Perth decisions pending for Winterbottom entries

Hawkesbury-trained mare Spright will get a few days in the paddock before a decision is made on sending her to Perth for the $1 million Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot on December 1.

Spright returns to Hawkesbury today after another first-class Melbourne spring carnival effort at Flemington on Saturday in the $1 milion VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) won by Santa Ana Lane.

Spright finished seventh, running home gamely from the rear to be beaten only 2.75 lengths.

Trainer Garry Frazer was delighted with her effort.

“It was a performance you could not be disappointed with,” Frazer said.

“Damien Oliver said they went that hard early that it was virtually impossible to make up enough ground.”

“Spright finished alongside [n[Redzel[/n] and was still coming on the line.

“She appears to have pulled up well and will have a few days in the paddock once she gets home.

“Then we will make a definite decision whether she goes back to Melbourne next weekend to be flown to Perth for the summer carnival.”

Oliver was suspended at Flemington on Saturday after riding Prized Icon in the Mackinnon Stakes but will be available for the Winterbottom Stakes.

Canberra trainer Matthew Dale is also weighing up a Winterbottom Stakes trip for his crack sprinter Fell Swoop after his excellent first-up effort at Flemington on Oaks Day.

Dale was thrilled with Fell Swoop's return to racing in the Absolut Stakes (1000m) where he finished a close up fifth after an inside gate negated his winning chances.

Dale believes Fell Swoop would have finished first or second if he had been able to come down the favoured outside rail.

Fell Swoop is nominated for the Winterbottom Stakes with Dale giving the sprinter a few days to get over his first-up run before making further plans.

"He holds a nomination for the Winterbottom but I've got to weigh a few things up before we decide,” Dale said.

Dale said there several summer options for Fell Swoop that will allow him to space his runs between Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane if he decides against the Perth trip.
