KEMBLA GRANGE – Thursday 26 July 2018
Shakhan– Stewards today continued their inquiry into the death of Shakhan after it collapsed in the tie-up stalls following the running of race 5 at the Kembla Grange Racecourse on 26 July 2018. Evidence today was taken from trainer Mr J Sharah who provided veterinary and treatment records for the relevant period for Shakhan and Racing NSW Official Veterinarian Dr Toby Koenig. A necropsy report conducted by the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden concluded that Shakhan suffered exercise-associated sudden death. As the Stewards were satisfied that there was no pre-existing condition that may have led or contributed to Shakhan suffering exercise-associated sudden death, the inquiry was concluded.
RACE 1: Ascot VIP Maiden Plate 900m
Oyster Bay – began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have bled from both nostrils for the first time. Stable representative Ms L Wharekura was advised the mare would now incur the mandatory three month ban from racing under AR53A and must also barrier trial or gallop 1000m before the Stewards prior to racing again.
Handspun – after being slow to begin was hampered when bumped by Captain Courageous, which shifted out on jumping.
Buckin’ Beauty – hung out rounding the home turn.
RACE 2: Quickvisas.com – Racing Visa Specialists Class 2 Handicap 900m
Starlight Sun – began awkwardly and lost ground (2L).
Stanzza – slow to begin.
Calamity Mo – blundered on jumping.
Justus – laid in under pressure in the straight.
Sweetest Eyes – passing the 150m was disappointed for a run between Ghibli and Il Bandito, which shifted in slightly under pressure. Sweetest Eyes then shifted to the inside of the heels of Il Bandito to continue into clear running.
La Renarde – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
RACE 3: Bidfood Class 1 & Maiden Plate 1850m
Kadoma Man – after being slow to begin, from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages. When questioned regarding the performance, rider R Prest stated with the fast tempo her mount never travelled comfortably at any stage of the event and she could offer no excuse for its performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. The post-race condition of the gelding will be followed up with trainer Mr M Smith in the days subsequent.
Ophaeo Rose – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Raced wide and without cover until the 1200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Orokonui – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight until passing the 350m when shifted to the outside of Shierro.
On Angels Wings – raced keenly in the early stages.
High Flight – laid in in the early part of the straight and then approaching the 350m shifted out abruptly when struck with the whip on the offside, obliging its rider T Wolfgram to change the whip over to his left hand passing the 300m, where High Flight then commenced to lay in and shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.
Caribbean Gold – rider Y Ichikawa reported that in his view the gelding raced flat and failed to handle the eight day backup after racing at Canberra on 7 September 2018. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Sara’s Kingdom – on jumping was hampered when crowded between Communicating and Lady Kaikilani, both of which shifted ground.
Candy Girl – raced keenly in the middle stages. Following the running of this event rider A Taylor became ill and after being treated by the Club’s doctor was transported to hospital for further assessment.
Lucky Helmet – leaving the 1200m was bumped by Cappamore when that runner was attempting to shift Lucky Helmet towards the fence.
Cappamore – raced keenly in the early and middle stages, resulting in Cappamore racing wide and without cover until passing the 700m.
Lavish – raced wide and without cover until the 900m.
Tepario – laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
First Pirouette – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
RACE 5: Outix Australia CG&E Maiden Handicap 1400m
Castel Sant’Angelo – Stewards permitted R Hutchings to ride the gelding 0.5 kilogram over its allotted weight. After being slow to begin was hampered by One Of A Kind, which was carried out by Eskimo Commander, which began awkwardly and shifted out.
Define Tyranny – as T Block was indisposed due to injury, Stewards permitted T Wolfgram to be substituted as the rider of the gelding. Reared on jumping and lost ground. Raced greenly throughout the event and made the home turn awkwardly.
Shouson – as K Jennings was being treated for dehydration following the running of race 3, Stewards permitted A Gibbons to be substituted as the rider of the gelding. Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight and did not obtain clear running until passing the 350m.
Classicman – bumped on jumping with Given Time.
Given Time – bumped on jumping with Classicman.
Saint Barts – slow to begin.
Into The Oblivion – approaching the 250m had to be steadied and shifted in to avoid the heels of Castel Sant’Angelo (R Hutchings), which shifted out slightly. Into The Oblivion was then crowded when hampered between that runner and Shouson when Castel Sant’Angelo shifted back in slightly and Shouson shifted out slightly. R Hutchings was advised to exercise more care.
California Concord – on straightening commenced to lay in, obliging its rider A Layt to switch the whip over into his right hand passing the 150m.
One Of A Kind – raced wide and without cover throughout the event.
RACE 6: Junction Hotel Newcastle Nobbys – Benchmark 70 Handicap 1400m
Mollyfied – after being slow to begin, from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Paris Sizzler – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Commenced to hang out from the 300m and proved difficult to ride out. Was unable to be fully tested over the concluding stages when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Jexerlent.
Profiler – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
Lucky Legend – passing the 350m, when commencing to give ground, was hampered when tightened between Mollyfied and Paris Sizzler, which shifted out and away from Surjin. In this incident Mollyfied shifted in slightly.
Surjin – passing the 150m rider C Lever accidentally dropped his whip and in doing so also momentarily lost the use of his offside rein.
Jexerlent – raced wide and without cover throughout the event.
RACE 7: Amalgamated Cash Services Hurricane Handicap 900m
Nick On The Run – as jockey T Wolfgram was found to have injured his shoulder during the running of race 6 and was subsequently stood down by the Club’s doctor, Stewards permitted J Taylor to be substituted as the rider of the gelding.
Lightz – slow to begin.
Guard Of Honour – slow to begin.
Esgrimidor – began awkwardly.
Azzie’s Ready – began awkwardly.
Aimalac Millie – rider J Penza (Eminent Duke) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that passing the 150m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of Petrossian, which was carried out across the line of Aimalac Millie, which had to be eased and lost its rightful running. J Penza’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 17 September 2018 and to expire on Friday, 21 September 2018, on which day he may ride.
RACE 8: Westfield Kotara Class 1 Handicap 1200m
Tikkitala – as A Bullock was overweight, Stewards permitted B Looker to be substituted as the rider of the gelding. A Bullock was fined the sum of $200 under AR120(b). Slow to begin.
November Man – slow to begin.
Whiteley – slow to begin.
Sun And Heir – after being slow to begin was then hampered when crowded by Cuban Sizzle, which began awkwardly and shifted out. Sun And Heir was then steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
Broom Broom – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
Golly I’m Lucky – approaching the 350m was disappointed for a run between Bill ‘N’ Ted and Tennessee Tango, which shifted out. Golly I’m Lucky was then held up for running until approaching the 200m when it was shifted to the inside of Queen Ablaze to continue into clear running.
Queen Ablaze – passing the 200m the mare, which was inclined to hang in, was steadied away from the heels of Tikkitala when that runner shifted out despite the efforts of its rider.
Warrumbungle – inclined to hang in under pressure over the concluding stages.
Bill ‘N’ Ted – Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. Approaching the 200m raced in restricted room between Tennessee Tango and Signore Fox, which shifted in slightly.
Summary of whip use:
Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii). Bearing in mind the totality of whip use, no action was taken.
