Hush Writer (JPN) pencils in favouritism for Winter Cup

The market has followed the Waterhouse and Bott trained Hush Writer (JPN) from $2.70 into $2.30, as at Thursday afternoon, for the $150,000, listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday and the appears little to work against the sentiment.

The four-year-old Rulership gelding had a rushed introduction campaign into Australia last spring with an attempt to find a place in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. There were two placings, including one in listed company, but after a ninth in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings over 2500m at Flemington in October the stable sent Hush Writer to spell and adjust to the southern hemisphere.

That he seems to have accomplished well judging by his first up win in the listed WJ McKell Stakes over 2400m at Rosehill on June 1st. Prepared with three trials over unsuitable shorter distances Hush Writer was fit and ready for the McKell aided by a good ride by James Innes Jnr.

Innes settled Hush Writer, with 53kg, in third stalking the leaders and then he threw down the gauntlet to the rest going forward and leading at the 400m.

Hush Writer’s quality was on display as he repelled the challenges of High Bridge (GB) with 53kg and Girl Tuesday with 53.5kg for the length of the straight.  The margin was only a short neck, but Hush Writer never looked like losing.

The track was a Good 4 that day and with Hush Writer only ever racing on Good rated tracks he should get a similar surface on Saturday. Rosehill was rated a Soft 5 on Thursday and fine weather is forecast into Saturday.

Hush Writer carries 55.5kg under Tim Clark on Saturday, with barrier seven, with the increased impost surely well within his capabilities to repeat the first win.

High Bridge is back for another challenge with 53.5kg under apprentice Blaike McDougall and barrier 10. Punters have allowed the Chris Waller trained eight-year-old Monsun gelding to drift from $3.40 out to $3.80 as the second favourite. With Yogi (NZ) next at $6.00, after drifting from $5.50, the market has made its mind up.

Hush Writer could start at even shorter odds so Thursday’s pricing might be the value.

The Winter Cup is Race 6 at 2.25pm.

The Best of the Day metropolitan selection for Saturday will be available either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
