Race:1 (603) DAEJEON HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1200 m

MONEY WINNER was withdrawn on 23.4.19 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (restricted action both front legs) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter GREAT SON (Apprentice C Wong). Before being allowed to race again, MONEY WINNER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
WINNING CIRCLE began only fairly and then when being ridden along shortly after the start was crowded for room between SUNNY MAJOR and M REBORN which was taken in by GREAT SON.
OUR HONOUR shifted out at the start, resulting in SUNNY ORIENT being crowded for room inside HAPPY SOUND which became unbalanced after being bumped by SHOW MISSION which shifted in. After bumping with HAPPY SOUND, SHOW MISSION became badly unbalanced and consequently lost ground. After this, despite being ridden along, HAPPY SOUND was slow to muster speed.
From the outside barrier, ROOKIE STAR was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After initially being shifted across behind runners to obtain cover from a wide barrier in the early stages, PERFECT CHOICE was left racing wide after the 1000 Metres and then without cover from passing the 700 Metres.
SUNNY ORIENT got its head up when making the turn near the 1050 Metres awkwardly.
Passing the 1050 Metres, M REBORN was awkwardly placed outside the heels of WINNING CIRCLE which got its head on the side and shifted out when racing close to the heels of OUR HONOUR.
Approaching the 800 Metres, SUNNY MAJOR momentarily raced in restricted room between TRAVEL SUCCESSOR and GREAT SON which shifted in before being directed back out to relieve the tightening.
Also approaching the 800 Metres, WINNING CIRCLE commenced to travel keenly and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of OUR HONOUR.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres,, PERFECT CHOICE lay in towards the heels of SUNNY MAJOR which shifted out marginally.
Approaching the 200 Metres, SHOW MISSION was awkwardly placed behind HAPPY SOUND and then was shifted to the outside of that horse passing the 200 Metres.
Passing the 200 Metres, M REBORN was shifted out from behind SUNNY MAJOR to continue improving.
When questioned regarding his riding of ROOKIE STAR in the Straight, R Bayliss stated that passing the 300 Metres he directed his mount to the inside of SHOW MISSION and was able to obtain clear running. He said near the 150 Metres he committed ROOKIE STAR to the outside of LIGHTNING MISSILE as he had observed that earlier in the Straight LIGHTNING MISSILE had shifted in. He said as he committed ROOKIE STAR to the outside of LIGHTNING MISSILE, he had to wait a number of strides to ensure that there was sufficient room between LIGHTNING MISSILE and HAPPY SOUND as he was concerned that movement from either horse would result in ROOKIE STAR being crowded for room. He said when he was satisfied that neither LIGHTNING MISSILE nor HAPPY SOUND was going to shift ground, he immediately rode his mount hard to improve between those horses and ROOKIE STAR then finished off the race well. He said after viewing the video footage, he felt in retrospect that he should have shifted to the inside of LIGHTNING MISSILE as there was available running to the inside of that horse, however, during the race he felt that the best likelihood of clear running would be to the outside of LIGHTNING MISSILE. R Bayliss was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, he was to ensure that he avails himself of the opportunity to improve his positions where circumstances permit and also to ensure that after committing to a run he then makes every endeavour to ensure that his mounts improve into those runs at the earliest opportunity.
A veterinary inspection of SHOW MISSION, WINNING CIRCLE and LIGHTNING MISSILE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SUNNY ORIENT, GREAT SON and TRAVEL SUCCESSOR were sent for sampling.

