Racing NSW Stewards advised that they have scheduled the resumption of the stewards inquiry in respect to Nash Rawiller’s riding of Black Magnum in Race 8 – Cabra Bowls Handicap at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 10 August 2019, to be conducted at the Canterbury racecourse at 12:30pm on Wednesday 21 August 2019.
The stewards' report from the meeting stated that an inquiry into the handling and performance of Black Magnum was opened whereby stewards took evidence from Rawiller and trainer Mark Newnham.
Rawiller confirmed his instructions were to go forward and had anticipated taking up a position outside Prime Candidate which he had racing forward. He said that in the early stages he was unable to take up a forward position and elected not to continue to ride forward as he did not feel he had sufficient speed to cross Prime Candidate.
He added as a result Deity was able to cross Black Magnum and when Prime Candidate remained one off he was forced to race three wide and without cover for the majority of the event. He added from the 500 metres his mount was under pressure and weakened noticeably in the straight.
Newnham confirmed the instructions and advised that Black Magnum had continued to please the stable this preparation. It had been expected to perform consistent with the market expectation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
