Shoals a Shore thing for Freedman's
18 Mar 2017 | By Andrew Eddy - racing.com
A $1.9 million gamble on a failed racehorse has paid early dividends for two of Australia’s largest breeders and owners in Jonathan Munz and John Messara.

The pair paid that extraordinary amount for a mare The Broken Shore, who promised more than what her form guide showed. Her racing record of one win from 10 starts is overwhelmed by the blood that races through her veins as she is a half sister to champion racehorse and stallion Redoute’s Choice.

An extra on the deal was that The Broken Shore was sold in foal to super stallion Fastnet Rock and that foal grabbed her first chance at black type when she won the group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Flemington.

Shoals was heavily supported as she officially firmed from $3.40 to $2.70 but as much as $7 was available early in the week on her.

Trainer Lee Freedman said that as John Messara is heavily involved with the filly, he expected the former Australian Turf Club chairman to want the filly to race over The Championships at Randwick next month.

The Broken Shore has a yearling filly and a weanling colt, both by Fastnet Rock. She was served by Medaglia D’Oro last season.

Only 20 minutes earlier Freedman watched the television screen with much delight as his import Our Ivanhowe showed just what he can do when the conditions are right through a runaway victory in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes.

Freedman said that if the horse recovered well from the win and the wet weather remained in Sydney for the week, Our Ivanhowe was likely to back-up in next Saturday’s BMW.

‘’I never say a horse deserves a win, but this horse certainly has,’’ he said of Our Ivanhowe. ‘’It’s taken two years to get a heavy track and you could just see how much he loved it.’’
