RACE 4: Smithfield RSL Missile Stakes 1200m:
Vegadaze - trainer Mr A Cummings reported that a veterinary examination of Vegadaze, including an endoscopic examination, did not reveal any abnormalities. He stated that, in his opinion, Vegadaze was not suited by being becoming unbalanced at the 500m and this was the principal reason for its disappointing performance. Mr Cummings advised that Vegadaze would barrier trial at Newcastle on Monday 19 August 2019.
RACE 1: Press Statement @ Vinery Handicap 1300m:
Hulk – Began awkwardly and made contact with the offside partition of the barrier.
Apithanos – After beginning well was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Passing the 400m was crowded between Fast Melody and Reformist resulting in Apithanos becoming unbalanced and losing ground. Leaving the 300m was momentarily hampered when placed awkwardly at the heels of Reformist. Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.
Contango – Leaving the 400m was bumped when Hulk shifted out around the heels of Our Bellagio Miss to obtain clear running. When questioned regarding the colt’s performance J Collett stated that the colt was very worked up prior to the start and whilst he attempted to gain cover in the early stages, Contango was reluctant to settle and he was forced to take up the position outside the leader. J Collett added that whilst he received a bump from Hulk rounding the home turn, as he attempted to hold his position, his horse was under pressure at that time and tired in the home straight, proving disappointing today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Fast Melody – Slow to begin and was then shifted behind runners in the early stages. Was bumped and became momentarily unbalanced when Apithanos was taken out by Reformist, which shifted out to improve. Inclined to lay in when placed under pressure in the early part of the straight.
Finney – Shifted in behind runners in the early stages from its wide barrier. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be coughing. Trainer Mr B Baker advised that on return to the stable Finney was subjected to an upper airway endoscopic examination which failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Mr Baker advised that Finney would now be gelded and spelled.
Lewis – Held up rounding the home turn and laid in in the early stages of the straight, resulting in N Rawiller having difficulty shifting that horse to the outside of the heels of Hulk to improve.
Luvoir – Near the 800m improved onto the heels of Contango and had to be steadied.
Reformist – Began awkwardly and was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Raced fiercely in the early stages and leaving the 1200m shifted in when being restrained and bumped Fast Melody.
Todwick – Slow to begin and shortly after the start was hampered by What’s The Deel which shifted out. Rider S Clipperton reported that the filly raced greenly when placed under pressure in the early stages of the straight. Accordingly, he rode hands and heels in attempt to balance the filly and after doing so commenced to apply the whip passing the 100m at which stage Todwick finished the race off strongly.
Our Bellagio Miss – Stewards permitted K Latham to ride the filly 0.5kg over its
declared weight of 55kg. Began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with Contango.
RACE 2: Winter Racing Handicap 1600m:
Almerheri – Held up rounding the home turn and until near the 250m, at which stage it was shifted out around the heels of Achondrite to obtain clear running and Almerheri bumped Oribella on a number of occasions.
Shaman – Missed the start (3L) and then was further hampered when crowded by El Guerrouj which shifted in abruptly. Was held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, before being shifted to the outside of the heels of Le Lude near the 250m to obtain clear running.
Way Back When – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
El Guerrouj – Began awkwardly and was then shifted in behind runners in the early stages. For some distance leaving the 300m was awkwardly placed on the heels of Shaman when being shifted out in an endeavour to obtain clear running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
Oribella – Slow to begin. Raced wide and without cover until near the 1100m. Bumped on several occasions near the 250m and became unbalanced.
RACE 3: ANZ Bloodstock News Handicap 2200m:
High Power – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the gelding rider S Clenton stated that the gelding travelled comfortably towards the rear of the field in the early stages and when Fluidity commenced to forward move passing the 1100m she trailed that runner forward. She added that passing the 600m when Fluidity did not improve, she came to that runners outside and High Power travelled into the race well. She added that despite this upon entering the home straight the gelding was immediately under severe pressure and failed to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer K Lees informed Stewards that in his view the horse raced flat today and it was his intention to give the horse a freshen up before continuing with its preparation.
Jake’s Hill – Slow to begin.
Waka – Shifted in behind runners in the early stages from its wide barrier. Shifted out in the early part of the straight to continue into clear running.
Keep Up – Bounded on jumping and was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Was held up and unable to improve into the race for some distance approaching and rounding the home turn. Inclined to lay in under pressure in the early part of the straight.
Hirokin - Raced wide and without cover until approaching the 1600m.
Mushroom Rock – Slow to begin. Raced in restricted room for some distance leaving the 500m to the inside of Jake’s Hill when attempting to improve between that runner and Hirokin.
