Mark Zahra has undeniable claims of taking Victoria's first Group 1 race of the season after being booked to ride Sydney veteran Happy Clapper in the $1 million Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on September 1.
Zahra, who has not ridden the horse previously, was booked by Randwick trainer Pat Webster for the Memsie following the serious neck injury to regular rider Blake Shinn at Monday's Randwick trials.
The ride on Happy Clapper is a good one for 38-year-old Zahra as he has potential to either go to the $13 million The Everest or a host of suitable middle-distance weight-for-age races in both Sydney and Melbourne following the Memsie.
Happy Clapper, a winner of more than $6 million in stakes, has an international rating of 123, placing him equal-ninth in the Longines Best Racehorse award.
Last autumn's Doncaster Handicap winner was given an easy time when fourth in a trial at Randwick on Monday.