Race:2 (604) DAEGU HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1650 m

FINE WITH ME was withdrawn on 22.4.19 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MISTER MONTE. As previously advised, FINE WITH ME will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
PERFECT TO PLAY, which was fractious in the barriers, lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and then lost ground when crowded for room between VICTORIOUS LEADER and YOU HAVE MY WORD which was taken out by WICKER which in turn was taken out by ABOVE. After this, PERFECT TO PLAY and VICTORIOUS LEADER were steadied and shifted across behind runners.
Also from a wide barrier, GOLDEN KID was steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
After the 1300 Metres, MY FAMILY got its head up when travelling keenly.
Approaching the 1200 Metres, PERFECT TO PLAY was steadied away from the heels of ABOVE.
Approaching and passing the 1200 Metres, WICKER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ELECTRIC LIGHTNING.
Passing the 1100 Metres, VICTORIOUS LEADER got its head up when being checked away from the heels of WICKER.
Passing the 900 Metres, VICTORIOUS LEADER again got its head up when being checked away from the heels of WICKER which travelled keenly and was awkwardly placed behind ELECTRIC LIGHTNING.
Near the 850 Metres, YOU HAVE MY WORD, which was travelling wide and without cover, was taken wider by ELECTRIC LIGHTNING which shifted out to improve. After this, YOU HAVE MY WORD continued to travel wide and without cover.
PERFECT TO PLAY was held up for clear running passing the 400 Metres and then shifted out and bumped WICKER shortly after straightening.
Passing the 300 Metres, YOU HAVE MY WORD raced tight outside MEDIC DRAGON which shifted out to improve to the outside of MISTER MONTE.

Race:3 (605) GWANGJU HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1800 m

AMAZING GOLD began awkwardly.
ROMANTIC JOURNEY began very awkwardly and shortly after the start became unbalanced after shifting in and bumping YOUNG GLORY. After this, despite being ridden along, ROMANTIC JOURNEY failed to muster speed and was shifted across behind runners.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, DRAGON WARRIOR, which was travelling keenly, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of COME ON WONGCHOY (Apprentice C Wong) which shifted in when not properly clear. Apprentice Wong was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Near the 1200 Metres, WHAMPOA STAR was left racing wide and without cover.
Near the 550 Metres, GOBI STORM got its head up when being checked away from the heels of COME ON WONGCHOY which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DRAGON WARRIOR after attempting to shift out and improve between that horse and MEGATRON where there was insufficient room. MI BLANCO, which was following GOBI STORM, was awkwardly placed behind that horse passing the 500 Metres.
Passing the 500 Metres, WEALTHY FORTUNE raced tight outside ENJOYABLE SUCCESS which shifted to the outside of MI BLANCO.
Passing the 300 Metres, YOUNG GLORY was directed to the inside of MI BLANCO. YOUNG GLORY was then held up for clear running behind COME ON WONGCHOY approaching the 200 Metres. YOUNG GLORY raced in restricted room inside MI BLANCO (N Callan) near the 150 Metres as that horse was shifted to the inside of the heels of DRAGON WARRIOR. YOUNG GLORY was then unable to obtain clear running for the remainder of the race and consequently was not tested. N Callan was advised to exercise more care in respect of his initial movement to the inside of DRAGON WARRIOR which resulted in YOUNG GLORY being crowded for room.
Close to the finishing line, MI BLANCO was awkwardly placed inside the heels of DRAGON WARRIOR and consequently was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.
Also close to the finishing line, MEGATRON was awkwardly placed behind GOLDEN CANNON and consequently was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.
When questioned, C Schofield (DRAGON WARRIOR) stated that passing the winning post on the first occasion DRAGON WARRIOR commenced to prove very difficult to settle despite the fact that the race was being run at a good tempo. He said after being awkwardly placed close to the heels of COME ON WONGCHOY approaching the first turn, he steadied his mount so as to allow MEGATRON to cross DRAGON WARRIOR and provide his mount with cover. He said however DRAGON WARRIOR continued to prove very difficult to settle and for some distance after the 1200 Metres was very awkwardly placed close to the heels of MEGATRON. He said as DRAGON WARRIOR was not relaxing, he shifted his mount to the outside of MEGATRON making the turn near the 1050 Metres and allowed his mount to improve forward of that horse. He said he did not have to ride his mount along to do so as DRAGON WARRIOR improved its position easily around MEGATRON. He added after improving forward of MEGATRON, DRAGON WARRIOR relaxed a little better and he had intended to remain racing to the outside of COME ON WONGCHOY after that horse initially maintained its position in the lead. He said however that the rider of COME ON WONGCHOY did not persist in holding the lead and therefore he allowed DRAGON WARRIOR to improve its position of its own accord forward of COME ON WONGCHOY to obtain the outright lead approaching the 600 Metres. He added, in his opinion, DRAGON WARRIOR’s failure to finish off the race over the concluding stages could be attributed to the manner in which it over-raced in the early and middle stages.
A veterinary inspection of COME ON WONGCHOY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to be scoped due to being fractious.
A veterinary inspection of WEALTHY FORTUNE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
ENJOYABLE SUCCESS and GOLDEN CANNON were sent for sampling.

