Verry Elleegant (NZ) and Avilius (GB) at $3.50 and $2.40 respectively head the opening markets for the $500,000, Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) for three-year-old fillies and $1.5m, Group 1 WFA KIA Tancred Stakes (2400m), the features at Rosehill on Saturday.
The Vinery Stud Stakes is Race 6 at 3.50pm on the nine race programme with the Chris Waller trained Verry Elleegant drawing well at barrier five for James McDonald. The Zed filly won the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill on March 16th over Seabrook (NZ) and Aristia.
The latter two have drawn out with Seabrook, Brett Prebble, in barrier 11 and Aristia, Damien Lane, inside at 10. They are at $13.00 and $11.00 respectively with TAB.com.au’s market.
Godolphin’s Medaglia d’Oro filly Pohutukawa comes to the race off her win in the Group 3 Keith Nolan Classic over 1600m at Kembla Grange on March 15th and she is at $5.00 with barrier nine for Kerrin McEvoy.
Mark Newnham has accepted with Nakeeta Jane after her win in the Group 1 Surround Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on March 2nd and then her third to The Autumn Sun and Fundamentalist in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas over 1600m the following week at Randwick. Josh Parr rides with barrier three and the filly is on the third line of the market at $6.00.
The following race at 4.30pm is the Tancred Stakes with a full field of 13 plus three emergencies.
Godolphin’s Avilius not surprisingly dominates the market after his excellent win in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes over 2000m last Saturday with his winning margin 2 1/4L. James McDonald rides with barrier seven.
The Group 2 Sky High Stakes over 2000m on March 16th and the Group 3 Manion Cup over 2400 last Saturday may have an influence on the race.
The Kris Lees trained Red Cardinal (IRE) won the Sky High Stakes with 1 1/4L in hand and the seven-year-old Montjeu gelding has now won two in succession after his earlier win in the listed Parramatta Cup over 1900m on February 23rd. McEvoy rode Avilius last Saturday and moves across to Red Cardinal with barrier 12.
Lees also has Big Duke (IRE) in the field after his second to Midterm (GB) in the Manion Cup, Brenton Avdulla rides with barrier nine. The seven-year-old Raven’s Pass gelding has won twice over the 2400m trip and placed four times from eight starts.
Big Duke is on the second line of the market at $4.00 with Big Duke next at $8.00.
Overall there are 115 acceptances for the meeting which commences at 12.30pm with a field of 12 two-year-old’s in the $160,000, Group 3 The Schweppervesence (1400m).
The Rosehill track is rated a Heavy 8 on Wednesday after 24.5mm of rain for the last seven days. The rail will be out 6m for the entire circuit.
Rosehill’s weather heading into the weekend has partly cloudy days with 26c on Thursday and 29c on Friday. There is a medium (60%) chance of showers on Thursday with 0mm-4mm possible.
Saturday’s forecast is for a partly cloudy day with a medium (50%) chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm with 0mm-5mm and 17c – 25c.
