Victorian stables have half of the 14 nominations for the $1.5m, Group 1 WFA The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday headed up by the Group 1 Australian Cup winner Humidor (NZ) and Group 2 Sky High Stakes winner Tavago (NZ).
Darren Weir’s Humidor won the WFA 2000m contest at Flemington on March 11th with a half-length margin over Caulfield Cup winner Jameka and Exospheric (GB), both of whom are also nominated by their respective Maher and Freedman stables.
The Lee and Anthony Freedman stable have also nominated last Saturday’s dominant Group 1 Ranvet Stakes winner Our Ivanhowe (GER). The Racing NSW stewards’ report from Saturday reported that Our Ivanhowe knuckled past the winning post and was found to be lame in the off-foreleg with a veterinary clearance required before Our Ivanhowe races again.
Tavago, trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, returned to winning form in no uncertain terms winning the Group 3 Sky High Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill on March 11th.
The four-year-old Tavistock gelding won with 3 1/4L in hand over Antonio Giuseppe (NZ) and Allergic, his first win since the 2016 Group 1 ATC Australian Derby over 2400m at Randwick last April 2nd.
The Hayes and Dabernig stable have nominated Almoonquith (USA) and Boom Time with the latter sixth in the Australian Cup.
The Waller stable have nominated Libran (IRE) who was fourth in the Sky High Stakes, Who Shot Thebarman (NZ), sixth in the Sky High Stakes and Grand Marshall (GB) who was ninth and last in the same race.
Magic Hurricane, eighth in the Sky High Stakes, is nominated by Godolphin as well as being nominated for the $150,000, Group 3 Daily Telegraph Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m), as is Boom Time.
VRC Derby winner Prized Icon is also dual nominated for both The BMW and the $200,000, Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m).
The Tulloch Stakes received 20 nominations on Monday and the Neville Sellwood received 19. Nominations are extended for The BMW and the $150,000, Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) with 14 on Monday. The winner of the Prelude is exempt from a ballot for the Group 1 The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 1st.
The other Group 1 feature on Saturday is the $500,000, Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and 20 fillies have been nominated.
Overall 150 nominations were received on Monday for the nine race programme.
The Rosehill track is currently rated a Heavy 10 after 1mm of rain for the last 24 hours and 112mm for the last seven days.
Sydney’s forecast for the week still has rain predicted for each day. Tuesday’s forecast is for a cloudy day with a high (80%) chance of showers with 2mm-5mm and 28c. Wednesday’s is for a sunny morning and a high (80%) chance of showers in the afternoon and evening, the chance of a thunderstorm with 2mm-6mm and 29c.
Thursday is forecast to be cloudy with a medium (60%) chance of showers with 0mm-1mm and 23c, Friday is partly cloudy with a high (70%) chance of showers with 1mm-4mm and 23c. Saturday’s forecast is for a partly cloudy day with a medium (60%) chance of showers with 0mm-3mm and 17c-24c.
