Kent facing tough Supido choice
17 Jul 2017 | By Andrew Eddy - racing.com

Mick Kent has been further drawn into the fierce battle for the Melbourne jockeys' title, with the trainer likely to be forced into a delicate choice of new rider for his sprint star Supido.

Regular rider Luke Nolen is likely to be unavailable to ride the speedster in the final meeting of the season in the Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield on July 29 due to holiday commitments, meaning Kent will have to decide whether Craig Williams will again be called up as a replacement in the Group 3 event.

Williams has ridden Supido four times for three wins but as Kent is the master of current title leader Beau Mertens - who is just one win in front of Williams in the Melbourne premiership race - the trainer faces a real dilemma.

And given the way Supido returned to racing with a dominant Monash Stakes win at Caulfield last Saturday, the entire is likely to go around a hot favourite and maybe even odds-on to also win the Bletchingly.

"That could be a tricky one," Kent conceded on Monday. "If Luke doesn't ride him, Craig generally does so that might give us a bit to think about moving onto the Bletchingly."

Kent has other choices to make with the horse, who has been restricted to just 13 starts due to niggling injuries early in his career.

Supido is yet to race beyond 1200 metres but Kent said the horse could make his 1400-metre debut in the $1 million Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on September 2.

"I've always thought he'd get a lot further in what he's shown us at home and by Memsie time, he'll be up and about and it's a race that could suit him because he could take a spot anywhere," Kent explained.

But the Cranbourne trainer said he had long considered Supido a Group 1 horse and was keen to make sure he was in the right races as there were numerous elite race targets for the horse this spring.

"We'll just see how he gets through the Bletchingly and make a call from there," Kent said.
