Lightning win to spell end for Star Turn?
17 Feb 2017 | By Andrew Eddy -

One Group 1 win might be enough for brilliant three-year-old Star Turn to quit the racetrack, according to his co-trainer Wayne Hawkes.

Hawkes told on Friday that there was a chance the colt's track career could be terminated if he was to win Saturday's Black Caviar Lightning as connections look forward to next season when he stands as one of the headliners at the NSW property of his co-owner Vinery Stud.

"We haven't spoken about it to be honest but I reckon Makybe Diva was as good as it got," Hawke said.

"She won a (third) Melbourne Cup and said 'see you later' and I reckon that was fantastic and so I wouldn't be upset if, after the race, everyone went 'we've done our jobs, so let's retire him'.

"We know we are going to see him less than more because he's done his job."

Hawkes said his confidence in Star Turn being able to win his Group 1 on Saturday has come from the colt's performance in last spring's Coolmore and from the way the Star Witness colt looks.

"He looks really, really good for his first-up effort," he said.

"It's always hard to know but if you had to ask me I'd say he's improved but then to be fair to the other thee-year-old (Flying Artie), he's probably improved as well."

Hawkes said he believed Star Turn was luckless in last spring's Coolmore.

"His run up the straight was great in the Coolmore when he led the field up," he said.

"It wasn't his fault or Dwayne's (Dunn) fault. He just jumped too keen and was just too keen. If he had of sat behind and had the winner's (Flying Artie) run, I reckon the reverse would have happened. We would have won and the other horse would have got beat.

"The other horse was too good on the day, but it is very difficult in those 1200s to cart the field up and that's what he did and still finished third."

CrownBet has marked the Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Flying Artie ($4.60) slightly ahead of Star Turn ($4.80) for the prized 1000-metre sprint.