Race:4 (606) INCHEON HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 4 1200 m

ALL BEST FRIENDS shifted in at the start and bumped TAKINGUFURTHER.
WONDERFUL JOURNEY began awkwardly and subsequently travelled wide and without cover throughout the race.
Shortly after the start, FORTUNE BUDDY lost ground when being checked away from the heels of JUMBO PRIZE which was taken in by SUPER RED DRAGON which in turn was taken in by NEW DYNAMIC. After this, FORTUNE BUDDY raced detached from the field and finished tailed out. The performance of FORTUNE BUDDY was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, FORTUNE BUDDY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of FORTUNE BUDDY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
Also shortly after the start, PLAY WISE was steadied away from the heels of ALL BEST FRIENDS which was taken out by TAKINGUFURTHER.
BRILLIANT was shifted across behind runners in the early stages from the outside barrier.
Passing the 1100 Metres, PLAY WISE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SUPER RED DRAGON.
SUPER MODEL travelled keenly outside the lead after the 900 Metres.
Near the 650 Metres, ALL BEST FRIENDS was awkwardly placed close to the heels of NEW DYNAMIC which raced close to the heels of LE TERROIR.
When questioned regarding his riding of SUPER RED DRAGON, M Harley stated that he was instructed to ensure that the horse relaxed as SUPER RED DRAGON had previously been difficult to manage. He said he was also asked to ensure that SUPER RED DRAGON was able to make the turns as best as possible as when travelling keenly in its track work and barrier trials, the horse had made the turns awkwardly due to over-racing. He said in accordance with his instructions, after being bumped by NEW DYNAMIC on jumping, he steadied his mount to obtain a trailing position as he did not want SUPER RED DRAGON racing keenly given the relatively short run to the first turn. He said he was particularly mindful to have SUPER RED DRAGON relaxed making the first turn and therefore he elected not to remain racing behind NEW DYNAMIC as he believed that he would have had to allow the horse more rein to maintain its position at the back of that horse which may have resulted in it not being able to make the turn properly. He said because of this ALL BEST FRIENDS was able to improve its position forward of SUPER RED DRAGON and shift in to be racing ahead of his mount and behind NEW DYNAMIC after the 900 Metres. He said when racing between WONDERFUL JOURNEY and PLAY WISE near the 700 Metres, SUPER RED DRAGON was taken back through the field as a result of being awkwardly placed behind ALL BEST FRIENDS at the same stage that both WONDERFUL JOURNEY and PLAY WISE were able to improve their position. He said this resulted in SUPER RED DRAGON being required to race towards the rear of the field. He added at the entrance to the Straight he immediately shifted SUPER RED DRAGON to the outside of PLAY WISE and commenced to ride his mount along and SUPER RED DRAGON commenced to finish off the race satisfactorily. He said when PLAY WISE shifted out after the 200 Metres, he directed his mount to the outside of DREAM WARRIORS to ensure that SUPER RED DRAGON’s momentum was not impeded. He said after doing this SUPER RED DRAGON finished off the race well until close to the finishing line at which time he was awkwardly placed inside the heels of WONDERFUL JOURNEY. Mr W Y So, the trainer of SUPER RED DRAGON advised that he had instructed Jockey Harley to obtain a midfield position if possible from the horse’s inside barrier but stressed to Jockey Harley the need to ensure the horse was relaxed. He said in a lot of its track work and in its trials the horse had proved difficult to settle and he believed that the horse would not finish off the race if it again was not able to relax during the race. He said he was surprised that SUPER RED DRAGON got as far back in the race as it did, however, he accepted that this was as a result of Jockey Harley riding SUPER RED DRAGON to ensure that it was able to relax. M Harley was advised that the Stewards accepted his reason for allowing NEW DYNAMIC to cross SUPER RED DRAGON near the 1100 Metres given his instructions, however, he was advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, he should have then attempted to remain racing behind that horse rather than allowing ALL BEST FRIENDS to shift in front of SUPER RED DRAGON which resulted in the horse having to race further back in the field than intended. He was further told to ensure that he rides his mounts in such a manner that they are able to race in the most advantageous position given the instructions and the circumstances of the race.
A veterinary inspection of PLAY WISE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
LE TERROIR and JUMBO PRIZE were sent for sampling.

