Trivass on Cheltenham Day Four

Not a bad day at all even if I do say so myself with an odds on winners, a 40/1 place, and a 12/1 winner so a profit made all round and I can assure you that is a rarity for any punter at Cheltenham regardless.

Sad to see an out of sorts Cue Card pulled up and a fading The New One for my “oldies but goldies double”, but Penhill impressed after such a long lay off and what a training feat by Willie Mullins to win a Stayers Hurdle with the seven-year-old after such a long lay-off.

Enough waffle for today, guess who is flagging after three days of battle, and on to the final day at Cheltenham in the hunt for just one more winner maybe……

1.30pm – At the risk of being barred from every stable tour in the future I was not overly impressed with the looks of Apple’s Shakira at the Nicky Henderson yard and at the prices I am happy to have a little on REDICEAN instead. Unbeaten for Alan King he is a machine from what I have seen and although he has to give seven pounds to his female rival (so much for equality eh?), he is the value call in the smallest Triumph Hurdle field I can remember.

2.10pm – And now it just gets silly. Too many runners, poor odds on some, and luck in running needed and despite a long hard look all I can come up with is a little each way on MOON RACER who is a poor price in my opinion but wins this is David Pipe can get him back to anything like his best, though if I had a choice I would totally ignore this particular contest.

2.50pm – Nigel Twiston-Davies deserves a Cheltenham winner this year and is rapidly running out of options. CALETT MAD is more experienced than most and improving all the time and at a big price he has a slim chance of a place in a very competitive renewal that is really too close to call.

3.30pm – This is one of the more open Gold Cups and if Might Bite stays he wins but that has to be a question mark on this ground and if I know that, so do all the opposing jockeys who will make sure his stamina is tested. NATIVE RIVER has been targetted at this race all season with just the one winning run for Colin Tizzard and after the disappointment of Cue Card the stable deserve a change of fortune.

4.10pm – It is rarely easy to find the winner here but at these prices I am happy to weigh in with VOLNAY DE THAIX in first time cheekpieces. He is on a winning run anyway after two point to point victories and at 20/1 or thereabouts has to be worth a little each way dabble.

4.50pm – The David Pipe stable are struggling but we had a big priced placed yesterday and may well get the same again courtesy of the so far unbeaten MR BIG SHOT. Admittedly he hasn’t been seen in over eleven months but this is the race named after the trainer’s father and one he will really want to win, and if he is race fit he may well be a class apart this afternoon.

5.30pm – One final race and then a year off (I wish). I am still a big fan of the Tizzard stable (costly as that is proving), and it does look as if SIZING PLATINUM has been saved for this for some time. He does need a career best to win here but that may be why he is a massive price and although I doubt I sing off with a winner, a big priced place will do me so once again, fingers crossed!
