterinary inspection of BO DUKE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of BO DUKE, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BO DUKE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of BALAY BALAY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
PREMIUM CHAMPION and KING BOUNTIFUL were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (086) QUARRY BAY HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 4 1200 m

Shortly after the start, ROYAL CHOCOLATE, which was being eased, was further steadied away from the heels of LOVE CHUNGHWA which was taken out by OUR HERO which in turn was taken out by CHEERFULJET which shifted out after being bumped by BUDDY BUNDY.
From a wide barrier, PLANET STAR was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
Making the turn near the 1000 Metres, RIVERSIDE BIRD got its head on the side and shifted out towards the heels of OUR HERO, resulting in RIVERSIDE BIRD being awkwardly placed inside that horse for a short distance and losing ground.
CHEERFULJET hung out making the turn after the 1000 Metres. PHANTOM FALCON, which was racing outside the heels of CHEERFULJET, was hampered when taken wider by that horse.
PHANTOM FALCON travelled wide and without cover until after the 700 Metres.
At the entrance to the Straight, PLANET STAR was shifted in away from the heels of BEAR CHUM to obtain clear running.
Near the 150 Metres, MAGICAL CHAMPION was steadied when held up for clear running behind PLANET STAR and BUDDY BUNDY which was giving ground. MAGICAL CHAMPION was then unable to obtain clear running until over the concluding stages and consequently was not able to be properly tested.
ROYAL CHOCOLATE was held up for clear running from approaching the 100 Metres until after passing the 50 Metres.
For the majority of the race, SKY TREASURE travelled wide and without cover.
After the race, Apprentice M F Poon (BUDDY BUNDY) stated that when placed under pressure in the early part of the Straight, his mount was not entirely comfortable in its action and then did not stretch out over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of BUDDY BUNDY immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, BUDDY BUNDY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Also after the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that BEAR CHUM had bled from both nostrils.
PHANTOM FALCON, MANFUL STAR and LOVE CHUNGHWA were sent for sampling.

After being loaded into the barriers, GENERAL IRON became fractious and broke through the front gates. GENERAL IRON travelled a short distance before being restrained and returned to the Start at which time the horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said that it was suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, GENERAL IRON will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
NAVAS began only fairly.
LOTUS BREEZE also began only fairly and for some distance after the start was ridden along to obtain a forward position. LOTUS BREEZE subsequently travelled wide and without cover throughout the race and in the Straight gave ground.
SHALLUCK and MR PICASSO bumped at the start.
From the outside barriers, GENERAL IRON and RADIANT TREASURE were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Making the turn passing the 1000 Metres, TRAVEL DATUK was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SHALLUCK which lay out.
RADIANT TREASURE raced ungenerously throughout the early and middle stages.
For some distance approaching and passing the 800 Metres, SHALLUCK travelled keenly and got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of BACK IN BLACK.
MR PICASSO was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOOD COMPANION.
Approaching the 200 Metres, MR PICASSO was shifted to the inside of JUMBO HAPPINESS to obtain clear running and approaching the 100 Metres was momentarily awkwardly placed inside the heels of JUMBO HAPPINESS when attempting to improve into a tight run between that horse and BURST AWAY.
For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, RADIANT TREASURE, which was finishing off the race fairly, lay out under pressure and shifted out towards GENERAL IRON (T Berry). RADIANT TREASURE continued to lay out and passing the 150 Metres as its rider, M L Yeung, attempted to use the whip in the left hand, his whip made contact with the neck of GENERAL IRON. For this reason, M L Yeung was obliged to stop riding RADIANT TREASURE to straighten that horse.
After being held up for clear running passing the 100 Metres, NAVAS was shifted to the outside of BURST AWAY passing the 50 Metres to continue improving.
When questioned, S Clipperton stated that he had been asked to take advantage of BACK IN BLACK’s inside draw and obtain a position forward of midfield if possible. He said after beginning well, he only had to ride BACK IN BLACK along for a short distance in the early stages to establish its position and after this BACK IN BLACK travelled comfortably in a position behind the leaders.
A veterinary inspection of LOTUS BREEZE and TRAVEL DATUK immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
JUMBO HAPPINESS and MR PICASSO were sent for sampling.

Race: 6 (088) NORTH POINT HANDICAP Class 3 1650 m
RAZOR QUEST was slow to begin.
From the outside barrier, QUICK RETURN was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
HEROIC GURU was steadied in the early stages to obtain a position with cover.
Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, THE SYLPH got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of NITRO EXPRESS (C Schofield) which shifted in when not properly clear. C Schofield was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he gives proper clearance when shifting ground.
Passing the 1000 Metres, MASTER GOLD commenced to prove very difficult to settle and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of ISHVARA. MASTER GOLD continued to be awkwardly placed behind ISHVARA for a short distance after this.
For the majority of the race, GOLDEN SLEEP travelled wide and without cover.
The Stewards considered a protest/objection lodged by J Moreira, the rider of the second placed, THE SYLPH, and Mr D E Ferraris, the trainer of that horse, against STAR MAJESTIC (B Prebble), first placegetter, alleging interference passing the 200 Metres. After taking evidence from all parties concerned and after viewing the videos, it was established that after the 300 Metres THE SYLPH was able to establish running to the inside of STAR MAJESTIC. It was further established that near the 175 Metres THE SYLPH was hampered by STAR MAJESTIC which shifted in. THE SYLPH was then directed to the outside of STAR MAJESTIC passing the 150 Metres, however, when that horse shifted back out under pressure, THE SYLPH was then directed back to the inside of STAR MAJESTIC at the 100 Metres. Having regard to the positioning of the horses near the 175 Metres, the manner in which both horses finished off the race and the three quarter length margin between STAR MAJESTIC and THE SYLPH at the end of the race, the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred THE SYLPH would have beaten STAR MAJESTIC and accordingly the protest/objection was overruled with weighed-in confirmed on the numbers notified by the Judge. At a subsequent inquiry, B Prebble pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 175 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of THE SYLPH, causing that horse to be hampered when unnecessarily crowded for room inside STAR MAJESTIC. B Prebble was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 25 October 2017 and to expire on Monday, 30 October 2017 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Prebble’s good race riding record.
STAR MAJESTIC and THE SYLPH were sent for sampling.

