RACE 1: Territories @ Darley Handicap 1400m:

California August – Rider J. McDonald stated that he was able to obtain a favoured position behind the leaders with cover throughout the early stages. He added that when Avouch was restrained by its rider, this resulted in California August being taken back in the field and losing ground on the leaders, particularly eventual winner, Broadside Armour. He said that California August was held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight before obtaining clear running passing the 200m. He added that California August when in clear running closed off its race strongly.

Avouch – Laid in under pressure in the straight, placing its rider at a disadvantage in fully testing the gelding. When questioned regarding her riding in the early and middle stages, App. C. Graham stated that she was under no specific instructions as to how to ride the gelding, which was having its first race start. She said that after beginning well she was able to obtain a position outside the leader, Super Bon, where her mount was racing keenly. She added that when she observed Broadside Armour improve to her outside, she restrained Avouch in an endeavour to obtain cover behind that runner. She said that as Avouch continued to race keenly the gelding proved somewhat reluctant to restrain, although she was able to obtain cover approaching the 700m. App. Graham agreed with Stewards that, bearing in mind the slow tempo throughout the early and middle stages and the manner in which her mount was racing, she had erred in restraining Avouch to allow Broadside Armour to cross, whereby the better option would have been to maintain her position outside the leader Super Bon throughout this section of the race.

Broadside Armour – Approaching the 200m shifted out under pressure, resulting in its rider having to change the whip to his left hand. Broadside Armour then continued to lay out under pressure in the straight.

Kinship – Began only fairly. Raced keenly in the early stages and approaching the 1100m was eased from the heels of Avouch (App. C. Graham) when that runner shifted in when not clear. App. Graham was advised to exercise more care. Kinship continued to race keenly and approaching the 1000m was hampered and taken wider by California August when that runner shifted out to obtain a position behind Avouch. Kinship then continue to race keenly throughout the middle stages.

Private Missile – Rider T. Berry reported that although his mount was slow to begin, he was able to obtain a favourable position behind the leaders throughout the event due to the slow tempo of the race. He added that the gelding travelled well throughout the run, however, was disappointing in the manner in which it finished off its race when under pressure from approaching the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow up on the post-race condition of the gelding.

Sisseck – Slow to begin and from a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Super Bon – A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Young Heart – Began only fairly. Raced keenly in the middle stages. On entering the home straight until approaching the 200m was shifted out in an endeavour to obtain clear running. Approaching the 150m, when unable to improve between Kinship and Sisseck, then was shifted to the inside whereby the gelding obtained clear running approaching the 50m.

Individualist – Slow to begin and was bumped on jumping by California August, which shifted out.

Wicked Willy – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.

RACE 2: Casino Prince @ Vinery Handicap 1600m:

Snips – Was a late scratching at 2.51pm when the gelding was found to be lame (2/5) in the near-foreleg. The Stewards ruled that all moneys invested on Snips be refunded in full and that all successful wagers made prior to 2.51pm be subject to the following deductions from the face value of each ticket:

1st Boomtown Rat          19¢ win, 18¢ place

2nd Judge Judi               17¢ place

3rd To Your Health         12¢ place

Trainer Mr D. Pfeiffer was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required before Snips is permitted to race/barrier trial again.

Judge Judi – Held up rounding the home turn and on straightening laid out and bumped the hindquarters of Toulouse. Judge Judi then was unable to obtain clear running until passing the 200m.

Zavance – Held up rounding the home turn and between the 300m and the 250m was checked to avoid the heels of Toulouse when endeavouring to improve into a run between that runner and Quality Approach. Zavance then was shifted to the inside of Toulouse and obtained clear running passing the 200m.

Boomtown Rat – Slow to begin.

To Your Health – On jumping was hampered by Toulouse, which shifted out.

Toulouse – Raced wide and without cover until approaching the 700m where the gelding was allowed to stride forward and assume a position outside the leader, To Your Health. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3: TAB Venue Mode Handicap 1400m:

Tracy May– Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages when racing wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

Whitchety Grub– Laid out under pressure passing the 200m, resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten his mount approaching the 150m.

Parineeti– A post-race veterinary examination of the filly, which weakened in the home straight, revealed the filly to be slow to recover

Parche– From the outside barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be slow to recover.

Chenin Blanc– Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn and on straightening was steadied from the heels of Whitchety Grub. Approaching the 300m was steadied from the heels of the weakening Parineeti and was shifted to the outside of that runner to continue into clear running.

Divine Intavention– Slow to begin and from a wide barrier then was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Held up over the final 50m behind the weakening Seraph.

Night Witches– Raced keenly in the middle stages. Approaching the 100m was eased when briefly crowded by Rose To Victory, which shifted out.

Maia Nebula– From a wide barrier was shifted behind runners in the early stages.

Saigon– As O. Orr was overweight, Stewards permitted J. Taylor to be substituted as the rider of the filly. O. Orr will be interviewed at a later date. Began only fairly. Raced keenly in the middle stages. For some distance after the 500m raced in restricted room between Aunty and Divine Intavention. Laid out under pressure in the early part of the straight.

Seraph– On jumping shifted out, bumped with All Saints' Eve and became unbalanced.

RACE 5: Schweppes Handicap 1200m:

Jack's Bar– Passing the 900m was eased from the heels of Redicon (App. B. Ryan) when that runner shifted in when not clear. B. Ryan was advised to exercise more care. For some distance after the 800m was awkwardly positioned at the heels of Redicon. Raced wide and without cover from the 700m. App. S. Clenton reported that she heard the gelding making an abnormal respiratory noise. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant abnormalities. Stable representative Mr D. Greer undertook to provide a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination.

Lifetime Quest– The gelding, which got its near-hind leg up on the running bar, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and deemed suitable to race.

Crafty Tycoon– Near the 500m was eased when crowded between Skyray and Jack's Bar, both of which shifted slight ground.

Balonne– Began awkwardly.

Skyray– Began only fairly and then was checked when crowded between Balonne and Redicon. Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.

Anubis– Shifted its near-hind plate in the tie-up stalls. After being replated Anubis was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and deemed suitable to race. On jumping was bumped by Crafty Tycoon, which shifted in. Held up rounding the home turn.

Aristograts– Stewards permitted K. Latham to ride the gelding one kilogram over its allotted weight of 54.5kgs. Trainer Mr G. Hickman was fined $100 under AR106(1) for presenting the gelding without winkers, which are part of its approved race gear. Slow to begin.

J. Taylor's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Saturday 25 January 2020 and to expire on Monday 27 January 2020 on which day she may ride. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be slow to recover. Stewards will follow up on the post-race condition of the mare.

Feather – Raced wide and without cover throughout the event. Laid out under pressure in the straight.

High Low Bet – K. McEvoy (Feather) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a) in that passing the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Rebukes, resulting in that runner being taken in, which caused High Low Bet, which was racing to the inside of Rebukes, having to be steadied and losing its rightful running. K. McEvoy's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 19 January 2020 and to expire on Monday 27 January 2020 on which day he may ride.
