In a shock note from the Waller stable on Monday morning it was reported that winner Tom Melbourne (IRE) has not received a call up for one of the remaining The Everest slots after eight-year-old blitzed an Open 1030m trial at Rosehill on earlier in the morning.
The crowd favourite showed grit and determination under Hugh Bowman, fresh off riding the world champion Winx on Saturday at Randwick to her 19th Group 1 win, to lead a field home for the first time since his blistering 3 1/L win in the 2016 listed Albany Cup over 2000m to give him that winning feeling again.
On Monday Tom Melbourne destroyed the eight horse field in the trial with a 1 1/2L margin and perhaps the stable waited anxiously by the phones for an invitation for the $13 million race at Randwick on October 13th. They might well have being mulling over their decision to invite the Darren Weir trained Brave Smash (JPN) for the stable's own slot.
However, the stable advised that Tom Melbourne himself conceded late morning that no slot holders had been in contact. In a further blow Tom Melbourne does not appear in TAB.com.au's market for The Everest.
Since the Albany win Tom Melbourne has finished second no less than ten times, however he has soothed his owners with earnings of $1.1 million overall.
No Everest slot holders have been in contact just yet following this mornings trial and for those of you who missed it - please see results below. I have even attached a replay of the last 400m.