Race: 7 (089) CAUSEWAY BAY HANDICAP Class 3 1000 m

From the outside barriers, WAYFOONG VINNIE, RACING MATE and MOST BEAUTIFUL were steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, OCULIST lost ground when momentarily crowded for room inside DIEGO KOSTA which was racing tight inside E-SUPER (T Berry) which shifted in. T Berry was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners on his inside in similar circumstances. RACING MATE, which was following, was checked away from the heels of OCULIST in consequence.
Making the turn after the 500 Metres, MR RIGHT got its head on the side and lay out.
The Stewards inquired into an incident near the 350 Metres in which KEEP MOVING (N Callan) clipped the heels of BEAUTY MASTER (Apprentice M F Poon) and blundered. After taking evidence from both riders, the Stewards accepted that Jockey Callan’s evidence that in the lead up to this incident, he did not pursue the run to the inside of BEAUTY MASTER as he intended to shift to that horse’s outside rounding the Home Turn. The Stewards further accepted that approaching the 350 Metres Jockey Callan directed KEEP MOVING out across the heels of BEAUTY MASTER which was being allowed to shift in by Apprentice Poon. The Stewards, in the circumstances, believed that the incident was attributable to both horses shifting ground, however, Apprentice Poon was advised that at this stage he was allowing his mount to drift in in the mistaken belief that he was fully clear of KEEP MOVING as that horse was being directed out. Apprentice Poon was reminded of his obligation to ensure that he is properly clear prior to shifting ground.
Passing the 200 Metres, WAYFOONG VINNIE was steadied when disappointed for running between THOR THE GREATEST and DIEGO KOSTA (J Moreira) which shifted in. WAYFOONG VINNIE was then directed to the outside of DIEGO KOSTA to continue improving. Whilst the Stewards were of the opinion that WAYFOONG VINNIE had not fully established running between DIEGO KOSTA and THOR THE GREATEST, nonetheless J Moreira was advised in similar circumstances to make every effort to prevent his mount from shifting ground.
Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that the riding of Apprentice Poon, the rider of the 4th placegetter, BEAUTY MASTER, which lay out under pressure in the Straight, over the concluding stages did not affect the horse’s finishing position, he was nonetheless reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race where circumstances permit.
A veterinary inspection of MR RIGHT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
KEEP MOVING and E-SUPER were sent for sampling.

Race: 8 (090) TAI HANG HANDICAP Class 2 1800 m

Passing the 300 Metres, NASSA and SUPREME PROFIT bumped as NASSA attempted to improve between SUPREME PROFIT and CHATER LEGEND where there was not sufficient room. After this, NASSA and SUPREME PROFIT raced tight for some distance as J Moreira, the rider of NASSA, continued to improve into tight running which was commencing to develop between CHATER LEGEND and SUPREME PROFIT approaching the 200 Metres. Then after passing the 200 Metres, NASSA was steadied when unable to improve between CHATER LEGEND and SUPREME PROFIT which was taken in marginally by MARVEL HERO. NASSA was then unable to obtain clear running until over the concluding stages and consequently was not able to be properly tested.
Near the 250 Metres, SUPER CHIC was brushed by DINOZZO which shifted out.
Near the 50 Metres, SUPREME PROFIT was eased to avoid the heels of MARVEL HERO which, after initially shifting in of its own accord, was then taken in by DINOZZO (S Clipperton) which shifted in under pressure. S Clipperton was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
After the race, C Schofield reported that DR LISTENING had been very disappointing in tonight’s race. He said the horse travelled satisfactorily in the early and middle stages and although awkwardly placed outside the heels of MARVEL HERO when taken wider by that horse passing the 700 Metres, DR LISTENING then came under pressure after the 600 Metres and then was most disappointing in the horse’s failure to respond to his riding at any stage. He said he continued to ride DR LISTENING along rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, however, the horse did not quicken and was disappointing in its failure to finish off the race. He added both during and after the race DR LISTENING felt comfortable in its action and as such he was not able to offer any excuse for the horse’s disappointing run. Trainer D E Ferraris was unable to offer any reason for the disappointing performance of DR LISTENING. He said the horse had not missed any track work since its last run and although it was marginally up in body weight tonight, it had performed to his expectation in track work. A veterinary inspection of DR LISTENING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY PRINCE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of INVENTOR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
