Williams in full swing

Melbourne's leading jockey, Craig Williams, is poised to enjoy his most successful month in the saddle and history suggests the best might still be to come.

With two city meetings remaining this month, the 41-year-old has ridden 11 Melbourne winners during June at an incredible strike-rate of 28.9 per cent.

Williams is set to ride two favourites at Sandown Hillside on Wednesday and has been booked to ride three last-start winners at Caulfield on Saturday - Morrissy, Shrouded In Mist and Highland Beat.

Historically, Williams rides his best during June and July, particularly when locked in a premiership battle.

He rode 14 winners from 55 rides (25.5 per cent) in July 2016 when toppling Dwayne Dunn (70 to 66 wins) to claim the 2015/16 premiership and that haul of 14 victories remains his highest number of wins in a single calendar month.

Williams then rode 20 winners, at a strike-rate of 19.6 per cent, during June and July 2017, to beat apprentice Beau Mertens (77 to 73 wins) for the title.

He also shaded Damian Lane (63 to 57 wins) last season by winning 18 races, at a strike-rate of 23.1 per cent, between June and July 2018.

Williams has effectively already won his eighth Melbourne premiership as he holds a 15-win lead over nearest rival Damien Oliver.

However, Williams is particularly prolific during July. He has ridden 37 winners in the final month of the season over the past three years and a $10 win bet on all his rides in that period would have returned a $643.50 profit based on official starting prices.