Notabadharada – Shortly after the start was crowded for room between Waka and Keep Up both of which shifted ground. Shifted in behind runners in the early stages from its wide barrier.
Fluidity – Shifted in behind runners in the early stages from the outside barrier. Rider C Reith reported that the mare over-raced in the early stages at the heels of High Power. He added that for this reason near the 1100m he shifted the mare out three wide to commence a forward move. However, Fluidity was under pressure passing the 800m and proved disappointing from that point on. Rider C Reith further added that in his view the mare did not appreciate the firmer surface today.
RACE 4: TAB Handicap 1400m:
Amanito – Shortly after the start was crowded for room between Silent General and Perfect Pitch which shifted out.
King Hewitt – Shifted in behind runners in the early stages from its wide barrier.
Silent General – Blundered on jumping and shortly after the start was crowded for room between Amanito and Lifetime Quest both of which shifted ground. As a result Silent General lost ground. Leaving the 200m was disappointed for a run between Cuba and Pitch Perfect when Cuba shifted in slightly. Silent General then raced in restricted room for some distance and was unable to be tested by its rider over the concluding stages.
Lincoln Sky – Shifted behind runners in the early stages from the outside barrier.
Lancaster Bomber – G Boss reported that his mount raced fiercely and refused to settle in the early and middle stages when attempting to gain cover. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover.
RACE 5: Street Boss @ Darley Handicap 1200m:
Bennelong Dancer – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance rider B McDougall stated that at no stage during the running of the event did Bennelong Dancer feel comfortable in its action and it was under severe pressure from the 800m and failed to respond to his riding the straight. Trainer D Scott stated that the mare had won a trial in preparation for the day’s event and it worked well leading up to the race and she expected a competitive performance from the mare first up. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be exhibiting a poor post-race recovery rate. Stewards deemed the performance of Bennelong Dancer to be unacceptable, even having regard to the veterinary findings subsequent to the race and ordered that Bennelong Dancer must trial before being permitted to race again.
Juventus – Raced fiercely in the middle stages when being restrained by its rider, J McDonald, to obtain cover behind Star Crossed.
Star Crossed – Raced fiercely in the early and middle stages and also had a tendency to hang out.
Herzegovina – Slow to begin.
Showminder – Shifted in and made contact with the rail near the 600m.
Tenorino – Shifted in behind runners in the early stages from its wide barrier. Passing the 400m had to be steadied when tightened for room between Juventus and Showminder which shifted out to improve. J Collet, rider of Showminder, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Riviera – Stewards permitted B Avdulla to ride the mare 0.5kg over its declared weight of 53.5kg.
RACE 6: Everest Carnival Handicap 1600m:
Devil’s Lair – Slow to begin.
Equipped – Slow to begin (2L). Was then shifted in behind runners in the early
The Cartoonist – Hung in in the early stages of the straight when placed under pressure.
Da Power – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. When questioned regarding the poor performance Rider H Bowman stated that the gelding was forced to work four wide in the early stages outside of Song And A Prayer and Knowitall Jack and he believed this had a telling effect on Da Power’s ability to finish the race off.
Seel The Deel - Between the 200m and 100m had difficulty obtaining clear running.
Mrs Madrid – Rider C Reith reported that his mount commenced to finish the race off strongly from the 300m and he was momentarily held up behind the eventual winner, Song And A Prayer. He added that he then shifted his mount wider in an endeavour to obtain clear running between Song And A Prayer and The Cartoonist, but was held up and unable to secure clear running behind The Cartoonist for the remainder of the event. C Reith added that whilst a run had developed to the inside of Song And A Prayer near the 200m he had already committed to the outside of Song And A Prayer and was unable to shift back in to obtain this position.
The Bald Eagle – Hung out when placed under pressure in the straight when tiring. Raced wide and without cover throughout.
Song And A Prayer – Apprentice R Dolan pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a), in that near the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Song And A Prayer resulting in Song And A Prayer having to be checked and loosing its rightful running. App R Dolan’s permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 18 August 2019 and to expire on Wednesday 4 September 2019 on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty stewards were mindful of R Dolan’s poor record in relation to careless riding.
High Low Bet – Near the 250m was hampered when The Cartoonist shifted out under pressure. High Low Bet then continued to hang out when placed under pressure placing its rider at a disadvantage in fully testing High Low Bet.

Ballistica – Bounded on jumping. For a short distance in the middle stages raced fiercely at the heels of Our Revenue.
Dunbrody Power – Slow to begin. Was held up between the 350m and the 150m when a run developed between Spanish Dream and Intrepidacious.
