Jungle helps Cartwright reign in the city
02 Dec 2017 | By Andrew Eddy - racing.com
Apprentice rider Georgina Cartwright joined the ever-growing Jungle Edge story when she scored her first metropolitan win on the popular horse in heavy 9 conditions at Sandown.

Jungle Edge was called back from the spelling paddock to tackle Saturday’s 1000-metre Le Pine Handicap because of the wet forecast and the seven-year-old revelled in his favourite conditions to score a soft victory.

Cartwright was engaged for the ride as she could claim three kilograms off the gelding’s 62 kilogram handicap and the 24-year-old ‘’late starter’’ to horse racing rode the perfect race to get the $2.40 favourite home by a widening two-and-a-half lengths.

‘’It’s a great thrill to bring up my first city win on a horse like him,’’ Cartwright said later. ‘’I was really excited when my manager rang me to tell me I had the ride.

‘’I was doing a rain dance but then I looked at the forecast and thought ‘oh no, they going to call them off’ but luckily we got through to our race.’’

Coming back 400 metres from his Sandown win two weeks ago, Jungle Edge did not challenge Gun Case for the early lead with Cartwright content to keep him comfortable. During the race she recalled the words the horse’s regular rider Kevin Forrester had told her.

‘’He just said to kid to him and to talk to him and to have fun and I sure did,’’ she said.

Trainer Mick Bell has twice sent Jungle Edge to the paddock this campaign only to retrieve him when suitable races and conditions have emerged.

Despite wanting to give the horse a break before next year’s carnivals, he has kept the door open for one more run for 2017 in a $100,000 1200-metre race on next Saturday’s Pakenham Cup meeting at Racing.com Park.

‘’But he’d have to do really well during the week,’’ Bell explained.

Jungle Edge has now won four races at Sandown among his 13 victories and his earnings have now topped $825,000.
