Rekindling (GB) in Sydney Cup nominations

The Australian Turf Club received 114 nominations on Monday for the $2m, Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 14th including for the winner of the 2017 Group 1 Melbourne Cup, Rekindling (GB), then trained by Joseph O’Brien and now in the Williams stable under their trainer Liam Howley.

The four-year-old High Chaparral entire is one of seven the stable have nominated for the race with principal owner Lloyd Williams well versed in winning the Sydney two-miler, the last with Gallante (IRE) in 2016. The now seven-year-old Montjeu gelding is nominated again, but he will need to show better form than in the spring when three starts were not fruitful.

Last year’s winning trainer Charlie Appleby with Polarisation (GB) has nominated Rare Rhythm (GB) to try to claim the race again. The lightly raced Dubawi gelding was last seen when winning the listed John Smith Cup over 2787m at York last July.

Fellow Godolphin trainer James Cumming has three nominations, Drochaid (GB), Interlocuter (USA) and Tally.

Familiar names in the nominations include Ed Dunlop with Red Verdon (USA), Hughie Morrison with Fun Mac (GER), William Haggas with Dal Harraild (GB) along with new names, Newmarket based Charlie Fellowes with Prince Of Arran (GB) and French trainer Claude Le Lay with Holdthasigreen (FR).

The Japanese have nominated six runners, Clincher (JPN) for Hiroshi Miyamoto; My Style (JPN) for Mitsugu Kon; Prestwick (JPN) for Yoshinori Muto; Ridge Man (JPN) for Yasushi Shono; Satono Chronicle (JPN) for Yasutoshi Ikee and Sole Impact (JPN) for Hirofumi Toda.

Quite who makes the trip to Sydney will be revealed over the coming weeks when a more detailed look will be taken at likely Cup runners. With a field limit of 20 there will certainly be places for runners from Australasian stables as well as international runners who might not gain entry into the international packed field of the Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
