The Sir John Monash Stakes is the feature this weekend which means, despite being the middle of July, the drip feed of spring horses is about to begin.

Supido is the headline act in the feature. A genuine Group-level sprinter who, with a Timeform rating of 114, can lay claim to being the best horse at the meeting (along with Kenjorwood who has the same master rating but rarely gets the chance to show it these days).

Supido provides a little bit of star power for this time of year but at his early quote in the Monash he looks neither a buy or sell and so we press on to the rest of the card in search of better gambles.

What we hope is one of those better gambles comes up in the fifth race on the card where Coldstone should find the 1700m an ideal trip.

After a leisurely gallop around Sandown second-up Coldstone has found himself in three high-octane races in a row, giving a good account of himself in all three and winning his latest.

He had a favourable run last time but he's fairly likely to get similar favours this time around and those three hard fought races look to have him battle-hardened and ready for a showdown with Show A Star. He probably concedes a map advantage to Show A Star, and there is little between them on ratings, but there looks more in the locker of Coldstone and he's a good bet at the current odds.

For an each way play we roll on to the last where the Chris Waller-trained Invinzabeel piques our interest.

He was a complete flop last time but pulled up with an atrial fibrillation so it's easy enough to rule a line through that run. What is interesting is that he held his place in the market there at 8-1 in a race that looked much harder to win than the one he tackles this week.

From the minimum his best ratings are as good as anything in the line up and he looks a decent each way shout around the $10.00 mark.