Passing the 1000 Metres, LIGHTNING STEED got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of LORIZ.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, GIFT OF LIFELINE and HERO TIME raced tight. Then near the 500 Metres, GIFT OF LIFELINE shifted in and bumped GLITTERING ARMOUR which resulted in GIFT OF LIFELINE becoming unbalanced and then shifting out towards the heels of HERO TIME.
After the 250 Metres, GLITTERING ARMOUR was shifted out a number of horses to obtain clear running.

A veterinary inspection of FLYING MONKEY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.

A veterinary inspection of RED DESERT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
PLANET STAR and FAT TURTLE were sent for sampling.

Throughout the race, PACKING WARRIOR travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of TRAVEL FIRST, Mr C H Yip, the trainer of TRAVEL FIRST, stated that whilst the horse had not been beaten by big margins in its recent races on the turf, nonetheless it had raced disappointingly. He said he was of the opinion that TRAVEL FIRST was suited when ridden in a forward position as the track appeared to be favouring horses on the speed in a number of races conducted tonight. He said when able to race in a forward position, TRAVEL FIRST relaxed better which resulted in the horse being able to finish off its race. He said he had not altered the track work of TRAVEL FIRST in the lead up to tonight’s race with the horse travelling up to Conghua Racecourse in between races which was consistent with the manner in which he had prepared the horse for all of its recent races. He added whilst he felt that TRAVEL FIRST carrying a light weight would be to its advantage, nonetheless he did not anticipate that the horse would be able to perform as well as it did.
HAPPY DRAGON, TRAVEL FIRST and GLORIOUS DRAGON were sent for sampling.

Race:8 (610) SEOUL HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1000 m

MEGA HEART was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After travelling a short distance, BEAR AGAIN was crowded for room between MAGIC LEGEND and HONG KONG BET which was taken out by GOLDEN DASH. After this, both HONG KONG BET and BEAR AGAIN were shifted across behind runners from wide barriers.

Approaching the 100 Metres, HONG KONG BET shifted out abruptly away from the heels of DREAM COME TRUE which was giving ground.
After the race, Apprentice C Wong stated that after riding his mount along in the early stages to obtain a forward position, FRUSTRATED did not show sufficient speed to cross YEE CHEONG BABY to its inside and was then left racing wide and without cover. He said making the turn after the 600 Metres FRUSTRATED lay out and then came under pressure in the early part of the Straight. He said FRUSTRATED initially responded satisfactorily, however, commenced to lay in approaching the 100 Metres as it tired. He added over the concluding stages FRUSTRATED did not finish off the race which he attributed to the fact that the horse had been required to travel wide and without cover throughout the race. A veterinary inspection of FRUSTRATED immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of DREAM COME TRUE immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg and have shifted its left front plate. Before being allowed to race again, DREAM COME TRUE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

General

1. 17 April 2019 Happy Valley Racemeeting – Race 7 (591)

The Stewards tonight interviewed Mr A S Cruz, the trainer of CIRCUIT GLORY, regarding the instructions he provided to K Teetan in this race. Mr Cruz confirmed that he had instructed Jockey Teetan to ride the horse positively and lead given that it had previously been successful when ridden in this manner. He said he studied the field and believed the CIRCUIT GLORY would have more speed than other runners in the race and felt that the horse would be able to obtain the lead without having to be hard ridden to do so. He said as DIVINE UNICORN was having its first race start in Hong Kong, he was unaware of that horse’s racing pattern and was of the opinion that DIVINE UNICORN contesting for the lead had required Jockey Teetan to make more use of CIRCUIT GLORY in the early and middle stages to obtain the lead which resulted in the race being run at a tempo faster than anticipated. He added however he was satisfied that K Teetan had ridden CIRCUIT GLORY in accordance with his instructions.
